No, not "Progressive Enchantment".

It's "Progressive Enhancement."

Hello friends! I'm still testing out my personal ActivityPub server - and I need your help 🙂

If you click this link → @example

Do you see the user's account or a page of JSON code?

If you do see the code, could you please let me know which platform / app you're using?

THANKS GANG!

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@Edent JSON code Max 13.5.2 FF/Chrome/Safari.

@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@Edent It depends on the server? Oh wow, I thought you were doing a browser test.

@seaotta Well, as far as I'm concerned you don't have to wait ... 😉

Time to save Firefox from Mozilla, I guess, before they bring in "trustworthy AI".

Here's a fun obscure question... I'm thinking of making a map of locations of orchestrions

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchestrion

Have you seen one recently? Where was it?

Musée Mécanique in San Francisco has one: http://www.museemechanique.org/5.html

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@simon Here's an entire museum full of them: https://speelklok.adlibhosting.com/ais6/search/simple

The most recent one I saw personally was a small one that occasionally plays on the local market on Saturdays.

There used to be some big ones in town, like the one below, but they pretty much disappeared from Amsterdam.

Well well, the first attempt to form a new Dutch government with radical-right election winner Geert Wilders has failed: centre-right NSC party leader Omtzigt abandoned the negotiations - for now.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

The problem is that Wilders absolutely needs Omtzigt in order to become prime minister.

There are four large parties, and three of them are necessary for a majority: Wilders's PVV, Omtzigt's NSC, conservative-liberal VVD, and left-wing GL/PvdA. The last one will never support Wilders, so PVV/NSC/VVD is the name of the game - until Omtzigt walked out.

Help, voor een interview over heb ik een schrijversportret nodig.

Kan iemand mij een maserati lenen, een bontmantel en twee à drie doberman pinchers?

ppk,

@JonaLendering Een coltrui en een pijp zijn een stuk goedkoper.

It’s strange that the most egregious performance anti-patterns in frontend dev just persist, seemingly unlike other outdated practices. Like, putting JavaScript in the way of content delivery is a fundamentally bad pattern. Maybe the worst common issue. We all know this. But it’s still popularly practiced! It’s weird that we’re still advising the same things about performance from 2012. We managed to flip all of our Ajax to fetch() pretty quickly; why not these practices that impact users more?

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@scottjehl @beep @zachleat ... but if we go back ten or fifteen years when money was paid to originally create these dark patterns ...

... money was NOT paid to the people and sites who were teaching front end dev in a way that could have prevented the dark patterns ...

... and the question is if we're going to repeat that mistake after the current round of doing away with dark patterns is over ....

... because everything online should be free.

Isn't it time to retire THAT notion ... ?

I am, apparently, in the productization group. Until today I did not know that that word existed.

@patrick_h_lauke Yup. Let's productize the shit out of this stuff.

Just written the most complex CSS selector of my life, excuse me while I have a lie-down

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@michelle I raise you dt:has(~ dd:hover):not(dt:has(~ dt ~ dd:hover)) ~ dd:not(dd:hover ~ dt ~ dd)

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@michelle And yes, this one was quite complicated as well, and it took me a while, and I couldn't even use nesting because of a Chrome bug.

But yours is nifty as well.

Developers in the U.S. will not be able to test on or debug Chrome/Firefox iOS that their E.U. users are on. That will sure be fun. Thanks, Apple.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@keithjgrant I was wondering just now how much money I could make by installing all browsers on an iPhone and then shipping it.

... unless they're wiped when they get onto a US network ...

@ppk@front-end.social avatar

It just occurred to me that pretty soon web developers need to test their sites on the new Chrome/Blink/iOS and Firefox/Gecko/iOS and other new iOS browsers

....

BUT THEY CAN'T outside the EU

@Meyerweb Also, too, if I travel to the US with my EU iPhone, what will happen to my browsers?

That, at least, is something I'll be able to test later this year.

it’s sad that no one cares about the time to second byte

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@zachleat You are a middle child. You have no special selector like first-child or last-child. You will have to mess about with nth-child until it works. We feel for you.
