I hate VPN!

It never worked out of the box for me. There are soooooo many moving parts.

Debugging is difficult.

And it's always the clients fault...

psycodepath,
@psycodepath@mastodon.social avatar

@heiglandreas Not saying that it took 2 hours each for 3 guys with a CS background to find out that the router of a person, not to be named in this toot, had some odd priority to the ISP dns even though primary and secondary dns were assigned when connected to the vpn...

So yeah pretty easy stuff and it just works. Cries in wasted lifetime

Not sure whether I'm blind, but I can't see how to install PECL itself anywhere on the PECL site. Trying out a Windows setup for the first time in decades.

psycodepath,
@psycodepath@mastodon.social avatar

@afilina uff. I can't have a look at my Setup right now but i think prebuild binaries are the way to go (i use chocolatey for local deps, so those would be located in your c:\tools\php<version> folder.

If you can not get a prebuild .dll of your ext you'll need the php-sdk to compile it. (Had to do it for mcrypt and php 8.2 once)

I believe i spent a whole evening trying to get pecl on Windows until i opted for the above

@grmpyprogrammer i would not Dare to invest that kind of money in a company that lays of necessary staff when they already have massive QA issues.

I think with an established brand with people in the board, with better impulse control than a 3 y/o, you are way better off.

@nixCraft Just publish a leftpad to crates, wrap it in a exec call inside an npm package and promote is as "rust enabled transpiled asynchronous reactive decoupler" stack. You'll at least get three new frameworks using rust in the first 5 minutes after you published your Blogpost on Hacker news

But joke aside even though the Impact is pretty low and an actual attack is unlikely a fix won't hurt though

psycodepath,

@afilina hmm, don't know about how legacy (pre autoload area is probably insane to get a setup to run) but if psr-0 / psr-4 is present in the codebase i could imagine that rector could like fix maybe some of the things hindering you to adopt static analyse tools.

I was amazed with how little effort you could fix even large codebases with it.

But probably you already have tried it or it is just not feasible

I’m a software developer with about 6 years of experience. My most recent work was in Rust, but I’m also comfortable with C++ and Go, and happy to work with any language. Most of my experience is with, broadly speaking, backend work. I also have SRE skills, a strong background in mathematics and CS, experience working with distributed systems and cryptography, and experience prioritizing and organizing work within a team.

I would prefer a job that:

  1. Provides a non-negative value to society.
  2. Preferably is remote, but I live in Switzerland and am willing to relocate to English or German speaking countries or Poland if the offer is interesting enough.
  3. Works on something long-term, rather than chasing trends.

Any leads appreciated!

@timorl the company i work for is located in munich Germany and Wroclaw Poland. We're looking for a Senior Backend Developer right now. joinus.limango.com

A lot of php an go. Pretty diverse working place. Can't say If Switzerland would be okay to work from since it is non eu.

If you have any questions feel free to ask

SEO spam is pretty desperate. They offer to make your website more visible for the internet, but they found your website by the dozens without special SEO work anyway.

@SenseException another question you could ask, of their tactics Work so great why do they contact you? If they can make people buy any product, why not their own?

nixCraft, to random
@nixCraft@mastodon.social avatar

Programming languages are tools. Just like a hammer doesn't automatically make you a great carpenter, simply knowing Rust or C++ or Go or any other lang won't instantly make you a better developer. I am just saying

psycodepath,
@psycodepath@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft the experiences you gain using those Tools however will. Especially If you try out new paradigms. It helps to keep the mind staying open for new ideas.

Popularity seems to be the only metric for truth nowadays. There is very little scientific method or intellectual debate anymore. There are mostly polls, ratios, peer pressure and appeals to authority. What little debate is left often lacks good faith.

I mostly stopped engaging in debates, especially with people I don't know. I would rather be perceived as insensitive by leaving someone hanging than to waste time constructing arguments that will be shat on, or worse, be met with aggression.

psycodepath,
@psycodepath@mastodon.social avatar

@afilina i don't know If this changed or the audience just is a broader crossection of society.

But good to practice self care and avoid the snake pits

psycodepath,
@psycodepath@mastodon.social avatar

@afilina probably dependend on the forum. In tech maybe outside that at least some trolls were always present in my memories.

But the "repeat a anything enough times and it becomes the truth" was way amplified by the new media formats.

Generative AI and bots did their contribution as well unfortunately

psycodepath,

@rob it still amazes me how a few hundred mega bytes of carefully (on a 3000$ macbook) crafted react apps can deliver great static content.

Especially with highjacked clipboard and/or scrolling. That are the best!
