It’s ridiculous we put up with sidewalks being so narrow and overcrowded. There’s plenty of space if we didn’t give the lion’s share to cars

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

Yeah I’ve been thinking we should rebrand them as footways instead. Maybe give them their own names. @Simplicator

If riding an ebike is "cheating" compared to other exercise, why do my ebike rides have such a profound effect on my happiness and physical well-being? Why do I have measurably better health and get dramatically more minutes of activity compared to when I was riding a non-electric bike? Why can't I find a single downside to this form of exercise other than cost?

If it walks like exercise and quacks like exercise, maybe just call it exercise and leave off the judgment.

@lzg @marcprecipice agriculture is cheating. Forage only.

A business tax "reform" (cut?) backed by business groups, London Breed, and Aaron Peskin contains a gratuitous poison pill that would kill the @sftransitact (boo!).

But we're soldiering on, as we can still win if the ComMUNIty Transit Act gets more votes. Come to an event, sign it and get involved!

Social housing would solve so many problems but California hates it for some reason. Mayor Breed hates it at the municipal level as well, although in her defense, it may not be ideological, just pettiness about her rival Dean Preston championing it.

@pootriarch it would behoove the city to get a mayor who does it less well

I'm more fun IRL, actually.

@inquiline I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to meet when I was in LA.

In my defense, the light rail line to Long Beach is quite long.

@jwz Hmm, I agree though that it's a problem we can track the travel patterns of billionaires' private jets. Because that implies that billionaires and private jets exist.

It took more than a year of nagging MTA and RecPark, but there’s finally bike racks at Brazil/Persia/Mansell in . Come through ! Perfect place to lock and hike the Philosopher’s Way trail

Another view showing Brazil, which is a bike/ped only street.

“What destroys the poetry of a city? Automobiles destroy it, and they destroy more than the poetry,” sez SF’s first poet laureate, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who I’m reading today along Shelley Promenade.

@timrichards we have a Coleridge Street too!

As extractive “wildcrafting” has become popular, supposedly treaty-protected access to ancestral gathering sites has diminished, says Michelle Week (Sinixt, Arrow Lakes), who runs x̌ast sq̓it, an Indigenous foods farm near .

“You have the privilege to go out and gather these things without fear of harassment, but my community, who’s native to this place, we just don’t have that luxury.”

@Toastie thanks for writing this article! I coincidentally just read about camas (and death camas) in The Dying Grass, by William T. Vollmann.

I would like to vote for a progressive candidate who will fight against cop- and jail-centric responses to public safety at least as hard as they’ll fight tall buildings on the waterfront.

Ideally, harder, since tall buildings on the waterfront are perfectly fine, but I’m setting the bar low.

@luis_in_brief 20 years ago. Blast from the past!

scott, to random
@scott@carfree.city avatar

This is probably not how SF politics works, but I long to live in a world where every progressive group in the city would tell Aaron Peskin putting a charter amendment on the ballot to hire hundreds of cops is utterly disqualifying for a progressive candidate, and to either pull it or fuck off.

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

45% of SF voters rejected the Chesa Boudin recall, 46% rejected Brooke Jenkins in favor of John Hamasaki, and 46% voted no on police-unreforming Prop E. The vast majority of SFans who'd consider voting (or volunteering!) for Peskin are in that 45-46%. No cop-hugging Farrell/Lurie backer will swing to Peskin over this. He could be the progressive standard bearer and he's trading that for being a 4th-rate mod.

Fuck it, I told the campaign's contact form how I feel. This probably won't do anything but at least I tried.

I hate it when people say Someone Else Should Do This Thing, cause someone else is never going to do it

But someone should write an op ed about how the reason why driving has gotten so much worse lately is that all the transit cutbacks have lead to a huge increase in the number of people driving in our city, and the only way to fix the problem is by making transit fast and reliable enough that people go back to taking transit

And that future transit cutbacks will make this problem much worse

i'm tired of the word war, is there some book even longer than 'war and peace' that can represent an impossibly huge pile of words?

@pootriarch Yes. There's Rising Up and Rising Down: Some Thoughts on Violence, Freedom, and Urgent Means, a seven-volume, 3,300-page treatise by William T. Vollmann. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Up_and_Rising_Down
