Finished my root system experiment. Made by starting with a full thread, splitting into 2, then again into 3. Decided to add a second grey layer under the white to give it some depth. Pretty happy with this. :)

This is an excellent story by alvin chang about the impact of adverse childhood experiences.

After introducing the main character, Alex, the simulation has both a marker and an animation delay to help you keep track of the him throughout the story.

Very nicely done:

Yeah, I figured sth. like that. It was a bit cryptic, leaving room for imagining all sorts of scenarios. I hope you're better now :)

Are you ok, Mike?

Rare that these experiments come out "just right", but I'm really happy with the stitching here. The material keeping me neat. Next, to add another colour and see if i can work around that inner circle... I realise I seem to be accidentally making an elaborate death star, but that wasn't the idea! 😅

Does anyone have any tips for resources that discuss how to 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲? (for dataviz, esp. in D3)

I am interested in creating shapes like leaves, waves, sea shells, bushes, etc. programmatically. I've seen stuff for Illustrator but not for code.

Thanks 🙏

Du Bois Data Visualization Society Challenge - Week 7/10: My recreation of Du Bois' poster no.47, done with D3 & Svelte. Again I tried to recreate it as close to the original as possible, make it responsive and added a pattern fill to match the hand-painted look.

It's my birthday today (🥳) and I got a brilliant A4 press by @pookipresses. I love it. Did a very quick test print of these little particle polaroids and they are already 100% better than doing them by hand. Still need to master inking & pressure, but very promising!!

First of all: Happy birthday Mike! I hope you'll have a lovely day and a great new year in your life ahead!

Second of all: that press looks terrific and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what you'll create with it :)

Bravo, love how you managed to create a feeling of consistency between the layout shifts via transitioning the matching elements.

And it's very cool to see that new generations of judges bring in a new generation of "greatest albums".

I took my side-project too seriously and ended up with the biggest analysis of title drops in movies:

@dominikus

I went through the piece a second time (still amazing) and stumbled across two dead/undefined links in the sentence "movies like E or I", where both movies are "undefined". Just in case you feel like going back into codebase just once more 😜

Oh, I just noticed that the flow chart (?) about the water cycle, etc. is completely gone. Like the stealth labels, but here all the elements are affected.

Other than that, everything looks great in dark-mode! On the main page everything seems to work just fine :)

I published a new blog post that shows some peeks behind the curtain of how I made my "Stories from the night sky" project.

I talk about some challenges in scraping data, matching weird dates, and detecting hover/tap events on very small elements.

Bonus:

  1. I show an I developed that did not make it into the final piece.
  2. And I share the dataset I created from the different Wikipedia-timelines, spanning from 3200 BCE to 2022-12-31.

The light from the travels for years (and years) until it reaches your eyes. This of the night sky shows you for each star what happened on Earth when the light started traveling from the star to you. That way, any star has a story to tell you. You can zoom in, move around and hover all the stars to reveal the historical events they are connected to.

I have also put my first blog post up, where I share some notes on in javascript:
