Decent band outside my house for Porchfest, which is great because I do not have the energy to go out lol. I'll rock out with you all in bed :mmikudab: .
Hey #Boston#Cambridge#Somerville#Biketooter! Super last minute offer, but it's a lovely evening out and I'd like to practice my photography skills. Specifically, I'm looking to do portraits of people on bikes.
I'll be at North Point Park from 6:45 to 8 pm tonight, Monday May 6th, with my camera if you'd like some nice quality photos of you and your bike.
Totally free, photos are yours to keep, just find the guy with the camera, satchel, and purple helmet walking around and say hi!
Big news about the proposed demolition of the McGrath Highway in #Somerville. The project had a public hearing last night; here's an overview. Some highlights in a thread below:
Here's a fun story published in 1903 about the rise of automobiles in #SomervilleMA, including a debate over steam vs gasoline (steam was more popular but gasoline car owners were sure they were right). Also included is a comparison of the price of owning a horse. So much has changed, but so little has changed. #history#cars
I’m trying to put up a theatrical show but having trouble finding venues. Does anyone know a theater in the #Boston#Somerville#Cambridge area that meets the following criteria?
When /r/somerville on reddit was asked: "What is the most used #Somerville online forum?" one user wrote the following take:
"As others have noted, facebook tends older and more conservative (the Davis Square group is -legendary- for toxicity), Reddit tends younger and more hyper-online, Mastadon is great if you want to talk exclusively with people who agree with you (not a bad thing, just something to be aware of), Bluesky is still a walled garden, Nextdoor -is- a trash fire, Instagram can't figure out what it wants to be, and nobody uses Threads."
Minor #urbanism rant: I frequently see "our public transit system sucks" as a reason we can't de-prioritize cars. This was said in the #Somerville subreddit today and like...
When people say this they almost always mean rail. Buses also exist and guess what - we can make them better by taking space from cars.
Even if we accept that public transit sucks, bikes also exist. More people can and do ride them than you think. We can also make them better by taking space from cars.
Do any of our readers live near the big empty lot in #Somerville's Gilman Square Green Line station? I'd love to talk with neighbors for a story I'm working on – give me a call at 207-310-0728.
Hey, help a cripple out: how are mobility impaired people supposed to shop for booze?
More specifically wine. Pretty much any other form of alcohol, I know what's out there, I know what I like, and it's a very simple thing for me to wander into a packie, grab something appealing off the shelf, thrust it at my significant other, saying, "Hey, could you check out for me? I'm going to go drop my carcass back in the car", before my ability to walk completely craps out.
Wine, however, seems to be some sort of special category. I never seem to be able to find the same thing twice. I have a little list of things I've enjoyed drinking, that I've never seen a second time. This year was extra special, because not only couldn't I find any of the wines that I've previously enjoyed, the whole damn wine store had disappeared.
So my basic experience of buying wine these days is going someplace I'm unfamiliar with, wandering around lost, gazing at unfamiliar bottles, in rapidly increasing pain.
They are also smart, you can describe what you want and they select the specific item. I've only shopped in the store, but to be able to say "A medium priced white to eat with ___.” and it shows up…sounds really cool. (They sell nice cheeses, too.)
It is absurd to me that you have to re-register to vote in every municipal election.
Anyway, #Somerville#Cambridge#Boston be sure to check your voter registration and re-register because I think today is the last day to do that for the upcoming elections. #SomerPoli#BosPoli
"Hello! It is my life's dream to row a giant pumpkin down the Charles River and I have finally saved up enough money to purchase one, but I just found out from the pumpkin grower that I need a forklift to receive it (as it is 1000 pounds)."
Looking for someone in #boston#cambridge#somerville with a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive to turn old bits into modern bits without having to mail this floppy.
Update:
I need to convert a single DD two sides dos floppy.
I wanna brag and shout out @inliuofjoan and myself (and others!) for the intersection of Franklin and Pearl street in #EastSomerville - the initial pearl street reconstruction plan included no treatments for this intersection which leads to two schools and a corner store. We advocated for a raised crossing, and now that it’s in, driver yield compliance has improved markedly! #safestreets#somerville#infrastrucure#walkablecities
Seen a lot of pictures of bike traffic in #Cambridge/#Somerville lately and it just confirms what I've long believed: Very few people want to drive in the Boston area. Our roads are not set up for car traffic. Give people any viable alternative and they'll take it. Heck the alternative doesn't even have to be all that viable, just look at how many people still take the T.
