It’s another quite nice morning in Paris, especially because the forecast rain for the day is apparently is nope-ing out and it’ll just be warm. Today is second-tier Monets and fake luxury goods, and I’m looking forward to those.

As is traditional, I did a “eh, walk for a bit then hop the metro” and I’m apparently by the Louvre already so I might as well keep going.

I suspect I would walk a whole lot less if I actually lived here, but eh, whatever, vacation.

@wordshaper It always makes me think of this scene from the Sopranos https://youtu.be/0BgnT9SSqyc

Rain today in Paris, though warmer. So on the one hand a great day for visiting the catacombs, on the other I may have to deal with my American discomfort of sitting in a cafe for hours sipping coffee. (Which always feels weird, not gonna lie)

I suspect this won’t be another 20km+ day of walking which is probably for the best, I could use a little break there.

@wordshaper Next to place d'Italie is La Butte aux Cailles, nice village with a lot of street art.

“The Techno-Optimist Manifesto | Andreessen Horowitz”

This manifesto is one of the more horrific documents I’ve read lately, largely because of how normalised its rhetoric has become

It’s fascism. Like falangism with the catholicism swapped out for the prosperity doctrine https://a16z.com/the-techno-optimist-manifesto/

@baldur whoa, in the list of patron saints at the end, there’s Marinetti, the co-author of the Fascist Manifesto https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascist_Manifesto

It’s always surprising just how empty Paris is in the morning. Sundays doubly so, it’s almost 10 and folks are only starting to get out and about.

I always forget that Paris is kind of a small city. Not Boston small, of course, but still, not large and very walkable.

I probably don’t need to keep this introductory book to artificial intelligence published in 2002.

a sample page that doesn’t really have anything to say about machine translation after the 1960s except that it’s found “some” uses

@rgs@metasocial.com avatar

@0xabad1dea Yes but is it in the Books3 database?

So iOS 17 adds a new feature to make a pic show up on another person's iPhone when you call them ("contact posters"), and no way to disable this on the receiving end? What were they thinking?

rgs,
@rgs@metasocial.com avatar

@richardgrant this article literally says: « This process only prevents your Contact Poster from appearing on other people’s iPhones. Their Contact Posters might still show up on yours, so we need a different setting option to disable that. »

Lately I noticed I react to stress either by going to social media (including less-social media like reddit) or by playing simple games like Wordle. My new strategy is to just jam on language learning. If I'm fluent in French by January, you'll know what kind of year it's been.

rgs,
@rgs@metasocial.com avatar

@tshirtman @ovid @ZachWeinersmith It's fun when the gender is used to distinguish similar words: "le livre" (the book, exception to the rule), "la livre" (the pound).
For Dutch, there are a few rules, like: diminutive in -je -> het, noun from a compound verb -> het, people -> de (except diminutives like meisje), words in -heid -> de... I don't remember much more than that :)

the longer I work with really large stuff: code re-use is at some point mostly in your way. I'm optimizing for "throw-away-ability" to get easily OUT of something (or make it easily removable..) and keeping dependencies low is good too

It's not a secret that I love Star Trek, but I'm getting a bit tired of how overtly Starfleet/The Federation is mostly "Muricans in space", especially in the newer series.

I remember in Disco, when asked where on earth they wanted to go on vacation, everyone mentioned an American place, and in SNW, Uhura, who is nominally from Kenya, acts fully American as well.

And of course, the last episode had a "midwestern" colony.

A lot of cabs in London have advertising on them and frankly it seems sad and desperate. Space is getting fragmented smaller and smaller, and the value of advertising in it shrinks nonlinearly.

We’re hurtling towards a Dick-ian future where everything is covered in advertising that has no worth or point.

Seriously, English would be much easier to learn for foreigners if it had rules by which one could derive the pronunciation of a word from its spelling. You know, like most other languages do. But NO, you have to learn every word one by one. (And I'm not even mentioning words that have one spelling and two pronunciations depending on meaning, like lead or read. You're supposed to derive meaning from pronunciation, not the other way around!)

If you want to replace your customer service by a chatbot, it will help if your customers speak English. If they speak, say, Lithuanian (a very complex language, close to Sanskrit, with a very small written corpus to train a model with), it will be much more difficult. This is how inequalities compound.

Today we celebrate the 110th birthday of Bibha Chowdhuri, a particle physicist from India. She discovered mesons, and also worked on experimental observation of muons. Despite these remarkable achievements she remains in obscurity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibha_Chowdhuri
