I am really enjoying the variety of languages being employed at this year. It's been pretty English-heavy for a long time, so the re-emergence of other tongues is a delightful change of pace!

Apple navigation interprets Canada’s bilingual “east/est” signage as “east eastern standard time” which is… deft. “Stay in the right lane for highway 401 east eastern standard time” is quite a cognitive swoop to endure when you’re moving at speed.

Some years back, Google decided to "be helpful" and translate Maps into whatever language the e.g. phone is using.

I live in France and speak French. I choose to put my phone in the English. I neither want nor need maps to tell me where the "Triumphal Arch" is.

It cannot be turned off as far as I know. It is the worst.

Great talk about from @lornajane at . Some key takeaways:

  • Treat docs as code.
  • Do linting and fuzzing just like you would with code.
  • Use source control and leverage things like branching for efficient reviewing.
  • Make sure all the tooling is available locally (not just an upstream platform).
    -Privilege local previews for fast feedback loops.

    I still use a little metal mints box I got at @zurich in 2021. I refresh the mints ofc :)

    I also still use a portable battery pack I got as a speaker gift at Cape Town in like 2016. The gift that keeps on giving!

    Oh and a nice fleece from DOD Berlin as well, I want to say 2019?

    Good stuff does exist :)

    So far my favorite mindfuck with French railway signaling: one of the common signals is called a "square". This, of course, is because the signal in question never has a square shape.

    (it used to, in the days of mechanical signals, but in modern times it's an oblong set of traffic lights)

    phrawzty,
    @phrawzty@hachyderm.io avatar

    @danderson
    It's possibly more subtle than that. Carré literally means square, but it can also mean a frame, or a form that encloses other forms.

    As an aside, confusingly, we often say carré when referring to rectangles too. :blobfoxdizzy:

    SNCF's open data hub (https://ressources.data.sncf.com/explore/) is a delight for the rail fan.

    Want a list of all train stations on the network? Sure, here's a dataset about all of them, including lat/lon of individual platforms.

    Or maybe signaling equipment's your jam? Sure, here's a table of every signal and placard on the network.

    I hear you humans like seeing things in 3D, how about a fucking lidar point cloud of our routes.

    phrawzty,
    @phrawzty@hachyderm.io avatar

    @danderson
    France, and more broadly the EU, have strong open data regulations for anything that's state owned, operated, or funded. While any one entity might not have much to offer, entities that themselves function as massive interoperating spreadsheets (e.g. a national rail operator) are—by default—treasure troves of data.

    @paigerduty I had a whole talk about how sysadmins / DevOps engs / SREs could "shift left" on cloud spend back in 2019. It was not popular, haha. I think history has vindicated me, which is fine, but resistance to the concept is still fairly standard afaict. :/

    Dating apps are gross for the most part, but I think you hit the nail on the head with dating itself being the issue. It's an absurd dance with way more failure conditions than paths to success. (And geez those failures can really hurt.)

    Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that you're running into those failure conditions. Taking some time to concentrate on yourself is almost always a good call though! 👍
