There is a secret third option - people like me that hide their desktop icons

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

@JenMsft all modern OS going for the dock/pinned taskbar method has rendered the desktop icons completely useless to me. I put everything that matters there, search for the rest and never ever look at the desktop anymore.

I am generally not a fan of . It may sound funny since all high-end are luxury, but Rolex is in its own league when it comes to being overpriced. I also donโ€™t like how the brand treats their customers with wait-list and service. And most of their models are too gaudy to my tastes. With that said, there are a few exceptions and one of them is the Speedking 6430, predecessor to old Air-king. Manual wind, no hacking, tiny (31mm), simple with cream dial

A watch I don't wear that much nowadays for geopolitical reasons, but...I do like it. It's cheap and good and has a 10 year service interval due to the innards being apparently primitive as hell. Loses about a minute a day mind you. A Vostok Komandirskie.

    Just throwing a message in a bottle: is there someone here knowledgeable about the history of Constellation and in particular the pie pan from around 1962-63?

    @violinguy I nearly mistook it for a Constellation at first glance. It looks a lot like one.

    Really incredible that someone can be good at running companies full of rocket scientists (SpaceX) or brain surgeons (NeuraLink) but then totally ๐Ÿ’ฉthe ๐Ÿ›๏ธ running a social media site.

    It really makes you wonderโ€ฆ

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @carnage4life it shows that Musk is actually running almost nothing in these companies and that they have a secondary leadership that tries to ignore him when possible unlike Twitter.

    @Pjcoyle @carnage4life from the way he speaks, it seems to me that he understands very little of the science and technology he claims to know about beside some surface level parroting.

    @alrescha @whix100 @arstechnica itโ€™s literally what the right to repair legislation aims to fix in another field. So you are not only weirdly defending problematic corporate business practice, you are just plain wrong.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @alrescha @arstechnica @whix100 I have no doubt 3rd party repairers have a vested interest in RtR but the manufacturers are also in the repair business and you donโ€™t seem to be bothered by that strangely enough. I repair myself when I can so I care about myself, thanks for your concerns. Again you are wrong and your arguments for justifying questionable business practices are empty. We already regulate unfair practice. Why not app stores?

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @alrescha @arstechnica @whix100 Apple losing money on repair service is a lie written in a lobbying letter. They obfuscated the figures that could prove whether itโ€™s true or not. I dare anyone in Appleโ€™s leadership to say it under oath in front of the Senate ๐Ÿ˜‚.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @alrescha @arstechnica @whix100 Side note about your laughable threat of price increasing: my iPhone 14 already costed me 4x what the iPhone 6 costed me at the time. I could repair the latter on my own, part pairing made it impossible to repair the former. If I am going to pay more regardless, might as well have my right to repair and the ability to side load as I see fit.

    Ever since the update to iOS17, I was unable to use my watch due to the sideloaded Pebble app constantly crashing badly. But I recently found out that iMazing could help restore the original IPA which is supposed to be a bit less broken than sideloaded. It seems to be indeed the case. Now I can at least load and manage apps/watchfaces. This is giving me more confidence that I can get back to using regular and transition away from the Watch by using the Pebble time.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    I sold my Watch. My wrist is free again now for the and my regular . I have to admit though, the nice thing about Apple devices is that they retain pretty well their value. I somehow sold mine at the same discounted price I paid at the time.

    Despite my nearing 9 years old, it still gives me 4-5 days of battery life. Admittedly I have not used it consistently for all these years but it is still impressive. I forgot how good it was.

    Also since it is physical buttons only, I can actually use it even with gloves.

    Stand-by mode to save battery when unworn is perfect too for all these times where I want to alternate with my mechanical

    I know it is a bit unusual but I own a , a and a watch yet I donโ€™t have any . I am going to fix that soon as I am missing a field watch in my collection. Hint: I went very cheap as I intend for it to be my beater ๐Ÿ˜.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    It just arrived. Behold my newest watch and the only in my collection: the infamous SNK809 ๐Ÿ˜Š. 7S26 automatic movement with no manual rewind and no hacking (but you can kind of hack, if you know you know). One of the worst OEM straps I have ever seen. Day-date complication with a huge transition delay. Hardlex so not a sapphire crystal. But 37mm with exhibition case back and likely the cheapest automatic you can get. It gets the job done.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @r_df_ng Most of my watches are dress/dress-sporty watches and a lot more expensive. I canโ€™t really use an $8.5K Grand Seiko or a very dressy Poljot as beater. The only 2 watches that could work are my Citizen E650 or Casio G-Shock BA110XSM-2A. But the former is big at 42mm and quite heavy it leaves marks on my wrist due to its weight if I wear all day. And I am hesitant to mistreat the latter despite being rugged because itโ€™s a very limited edition. Both bad at legibility too.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @r_df_ng As for the SNK809, itโ€™s dirt cheap, I really like its 37mm size and you canโ€™t do better in terms of legibility than a black dial with white markers and zero distraction. My wrist is tiny so 37-38mm is usually the sweet spot for me.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @r_df_ng and then you have Cartier which went from historically small watches to huge Santos XL that look like giant handcuffs for no apparent reason ๐Ÿซ . Hopefully nobody follows their trends ๐Ÿ™

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @r_df_ng considering their prices and how easily they scratch, you are brave if you are using them as beater ๐Ÿ˜‚. Itโ€™s ironic that they are known for their rectangular/square cases yet I actually prefer their round models like Pasha or Ballon Bleu but I wouldnโ€™t mind a Santos 100 or medium if I manage to find a deal someday.
