@sanae@carfree.city

I mostly post about very local transportation issues in SF and car free life and activism, sometimes other interests like fibre arts or like a cool tree that I saw.

I generally won't approve follows from strangers with too few posts for me to see what you're about.

If I followed you cause you post art or something, you're welcome to follow back, but it's fine if you don't want to hear about bike lanes.

I hate it when people say Someone Else Should Do This Thing, cause someone else is never going to do it

But someone should write an op ed about how the reason why driving has gotten so much worse lately is that all the transit cutbacks have lead to a huge increase in the number of people driving in our city, and the only way to fix the problem is by making transit fast and reliable enough that people go back to taking transit

And that future transit cutbacks will make this problem much worse

when I was in San Jose this weekend I was waiting for the bus, and a guy who had just moved here was having trouble figuring out if he was waiting for the right bus, and not that I knew much but at least I could tell him roughly which direction BART would be

and then he asked if we could connect on Linkedin

I'm trying to find a good non-paywalled source, but it sounds like it will now be the case in the US that coal power plants have to either close down or capture most of their CO2 (lol) in the next 10ish years?

If this happens, this seems like pretty good news. The two biggest climate change issues are transportation and fossil fuel based electricity. Closing coal (and natural gas) power plants is harder for individuals to influence politically but it's just as important

Dear drivers, "oops I'm sorry" does not in fact make it ok to run a red light

I've been avoiding outside, how's the Earth Day Volleyball Game on hippie hill doing

Thanks to everyone who didn't drive to the festivities today

Apparently the fog machine is out of fog

sanae,
@sanae@carfree.city avatar

Otherwise it's basically the same as any other sunny day in the park?

@sanae@carfree.city avatar

I really wanted to make fun of the city's plan to shut down 420 by scheduling a volleyball tournament on top of it but it seems to have worked

Hippie Hill has been labeled the "spectator area" for this unexpectedly popular volleyball tournaments

There are also cops on dirt bikes presumably to enforce mandatory volleyball

There are a ton of park rangers and cops around but none of them seem to care to do anything about the 4 different dubiously sober people I just saw drive through the pedestrian part of the park

sanae,
@sanae@carfree.city avatar

Now there are a lot of people riding motorbikes on the mixed use path screaming at people to get out of the way and trying to pick fights with people

sanae,
@sanae@carfree.city avatar

The fight did not happen because the pedestrian in question had a large and increasingly agitated dog (the dog was clearly not being aggressive, and trying to get away) and motorbike asshole's friend was apparently not keen on getting in a fight with a large dog

Also the motorbike guy was like threatening also to call the cops on the pedestrian for standing in the "bike lane" (there was no bike lane, it's a mixed use path)

sanae,
@sanae@carfree.city avatar

it would be really nice if I could go on a little walk in the park on a pedestrian and bike only path and not have to worry that there will be a driver there threatening people #banCarsFromSidewalks

What are the best places (bike/transit accessible) to see wildflowers in the Bay area right now (or more likely this weekend)

Some people at my bus stop are l apparently taking Muni for the first time, coming from the ballet

We explained how everyone works - cash fares, how far the bus goes and how the route changes, why it says "on detour"
They were like good thing you were here to explain it! I didn't tell them we had just gotten out of Muni Diaries, a Muni-themed storytelling event for Muni fans

They're training waymos to block pedestrian crosswalks, if you wondered if self driving cars were going to be safer

Anyone who wants to ‘help’ governments set up Mastodon or something erm, respectfully don’t understand governments. The problems are never ‘we don’t know how to do something’ (most of the times we know how to do something). The problems are why we can’t do something (never technical, always money, people, procurement and policies)

sanae,
@sanae@carfree.city avatar

@skinnylatte I've wondered what the implications of "elected officials in the US are not allowed to block people" would be in a fediverse context

Like would a government run server be obliged to federate with everyone?

While I previously found April Fool's to be annoying, I've decided it's actually a good idea. Keep an eye out for my joke post shortly.

Yelled at these people a bit but they clearly think the law is for other people and it's totally cool to drive on a pedestrian path to get the perfect Instagram photo

It would be cheaper to let them stay there rather than put them in jail actually

Or maybe put them in charge of fixing the housing crisis, 8K to buy an apartment in Millbrae sounds pretty good to me

Affordable access to asthma medication is actually also a bike issue

(And traffic pollution and climate change both causes and exacerbates asthma)

I laugh at foodies who say ‘the best dimsum is at the cheapest takeout places’ when (1) they get their stuff frozen from the same places and (2) nice dimsum with your family is the only way I know how to dimsum

Koi Palace (Daly City) is one of them.

HL Peninsula (South SF), Peony Jade or Ming’s Tasty (Oakland), East Ocean (Alameda)

In the city, Harborview and Yank Sing. I prefer the former tho Yank Sing has a few classics that are better.

@skinnylatte @suldrew I'd say they do play the role of cafeteria food (and I mean that in a good way)
That's why they aren't open for dinner

So it looks like they are finally addressing the problem of sidewalks being blocked by cars and trucks parked on them in the Richmond and Sunset, making them inaccessible to people in wheelchairs etc

I'll be waiting for the law-and-order crowd to endorse the city cracking down on this rampant lawlessness in SF. I'll be waiting a long time, I suspect

@sanae@carfree.city avatar

I didn't make it to any of the yarn stores in San Rafael or Tiburon because I didn't arrive at the bridge until a bit after 4 and I was not going fast at that point

But I did visit 9 yarn stores by bike or transit throughout the yarn crawl period

I particularly liked Avenue Yarns which is bike + BART able. Also liked The Black Squirrel

AVFKW remains cool but I realized I have bought all the things I want from them and it'll be years before I need more

the whole notion of "not politicizing something" seems to come from the idea that politics is a sort of polite team sport and not like the process by which we make life or death decisions as a society
