“In one of those moments that you can’t believe is not satire, Antony Blinken met with Arab-American leaders and warned them that if Palestine got statehood, the US would defund the United Nations and potentially the World Food Program, plunging the developing world into starvation. It wasn’t enough for these fascists to starve innocents in Palestine, they’re now threatening to do it across the world. They would really rather kill millions more than stop doing genocide.”

@Vittoria @aral Agreed. That doesn't cut it for me.

@aral I am unable to verify that from any other source. Careful with this one.

One argument against New Zealand moving to four year parliaments is that there is no second chamber. By all means have a longer term, but in the absence of more regular mandate refreshes, add some checks and balances.

@billbennett MMP, producing unwieldy coalitions as it does, combined with a 2nd chamber.... Ugh.

Hard to get the balance right between getting-things-done and tearing-each-other-apart, isn't it.

Could Covid-19 also be blamed for the increased frequency and severity of colds and flu? Has it damaged our ability to fight off infections?

Northland emergency doctor Gary Payinda said some viruses, which used to cause barely a sniffle in healthy adults, were now putting people in hospital.

"We're now seeing your typical regular healthy middle-aged person presenting to ED with bad cases of RSV. And that's pretty novel for us," Payinda said.

He suspected may have damaged people's immunity in subtle ways that fell below the threshold to qualify as long Covid.

"Employers are talking about the inordinate numbers of employees that they have out sick due to repeated respiratory infection. Yet they're doing almost nothing to protect their employees from repeated respiratory infection.

"...it's not a good idea to subject yourself to unnecessary repeat infections from something that could do short and long-term damage to your body."

Some differences between and

  • Comments with -10 score are collapsed by default.
  • Communities are organized into topics. See https://piefed.social/topics.
  • Image-heavy communities can have a tiled/masonry view, like https://piefed.social/c/pics@lemmy.world
  • People who get downvoted a lot end up with a ‘low reputation’ indicator next to their name. You’ll know it when you see it.
  • Hide all posts based on keyword filters.
  • Keyboard shortcuts.
  • Upvotes in meme communities do not add to reputation.
  • Better UI design (somewhat subjective!)
  • Improved hotness ranking algorithm (subjective)

I’m pretty happy with how tools for are coming along!

Moderators can:

  • delete & edit anything in community
  • ban people from community, and unban them.
  • review reports about content in that community
  • mark a report as resolved / ignored.

When a report is resolved or ignored, all reports regarding that content are also resolved. So if something receives 150 reports then mods won’t need to click 150 times to resolve all reports. Ignored reports stop all future reports from being accepted.

The person who created the community can appoint other moderators.

Reports federate to and from so if a PieFed user reports some content that came from a Lemmy instance the moderators on the Lemmy instance will be notified about the content being reported.

There’s still more to be done with federation of bans, a moderation log, etc. But it’s shaping up nicely!
