Just checking in to see if Calckey.social is working again for me, and appears it is not. The timeline is very slow to load and frequently doesn't load at all. Very strange. Everything else seems to work. Will resetting the cache make a difference?

rudiev, to random

Still having major trouble with Calckey.social so think I'm going to give it few days and see how things are mid-late week. In the meantime, screengeeks.club and shrediverse.net are running smoothly (screengeeks is also on Calckey while shrediverse is Akkoma).

rudiev, to random

Ok, I have to ask, since almost every single person in my timeline is talking about it, what the heck is Eurovision?

atomicpoet, to random

Someone told me that the Fediverse would never be popular without something equivalent to Facebook’s poke.

Well, here it is.

been slower than usual for anyone else the past few days? I'm assuming it's the big growth spurt. Just wanted to be sure, because sometimes my Comcast internet gets glitchy.

All the movement and animations on CalcKey is kind of annoying. I suppose the good news is that it makes we want to close the browser window and go for a walk.

Can I turn off all the annimations or am I doomed to more exercise and less screen time?

rudiev,

@stpaultim there is a setting to turn off all the animations, under General, and then under Appearance: "Disable MFM"

rudiev,

@Jdreben @stpaultim Agreed. Like, I want to be sensitive to those who physically are bothered by the animations but if you disable by default or have something that hides them automatically, that takes the fun out of it. All I can think of is some notice somewhere on the site to warn folks ahead of time that there are flashy animations here.

I know you all love Fediverse analytics, so here's a peek under the hood at https://calckey.social.

In the first chart, we see active users on https://calckey.social. The red means reading, and the yellow mean writing. For a server of about 1,650, 1/3 are active on a daily basis.

The next chart shows Fediverse requests. That measures how much demand there is for stuff on https://calckey.social.

All of this has resulted in growing pains, but so far, we've risen to the occasion.

It also helps that we have a passionate community of people who are welcoming and help others as needed ♥

Glad this server is leading the way with !

Fediverse requests

rudiev,

@atomicpoet where can we donate to help cover the costs of maintenance and upgrades and what not?

W00t! Just scheduled my first "vacation" for mid-June. A few days off to just lounge, do whatever, then three days in Raleigh for the Southeastern Plant Symposium to find out what's new and exciting in the plant world, plus a silent auction and a chance to score some rare !

Welcome to all the newcomers to lately! Definitely a bit different than Mastodon, there are some really cool features but it takes a little bit of poking around, so give yourself a full day or several to explore (most are tucked under "More" in the main menu on the left side)

Color me shocked, lol. So thrilled to be moving quickly towards cutting ties with a Facebook property 🙌

It could very well be that I'm just a weirdo but...anyone else find that sometimes instrumental songs (especially acoustic/piano) that are sad or melancholy in tone can actually lift your mood and/or relax you?

Always fascinating how the brain processes different types of at different times.

Just discovered Western Skies Motel on ...it's somber and haunting acoustic guitar with minimal backing instruments https://westernskiesmotel.bandcamp.com/album/settlers

Disappointed by @Gargron's comments where he dismisses medium-sized instances as being for people who want to enjoy social media "in isolation" from others. His gravitation towards centralizing Mastodon and favoring huge instances that can't adequately combat crypto-spam and trolls is going to make it a very easy decision to maintain a presence only on and .

Quite unfortunate when someone lets one bad experience on an instance color their entire view of Mastodon or the Fediverse as a whole. A certain person is going around here bad-mouthing smaller instances, making unsubstantiated claims that smaller ones enforce rules capriciously. This isn't true. If anything, admins at smaller instances are quite responsive, and are quite judicious about when to resort to banning. My best experiences have been on smaller ones like Shrediverse.net (Akkoma), and regenerate.social (Mastodon). The bigger ones have struggled at times to keep up with booting crypto spammers and trolls.

Sorry, I get defensive of the smaller instances because in my view they hold the key to the health of the Fediverse.

Louder for those in the back:

hate deserves no safe harbors, whether on Twitter or Discord or the Fediverse.

Sorry transphobe apologists, but there's not going to be a massive exodus from Mastodon or Calckey because admins take a hardline stance against bigotry.

BlakeL, to fediverse

I've said it once and I'll say it again; louder for those in the back:
Fediblock and quick instance blocking are going to be the downfall of the .
It's going to be why people go to and .
We've formed our own little culture here and while some parts are great, we've really got to be more receptive to people with different needs and different tolerances.

RE: https://mastodon.social/users/choyer/statuses/110324110794771129

rudiev,

@BlakeL They were blocked because the admin of that instance refused to take action against hateful attacks on LGBTQ folks there. Can we not do some basic fact finding before making assumptions and jumping to conclusions?

rudiev,

@BlakeL I don't know about you but I don't want to share a space with Nazis and transphobes or anyone who promulgates hate towards any group of people

rudiev, to random

Seeing instance admins having to defend their decision to not deal with other instances that don't take the safety and wellbeing of oppressed groups seriously, is rather disheartening. Are we really still having to debate whether transphobic/homephobic/racist/sexist hate is "protected speech" and therefore somehow acceptable?

If your attitude about hate directed at the trans community is anything other than disgust....you can fuck right off

kainoa, to random

I don't care how large your server is. If you refuse to moderate against transphobia and hatred, I refuse to federate with you.

rudiev,

@kainoa good on you for doing that. I just had to explain to someone that the whole reason I'm in the Fediverse and not Twitter is because Twitter tolerates (encourages) that transphobic shit (and Nazis and fascists, etc.). It was the LACK of policing that caused me and others to look elsewhere.

Oldmantoast, to random

Is it considered bad form to attempt to import my followed list from my Mastodon account? I'm curious about the process, but don't want to cause either the members of the instance or the admin team with a headache.

rudiev,

@Oldmantoast Nope, won't bother anyone. The code does all the heavy lifting 🙂 Fully automated. Simply export your follows to a CSV file in settings on your Mastodon account, then import than CSV file in settings on here, and it'll bring all your follows over. Depending on how many you were following, it could take 10 to 15 minutes for everything to populate.
