At a certain point, if I want to make 2D games that aren’t bound to a specific closed-source engine (Construct, Defold) or proprietary language/GUI-based app (Godot), and can run on basically anything (including HTML5, consoles, Playdate)…

…I’m gonna have to learn C, aren’t I 🫠

In the year of our lord 2024, these are things I never want to see as a marketing hook ever again:

"solo developer”

"developed the game’s engine and editor from scratch while using it to make the game”

"Super Low latency”

"looks like it could have come from the Commodore 64 era” (it very much does not)

@aeva It's one of those "citation needed" things for me, especially when touted on the engine side. Feels gimmicky. Of all the factors that may introduce noticeable latency at millisecond scale—monitor refresh rate, wireless input interference—the game/engine itself usually isn't the primary culprit these days. Especially in 2D games, and even more so in 2D platformers where we have all the old tricks (coyote time, jump buffering, et al.) for improving feel.

@aeva Fair enough! I'm not big into most genres that get frame-precise (fighting games, for example) and I've never noticed latency as a player where it was bad enough to disrupt my experience.

Maybe it's just me! I grew up on games like Mega Man with some arguably lousy/ice-skate’y controls, so it's entirely possible that I'm more comfortable with iffy timing? Or at least don't notice it as much, perhaps. I'll take any modern platformer’s latency over MM2.

"The entire experience feels just like a MacBook"

Seriously what is the point then?

Why would anyone not just get the laptop that has a lot more apps for it and an operating system that doesn't suck for multitasking?

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thomasfuchs Because a folding touchscreen MacBook with detachable keyboard doesn't exist yet

samf,
@samf@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thomasfuchs I mean, perhaps YOU don’t. But as a daily iPad + Magic Keyboard user, with use-cases that prefer the keyboard and trackpad while some prefer touch, I certainly would!

@thomasfuchs I think you're conflating your personal needs/experience with everyone's needs/experience here. This "very small niche" you speak of is multiple billion dollar industries.

But, seriously. About the memes.

Waaaay back when, I saw a bunch of My Little Pony reaction images. That led me to watching Friendship is Magic (the first few seasons anyway) and it was so much better than I was expecting out of a show made to sell toys.

Lately I've been seeing Pomni everywhere so I looked up the source... I was supposed to go to bed an hour ago. I've now binged most of The Amazing Digital Circus and it's so good. Can't wait for episode 3

@beeoproblem My daughter is OBSESSED with TADC. And she generally has pretty good taste in animation (Adventure Time, Gravity Falls) so it’s on my radar!

How about a with a fun twist? 🍋🍸

Post one snapshot from your project without any additional context and let people in the comments guess what your game is about!

I'm physically well. I just don see much future. I can't make Godot work as i need, My pc takes almost an hour to open an unreal project and unity... is unity.

I use godot because is very light. My pc cant handle much more.

They denied my disability again this year, so in general futures seems very dark.

I been trying to be positive, but truth is that being poor and disable is almost a guarantee to keep being poor and disabled.

@YoSoyFreeman You've been making really incredible progress on the Godot character controller + collision work. Seems like it’s much better than what Godot offers today, but isn't quite perfect?

In similar situations I've been in, I've found it helpful to know when to call it "good enough” and move on to the next thing. With where things stand today, what's still required to use it in an actual game?
