In the US, there are roughly 40,000 traffic deaths per year, compared with less than 2,678 in Japan last year.

To put that in perspective, the US has about 3 times the population, but 15 times the traffic deaths (so, per capita, the traffic fatality rate is about 5 times higher).

To be clear, this is not “omg everything in Japan is perfect!” Rather, the US is failing to address this high rate of death despite known solutions.

@FlockOfCats living in both countries, I can recognize that this is such a complicated issue, comparing them on cars and traffic deaths.

Imagine trying to map the Japanese system onto the US (or vice versa). The result would be completely unworkable.

Both countries have had to make explicit decisions about how to move a bunch of people around every day, and this impacts every level of society, including road safety.

Funny. Every time I go through an airport, I’m struck by all the bullshit we have to do because 3000 people died more than 2 decades ago. However, we won’t accept any inconvenience for something that has killed more than a million Americans.

Making everyone more miserable by taking away older people's “cushy old loans” is not going to make home ownership more tenable for anyone else, but it will work to transfer more of your $$ to banks.

The problem in this article is that fixed rate mortgages don't work to keep people from building new houses. While I agree that there is a lack of housing on the market these are orthogonal issues. If he wants to look into lack of housing stock, he should ask Blackrock.

I made ジャワカレー today with chicken, renkon, carrot, sweet potato, onion, eggplant, and garlic.

I’d never used renkon before, but turned out it is very easy to use!

And the curry was good, though too spicy for Ms. FoC.

Who even knew Jawa ate curry??

It is ridiculous that they seem to have completely washed their hands of any duty of care.

Let me just say that I wish a slightly annoying (though likely chronic) pox on the people responsible for designing the Microsoft Word and Outlook icons for Mac OS.

These two are nigh on indistinguishable in my dock, and not much better when switching between applications.
