I wish Duolingo would do proper English rather than the American version. Trying to translate kraan to tap, but failing to find tap in the options. Before realising it had Faucet as an option. Faucet is an Americanism. For reasons that make no sense.

Wanna know how to reduce flights with high speed rail?

Look at ITALY, not FRANCE

Roma - Milano is so damned good, with two operators, excellent comfort, and great timetables from very early morning to very late evening - it makes no sense to fly

Banning a handful of Bordeaux - Orly flights is welcome, but it’s nowhere near enough. The rail offer in France needs to improve too

And France could run a hell of a lot more trains than it does on its existing infrastructure - especially between the regions, but even some Paris terminals (like Austerlitz) have spare capacity

It could even run more trains off-peak without needing to acquire more trains

So ok, short haul flight bans are a good 🏑 but better and more trains would be a suitable 🥕

I see lots of people jumping up and down about how great it is France banned some short haul flights

It’s flights where rail is <2.5 hours. That means a handful of flights to Orly are banned. Needs to be <4 hours

Lufthansa replacing connecting flights with trains to/from Frankfurt Airport will save more CO2 than this flight ban

Oh and SNCF’s rail timetables in France are still awful - try for example better Toulouse-Paris timetables as well

I see a bunch of people are demanding a "pause" in AI development and deployment

Ethically speaking, not wrong

But that assumes the people running the firms developing these tools have any notion of what's right and wrong, and understand the dangers of what they're doing

My impression is they don't, and political decision makers are too weak and in thrall to Silicon Valley

So chances a pause happens? Close to zero, I'd wager
