I miss the days when Ubuntu was inspiring, an ideal to aspire to. We need a new distro that captures the essence of this again.

Does open source have a systemic UX problem YES. BUT, is that why most people tend to think open source software is "bad"? NO.

I'm increasingly realizing that the problem is many-fold, but boils down to a couple major sources:

  1. TERRIBLE bias, fed by thought leaders who are too lazy to do their homework, or literally paid to shill for their sponsors.

  2. Familiarity combined with general laziness. So many folks literally don't want to learn something new: they want exactly what they've known.

Small update: couldn't do a stream last month due to some pressing work taking up time. However, I'll be back on this month, should all go as planned!

Also, planning on new CSS + design + open source content! What would you like to see?

Some people assumed the hashtag follow bug was an indication of a switch to an algorithmic home feed and let me just say, I would never do that without some form of warning and community consensus.

It's a bug.

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup it's only a true bug if it's in the order hemiptera

Otherwise, it's a creature, not a bug 🤣

An early preview of the redesigned @pixelfed UI

It's about time we stepped out of the "federated instagram" shadow

While it will remain familiar, I'm eager to build on our Collections (think Pinterest), Exif data (flickr, 500px) and Portfolios (deviantart) features

We are not abandoning the social photo sharing aspects of IG

Rather we will be extending beyond them to provide new and exciting ways to share photos + videos, more details soon!

@dansup @pixelfed Improved UX will be the biggest deal for me. Excited to see a more streamlined posting experience, for instance.

I know I just started writing this yesterday and shouldn't show such an early/unpolished prototype but check this out:

  • full oauth auth/pinia state
  • basic skeleton layout
  • basic feeds
  • basic profile layout
  • modals

All using the vue3 composition API and existing backend pixelfed apis (with some slight config tweaking)

Super exciting times for @pixelfed

@dansup @pixelfed Sweet! I've been longing for simplified UX on Pixelfed, so glad to see this.

@dansup Probably the wrong place to ask, but are there any plans to improve/simplify the process for adding new posts on the web app?

I can design a workflow for this if that'd be helpful.

We just held our 2023 sprint and worked hard on improving KDE's video editor Kdenlive for three days straight.

We tackled bugs affecting grouped clips, the workflow, the organization of menu items, and much more.

As you might have noticed earlier today, I accidentally reset the poll from yesterday 😳

So, here's a warning for poll creators:

If you edit a Mastodon poll, changing the options at all will reset the poll to zero, even if people have already voted on it. It will do this automatically without warning, so only edit options if you're okay with resetting the poll.

To see more advice on creating polls on Mastodon, click here:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-post-a-poll-on-mastodon/

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup @feditips @Gargron It can be argued that you should be able to edit a poll and keep the voting data, although this can create some other tricky issues.

Here's the argument:

Let's suppose you've made a typo or an oversight, but you don't want to now go back and collect the votes you've already gathered (because even here, without the algorithm driven timeline, people keep it moving). What do you do then? Creating a new poll for this seems a bit much.

If recent events have proven anything, it's that Open Source software has always been capable.

No, not the individual applications themselves. Of course, if a certain software lacks features or functionality available in a comparable software "competitor", then it's not yet capable.

No, what I mean is - Open Source software as a model, has always been capable.

Open Source has a stigma problem. Not an ability problem. Not even a funding problem. If you assume it can't, simply it won't.

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

It's often assumed that anything free is inferior, but this goes beyond the realm of mere assumptions of capability.

Take Inkscape for instance. Professionals can and do use it. I use it. Okay, maybe I'm a little biased about my own self here 😉.

But the point stands. Inkscape doesn't lack capability. If you're using it for what it can do (and does very well, I might add), you'll come away satisfied. So will your clients, or company, or whoever depends on you to depend on it to get results.

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

Yet, I can say from experience, many people simply assume that it just can't be that good (or usable at all), because it's "not Illustrator" or "It's not from Serif", or whatever other excuse they use to paint over the fact that their real problem is the assumption that anything free must also be low quality.

And the worst part of this is... "Based on what evidence?"

Where does the stigma actually come from?

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

Take the situation with Godot - a solid 2D and 3D engine with sturdy tools a vibrant community, and the ability to produce results.

Until the fall of... The united front... where was the well deserved hype? Where was the attention? Where was the awe and wonder that suddenly seems to be dawning on so many freshly waking up to the glory of its existence?

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

Granted, Godot was gaining some traction before this. After all, you can't keep a good thing down forever.

But it's truly amazing to me how it took people literally being forced to give up their beloved locked-in ecosystem, to suddenly realize that there's been am open pasture available to them the entire time!

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

@doctormo I expanded on this a bit further in the thread. I agree - it is expensive! And I would love to see greater funding (I also am aiming to participate and put my actual money where my mouth is).

The challenge I see is that our societal perception is that open source development isn't worth our time and therefore our money, hence, talk of funding what's free seems like an affront to many. Likewise, devs rightfully feel it's unreasonable.

We need to change one to achieve the other.

It seems like every service that offers social media management (for example Hootsuite, GoCharlie, Buffer) is pushing community managers and marketing folks to use to generate posts, and even entire campaigns.

Just wanted to emphasize that every word you see here is written by a human, and it always will be.

While we believe there are opportunities for AI that might benefit humanity, the time-honored tradition of talking to our fellow humans is NOT one of those opportunities!

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

@thunderbird I'd love an Open Source tool for social media management of this sort. Open to software suggestions.

⚡ Geotagging your posts is about to get much better

You can already add locations to your posts and explore them on web and mobile

Soon you'll be able to add any location, and easily mass update post locations

We're also working on an Activity extension spec for geotagging, so other projects can use this too!

So here is a conundrum I'm facing with @pixelfed Stories, you can like, react or comment on them right, and those are sent as DM's to the Story author.

Makes sense so far right?

Here is the problem:

Once the Story expires, it's deleted, and when you check your DM's, you'll see the replies but since the Story was deleted you won't be able to tell which one it was.

So should we store a Story preview img, or rotate the Story so only author can see it?

Feedback wanted!

rolandixor,
@rolandixor@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup @pixelfed I think it would be best to preserve the story for the author, but it should also be optional, of course.
