I want to find more people using , but it seems like it's just as hard (if not harder) as finding new channels! :blobcatsadlife: is a difficult part of the and platforms in-general.

@bloodaxe It does seem like the majority of people who use Owncast keep their instances private. So while I believe the number of people who use Owncast for a variety of live streaming needs is increasing, the number of people doing "Twitch-style" streaming are fewer.

🎉 Congrats to @gabek and @owncast for launching version version 0.10 this week!

It's a major release with a COMPLETE front-end rewrite 😲, and has been much anticipated by Owncast's fediversal streaming community.

🧪 I'll be testing it with a livestream in about an hour (5/1 at 8pm eastern) at 🎥 @streaming doing some research on fundraising for open source software projects and vibing to some music.

This response from @owncast is befuddling.

Not once did I say that running Owncast is expensive. The server software itself isn’t costly to run, and doesn’t require much in the way of hardware specs.

I said that video is expensive. Which it typically is, especially compared to text, photos, audio, etc.

Now if @owncast knows of ways to save on the cost of video, I’m sure everyone would like to learn how. Because it’s not just me who’s concerned about the cost of video. It’s a whole lot of people who would be running an Owncast server but haven’t yet.

So tell me how to do it. If I’m streaming all my video games, I’d rather use than .

@atomicpoet I'm feeling like I must have offended you in some way in the past. If that's the case I apologize. I don't know why you have such feelings to go on the offensive.

If you're asking in good faith, it's exactly as expensive as you want it to be for your use case. I don't know what your requirements are or your hosting options are, so I can't tell you what it would cost. It's like asking the price to run Nginx. It depends what you're doing with it.

I'm tempted to start using because I want a federated replacement. What keeps me from doing it is the sheer cost of video.

Because screenshots really don't do justice for a game like Extreme-G 2. It really is awful, and only seeing a video can make you appreciate how herky-jerky is.

On another note, I own 7,000 video games. I'd love to do these games justice by archiving video just so the rest of the world can see them in action. They really do deserve to be remembered.

@atomicpoet Sending out a message to 16k people saying running Owncast is expensive isn't helpful or accurate. I'm not sure why you'd want to spread FUD about the project. It's a piece of infrastructure that lets a lot of people do some really cool things. If it's not for you, that's fine, but I thought we were all on the same team.

@owncast Curious if you plan to have an API and/or application in FDroid? I don't have a Twitch or Kick account or app, but I bet it would be a cool UX as a viewer to be able to have an account, follow streamers (or just bookmark them locally without an account), and pull out your phone to see "who's on".

@ill_logic Building a new Android application would be a huge undertaking. Owncast is a very, very small project. Hopefully all that functionality are things you can already do from the web without a dedicated app.

But if she sees this, I tested the slider she had concerns with in the upcoming release of Owncast and it looks to be functioning as expected. Please do test it when the release comes out and file any bugs that are run into!

@darnell @fediversereport @gabek It doesn't need to be costly or complex. One of Owncast's primary goals is to demystify running your own live streams. The centralized services want you to think they're they only options, and unfortunately most people believe them.

It will be pumped out to my LinkedIn, Youtube, Facebook, and other channels. I use to pump these things out to Periscope too but no more. It would be nice to have a Periscope-like service here. (Ya, I've played with Peertube but I'm looking for live video embeds)

@jimcarroll @fringe There's nothing additional you have to do. As long as the interface you use supports it, it'll show up inline. Seems to be working fine!
