Owncast is a free and open source live video and chat server for your events. Stream your entertainment, education, tv station, performances, games, communities, conferences, or whatever you have to share with an audience without big tech.

Note: Microblogging services aren't a great place to provide support. Please file support requests at our issue tracker so they don't get overlooked! https://github.com/owncast/owncast/issues

@themadcodger @SamXavia There's a magazine created for Owncast as well, but it's not very active :) https://fedia.io/m/owncast

@owncast I've got a question. Is it possible to include a link on the Owncast server page back to a Mastodon profile for the purposes of link verification? I can't seem to make that work by dropping a plain link using an anchor tag in the page admin settings.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@jay I wonder if Mastodon doesn't support client-side rendered content.

Hello @owncast

I have some question about Owncast vs Fediverse

  1. Is it possible to federate between Peertube and Owncast? In other words,can i open an owncast stream on Peertube?

  2. I'm working on the Peertube chat plugin. I made a Fediverse Enhancement Proposals (https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/1970/fep-1970.md) so that third party softwares can open chats associated to live streams. See here: https://livingston.frama.io/peertube-plugin-livechat/technical/thirdparty/

Are you insterested to implement this in owncast?
Have you any comment on the FEP?

Thanks!

@John_Livingston When I did research into it before I was unable to get PeerTube follow an Owncast account. It seems like PeerTube federates on a server level, not an account level. So one PeerTube server needs to follow another PeerTube server? Not an account on PeerTube could follow another account elsewhere? If I remember correctly, anyway. I'd love for that to improve, but I was pretty stuck. Without that being resolved the chat discussion is pretty moot.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@John_Livingston Maybe we can discuss some paths forward to make this happen? I'd love that.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@John_Livingston @Chocobozzz Unfortunately not. There was a start of it at https://fedidevs.org/projects/owncast/, but didn't get very far. I know this isn't helpful. Feel free to ping me directly @gabek if you run into any problems or questions.

For detail, this is how far I got before. While I said I couldn't follow, that isn't technically true. It could send a follow request, and Owncast accepts it, but PeerTube doesn't see it as valid. You can see an example follow at https://nightly.owncast.tv/.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@John_Livingston Yup, exactly! I'd be happy to set you up an instance for testing as well if that would be helpful. @Chocobozzz @gabek

Are you familiar with @radiofreefedi, the fantastic community radio for the Fediverse? All the awesome music and audio content created by those across the Fediverse is now simulcasted in video as another way to enjoy it.

Little known fact: Before Owncast had a web-based admin, a terminal-based dashboard was built, but never shipped.

I see @owncast 0.1.1 is still being tested but does anyone have ideas when it will release? Wanted to sit on this project until it was ready.

@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@rhsjjack Should be soon, but it's just some small tweaks and bug fixes. No reason to wait for it!

Hey Question for the more technical side of the fediverse. I've been looking into OwnCast and I'm wondering what would most people recommend specs wise for a small viewer count of lets say under 10 at a time?

I keep seeing mentions of digital ocean's droplet for $5ish a month but surely that's low spec on the side of live streaming right? I do want to at least send out 3000 Kbps, so I know that's a factor.

Owncast is what it is because of all the amazing contributors from all over the world. I'm immensely thankful to each one of them.

Take a moment to see all the contributions from all the fantastic developers since the first day of the project.

@errhead & @agates - I know you both do things with @peertube … what do you think about @owncast? I frequently see listed as a YouTube alternative and as a Twitch alternative. The latter is frequently mentioned as the best live streaming option that’s hooked into the but I see you all using PeerTube for this instead… thus my curiosity.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@genebean @agates @peertube @errhead I'm afraid I'm lacking context here. What's the question?

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@agates @genebean @errhead Podcasts are RSS feeds with downloadable enclosures. What would the enclosure point to with Owncast?

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@genebean @agates @errhead I'm not understanding how ephemeral live streams and Podcasting can work together. What if it's a 24/7 stream, how do you download something that never ends? Or the opposite, what happens when the stream ends and is no longer is live and a Podcast client tries to access it? Obviously you've thought through this more than I have, so please do file an issue with our issue tracker with detailed examples, and we can discuss it there.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@genebean @agates @errhead I'd still encourage you to file a feature request so it has a dedicated place to be discussed, planned, and fleshed out if this is something you're serious about requesting to get built. If it's not filed there's a 0% it'll even be thought about.

Hey @owncast , ever since starting our instance @kappaesse we faced a weird problem: when people watch our broadcast through mobile network, the stream buffers all the time. All is fine with wifi or eth. We tried increasing/decreasing the bitrate, error tolerance, CPU usage, resolution, fps... everything.
Any tips?
@ed

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@KSGamingLife @kappaesse @ed I'd recommend first finding exactly what the issue is. Hopefully the stream health page in the admin can point you to what exactly it is. See how low of a quality is needed for this particular mobile network. It's impossible for me to know, unfortunately, though. There are so many variables. Feel free to drop by the Owncast support channels for more in depth conversation if you're not sure what to do next.

Love all the customization people are making to their Owncast servers with the release of the new version. Owncast streamers are a creative bunch!

@owncast I am trying to verify my owncast site with my mastodon account (to get the green box around it). I put the link code in the header of the "index.html" but it hasn't verified. Is there somewhere else I should be putting it?

Thank you.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@hamishtpb I would think you'd just want to add your Fediverse handle as a link here: https://owncast.online/docs/website/#external-social-links

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@hamishtpb If there's anything that needs to be changed with those links to support what you're doing please let me know!

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@hamishtpb I'm pretty sure it just requires rel me auth, and that attribute is a part of those links.

owncast,
@owncast@fosstodon.org avatar

@hamishtpb The links are actually located elsewhere on the page:

If you've ever wanted to contribute to an open source project, but thought "I'm not technical" or "I don't program" but have experience with design Owncast would love to have you involved!

We're planning for future features and would love to have a designer involved early.

People say "Owncast needs polish", so maybe you can help make a real difference!

@bloodaxe Hopefully one day! Localization is a big project, but we're in a better place than we were a year ago to make that happen. Somebody just needs to focus on it and there's too many other things going on at the moment. https://github.com/owncast/owncast/issues/1604
