everyone is talking about final cut being a subscription on ipad. the alternative is a $300 iPad app. I'd have trouble choking down an iPad app above $20. idk, some mental barrier just prevents me from spending that much on mobile software

Is it just me or do certain fonts look really weird on Windows? Text unrelated

samhenrigold,
@samhenrigold@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc Windows renders text really oddly, it bugs me as well. From my understanding, ClearType tries to optimize for screen readability (often by butchering the letterforms to fit into a pixel grid) while Quartz tries to match how it would look if printed (at the expense of crispy characters). Could you please help me find some folklore?

The Brothers Grimm recorded the story "Der süße Brei" about a magic porridge pot.
When instructed, it produces food until told to stop. One day, the owner forgets the magic word and the village is engulfed in porridge.

If you are NOT German or English-speaking, does your culture have a similar cautionary tale?
If so, what foodstuff is it about?

Thanks gang, boosts appreciated.

@Edent This sounds pretty much 1:1 with a book we read in kindergarten, Strega Nona.

@LeeFromVT Yeah, just a simple rel="me" link to confirm a link between some site and your account. Not tremendously helpful for us mere mortals but useful for something like @gbhnews with an established external domain.

I recently discovered this really neat, undocumented preference in Keynote while doing some good ol fashioned Spelunking:

defaults write com.apple.iWork.Keynote EnableCustomAccelerationCurves YES

Enjoy your fancy custom timing curves

I demo a Magic Move transition that moves shapes between slides. There's a new Acceleration section in the Keynote sidebar with bezier curve handles. I change it from an ease-in-out curve to an exponential curve and the magic move animates accordingly.

🆕 blog! “Why aren't there more visual programming languages? (An ode to DRAKON)”

I think the computer programming industry is about to reach a reckoning. No, not because ChatGPT can poorly plagiarise buggy code - but because a whole generation of kids have grown up with Scratch. And they'll want professional tools which have Scratch's level of usa…

Figured you'd all enjoy this fun lil bit of trivia. In 2007, when Steve Jobs introduced the iPod touch, there was a dramatic reveal in the keynote half way through that it had wi-fi and Safari. He went back to the demo and made a previously-hidden Safari icon pop onto the home screen (https://youtu.be/t_cNLpUXPdQ?t=2464). I thought this was just for the keynote, but it's a real mode you can force enable. I managed to do it on this emulated iPod touch:

A screencast of an original iPod touch springboard. The mouse double clicks the gap in the icon grid, and the YouTube app appears with a pop/bounce animation. Then I reveal the Safari app, and finally the iTunes store app in the bottom corner.

Quick typographic crash course:

• 👈 This is a “Bullet” character (U+2022). You can type it on a Mac with Option + 8 or Alt + Numpad 7 on Windows. Use this for lists and nothing else.
· 👈 This is an “Interpunct” or “Middot” character (U+00B7). It’s smaller than a bullet. Option + Shift + 9 on a Mac or Alt + Numpad 250 on Windows. Use an interpunct for everything else (text separation, syllable separation)

Please boost far and wide to save a soul from typographic damnation.
