⛈️ Stormy clouds and much needed rains in Granada. The sunny weather is already returning ☀️, and the main reservoir for Granada is just above over 50% of its capacity, and well down on the last 4 years' average for the same period. We still need more rain, or snow on the Sierra 🏔️🙏

@AdamBishop Here in Dallas we hit 94⁰F (34.4⁰ Celsius) yesterday. We've been reading about the drought in Catalonia as well. Sobering news for us all. 🌡️ Enjoy that rain ☔!

5 Best MP3 Players to Buy In 2024
Live like it's 2002.

Bought the kids these InniOasis knockoff iPods. They're Android & have recordable FM radio too. They are infatuated with the click wheel, as they should be.

https://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/g46660660/best-mp3-players/

pabloniusmonk,
@pabloniusmonk@mastodon.social avatar

@AdamBishop Seamlessly, yes, essentially like a flash drive. The Click Wheel trick is nice except it doesn't adjust the speed while you're perusing through your tracks like the iPod did. That tests your patience, no doubt.

Otherwise it's a neat approximation of the iPod classic for them. And they had never used one before.

pabloniusmonk,
@pabloniusmonk@mastodon.social avatar

@AdamBishop Since you mention the few old iPods you have around, I would be remiss not to mention to you the RockBox option: https://www.rockbox.org/

You could even replace the 30-pin connector with USB-C. And RockBox allows for any OS to load the iPod.

Lots of neat mods on old iPods. Nice weekend project - for a rainy day? ;-)

In February 2024, it will approach 70°F (21°C) degrees multiple times in Michigan over the next week.

The average high here in February according to the University of Michigan is 34°F (1°C)

This isn’t normal.

@Sheril Forecast is for 94⁰ here in Dallas tomorrow. I cut the lawn last week in shorts. And it's still February!

The @BBCRD are continuing their Mastodon trial for at least another six months! 👏 Here's hoping it will be many more. 🙏

pabloniusmonk,
@pabloniusmonk@mastodon.social avatar

@AdamBishop Oh well...

"We have been asked by a number of people on Mastodon to include BBC News social accounts in the trial. Because of the potential sensitivity around news stories, we need to be particularly careful with our editorial processes and within the scope of this trial we are not in a position to guarantee time and effort from other teams outside of R&D. This means we haven't been able to include BBC News in the trial yet, but we are working on it."

Good article from one of the founders of The Quietus, an online music site I like. Btw, it frustrates me that The Quietus and other indie music magazines/websites are still using Twitter and haven’t even tested Mastodon (as far as I’m aware). Several of The Quietus writers are on here, but wouldn’t it be great if the publisher itself tried some new things on the web. Ok, it’s still early days… https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/30/pitchfork-q-music-reviews-critics-songs

Mary Weiss, Lead Singer of the Shangri-Las, Dies at 75

“I had enough pain in me at the time to pull off anything and get into it and sound believable,” Weiss later recalled in 2001. “You can hear it on the performances. It was very easy for me. The recording studio was the place where you could really release what you were feeling without everybody looking at you.”

Perhaps Pitchfork matters today because its arc parallels that of the internet itself, from nerdy and amateurish to grown-up, worldly, and inclusive, to now gated off in a Babel of AI-age confusion.

Dallas is decreasing homelessness. Here’s how we did it

"Over 95% of the neighbors we connect with at homeless encampments say yes to housing, dispelling a common myth that most are “service resistant.”

"People living in encampments are given a home, not shuffled to temporary housing, cited for trespassing, or forced to disperse around the city (all more costly and inefficient outcomes)."
