There's a lot that's alarming in this article, but perhaps the most alarming part is the NYC spokesperson assering that the problem can be fixed via upgrades:

@emilymbender It's the end result of decades of writing code with an eye to "beating the turing test", where "beating the turing test" explicitly requires fooling the judges. It's not a surprise that they have gotten really good at writing code to fool the judges.

When you're writing code to fool people, fooling people isn't a bug, it's a design feature.

Work chat turned to discussing metric versus imperial measurement, so I got to roll out pictures of my first lunchbox, dating from the sunset of the Carter administration. Friends, it was an exciting time. https://www.ebay.com/itm/305119371827

@jmac The lunchbox needs no defense, it's obviously trolling.

@chockenberry @Migueldeicaza I was going to say hash tables are just a special case of caching but I guess that works too.

It would be nice if you didn't have to quit ubuntu-software and manually kill its background job and update on the command line when ubuntu-software tells you it needs to update snap-store:

$ sudo snap refresh snap-store
error: cannot refresh "snap-store": snap "snap-store" has running apps (ubuntu-software), pids:
2490
$ sudo kill 2490
$ sudo snap refresh snap-store
snap-store 41.3-77-g7dc86c8 from Canonical✓ refreshed

@lproven Life Expectancy at 30 and 40 and 50 was not nearly as dramatically lower before modern medicine as LE at birth, because most of the increase in LE has been reducing infant and child mortality.

Like from 1850 to now LE at age 40 has only increased for men from 67 to 77. Women from 68 to 80.

At age 60, for men from 70 to 80, for women from 74 to 83.

resuna,
@resuna@ohai.social avatar

@lproven Oddly, the main increase started for women in the '30s, but for men it didn't start to significantly increase until the '70s.

Just noticed that Chrome now has a new native "reader mode" that displays pages with everything except the text stripped out, and lots of options for how you want that text displayed. Having this native in the browser is definitely a win.

I made an HTML/DOM viewer you can paste into your console to view or debug any website in 3D. Choose from random/gradient/clear colors or whether layers have sides.

You can save it as a bookmarklet so it's 1 click away. It's just a tiny IIFE JS function.

    @w7voa I just read this article: https://www.steveherman.press/p/unraveling-threads and it's extremely strong, though a bit depressing (often the case with factually correct articles).

    I wish I could disagree with your claim that Mastodon will remain marginal because it's not owned by a large company, but I can't.

    But there is one line that's... more formulaic than the rest and it's this one: "but Mastodon can be technically overwhelming for novices."

    I feel like the funny thing for me with the Tiktok ban is that a lot of Americans, on either side of the debate, don't seem to realize that Tiktok feels to Americans like every single social media platform feels to people outside the US. You're telling me the app is located outside your country and your government's control, and you don't know how its data gets handled in that country? That's every app, to me.

    Next week in UK politics:

    Tories - rumours of a plot to oust Sunak and replace him with Margaret Thatcher. “Yes, she’s dead, but that makes her more relatable to our voters,” said one.

    Labour - Starmer announces that Ferrets are anti-woman and anti-Semitic, and that supporting them will be grounds for expulsion from the party.

    When my eldest was in kindergarten, they came home one day with an assignment to count something in their house.

    We got a note from the teacher the next day, which I will paraphrase (because it's been 12 years): "Your child is very bright and clearly knows how to count, but you should probably explain that you don't actually have 15 computers in your house."

    Our response: "Oh, you're right, Z missed a few in the basement server rack, it's actually closer to 25."

    @norgralin @jernej__s @katre Definitely mouse, a modern USB optical mouse has at least a 12 MHz embedded processor to handle the USB protocol, plus a probably 20 MHz or better DSP for the image processing, either of which is probably faster than any of the early mouse-based computers in the '70s.
