@becha I was feeling grumpy for having to wake up at 05:15 to catch a train this morning. Thank you for reminding me why I made this wise decision instead of traveling through the night. 😉😆

Yet another draft: ZONEVERSION

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-dnsop-zoneversion/

I actually like the idea of receiving the SOA serial (zone version) in a response. Makes certain debugs easier

shane_kerr,
@shane_kerr@fosstodon.org avatar

@jpmens I wanted a signed SOA returned, which could be used for TTL stretching by caches if allowed by the zone administrator.

For example, if I lookup a record in version X of a zone, then later look up a different record in the same zone and discover that it is still version X, then I can reset the TTL for the first record as if I had just looked it up.

I wish I had all the money to throw at hardware, specifically for Linux testing/development. 😭 I’m super interested in trying out:

@starlabs StarFighter and StarLite
• Steam Deck
• Newest Dell XPSes
• Samsung 27" 5K display (HiDPI on an external display, yes please!)
• Modern powerful ARM laptop

I feel like there is a lot of interesting stuff going on in the hardware land that I don’t get to check out!

shane_kerr,
@shane_kerr@fosstodon.org avatar

@cassidy @starlabs I ordered my StarLite in August 2023. At that time the website said "7-9 weeks shipping time", which I thought was a lot but I'm patient.

Nothing on the web site indicated that the StarLite was not even manufactured yet, and certainly nothing indicating that it was more like 7-9 MONTHS shipping time.

I'm still waiting. It's looking like 10 to 11 months now. It better be fucking awesome.

I'm trying to set up a 3-node k3s cluster with Raspberry Pi's, which seems like it should be possible using only one install command per server:

https://docs.k3s.io/datastore/ha-embedded

However, the k3s instances keep crashing. Has anyone set this up? I feel like I must be missing something simple.

Also, I hate that the recommended way is to run a shell script off the Internet as root, but here we are. Also also, the logs are super spammy, making it hard for a n00b like me to debug.

shane_kerr, to Ansible
@shane_kerr@fosstodon.org avatar

I'm cleaning up problems reported by ansible-lint and am down to a couple of these:

https://ansible.readthedocs.io/projects/lint/rules/no-handler/

The problem that I have is that if I follow the recommendation and convert the tasks to handlers, then the handlers will be very far away in the playbook - way down at the bottom, hundreds of lines later.

I can silence the error, but I guess it is there for a reason.

Am I crazy? Or is the idea that I should be having smaller playbooks or what?

shane_kerr,
@shane_kerr@fosstodon.org avatar

@ascherbaum But that's about when the handler is invoked, right? The definition of the handler will still be far below the task that triggers it, won't it?

When reading a playbook I can follow the declarations, but it is far below then I have to save my position in the file, search for the handler, read it, then move back.

It's like using end notes instead of foot notes, requiring a lot more mental energy.

shane_kerr,
@shane_kerr@fosstodon.org avatar

@ascherbaum Well I basically have a playbook that sets up everything on a metal server in a cluster. So installing packages, configuring email, creating swap, changing from systemd timesync to ntpd and so on. It's a lot of simple things. I guess that I can split it up, but have never had any reason to... until now, and it feels a bit arbitrary. 🤔

Dear New York Times et al,

He was never a successful businessman.

  1. He inherited 400 million dollars and turned that into zero dollars.
  2. He went bankrupt 7 times.
  3. Some of those bankruptcies were casinos, literally a licence to print money which he couldn't manage.
  4. He conned kids with cancer out of money once. That's why he can't run a charity anymore.
  5. The following business ventures no longer exist or are insolvent:
    a. Trump Steaks
    b. Trump University
    c. Trump Mortgage
    d. Trump Vodka
    e. Trump: The Game
    f. Trump Ice

    af. Tour de Trump
    ag. Trump Network
    ah. Trumped!
    ai. Trump Menswear
    aj. Trump Home
    ak. Success by Trump
    al. Trump Hotel Bedding Line
    am. Donald J. Trump Eyeglasses
    an. Donald Trump Regency Lighting
    ao. Select by Trump Coffee
  6. Of the 16 companies that were manufacturing Trump-branded products in 2015, only 2 remain in business less than 10 years later. Neither of those companies are American. One is located in Panama and the other is located in Turkey.

Stop saying "successful businessman". My little company founded in 2014 has been in business longer, employs more people, and makes more income than 99% of his ventures. The difference between him and me is access to capital, which means he gets unlimited bites at the apple, and I get just this one if I'm lucky.

Signed,

    Netflix used to have older Star Trek shows in the Netherlands, until sometime over the last few days. I desperately need these so I can listen to the latest episodes of the Greatest Generation podcast.

    I tried startrek.com but the "where to watch" button only tells me about new Trek shows. Searching for CBS streaming only returns how to use a VPN to pretend to be a client in the USA.

    Proposed new regulation: any household gadget that beeps should be required to encode a device identifier in the beeps, so that a phone app can tell you what is beeping. It took me several minutes today to realize that it was the washing machine cycle being done, rather than someone boosting a post of mine on Mastodon.

    @SteveBellovin This is definitely possible, but I don't think that it requires sounds intended for computer recognition.

    This story about how a bunch of conservative politicians and Fox News hosts (read: climate deniers and fossil fuel boosters) have solar panels on their homes is wild.

    https://wapo.st/3MgKpKv

    shane_kerr,
    @shane_kerr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @davidho The motivation for installing solar panels in this article are either independence or (presumably) financial. It is quite possible to be a climate change denier and still get solar panels.

    It's a pity that the right has made using renewables difficult due to identity politics. But rather than calling it hypocrisy, maybe we should be congratulating anyone who has renewable energy, and using them as examples to encourage other conservatives to stop killing the planet?
