Belfast SSE arena now has amazon powered automatic magic till, where you pay a contactless £10 holding fee on the way in, take your drinks and walk out.
Only problem is it charged me a total of £40 for two drinks, instead of £13.80
Honestly not sure how to correct this as I've no receipts and not sure they do either. Have challenged the charge via my bank, will see how that goes. Otherwise it's small claims court I guess.
I wonder how often it makes mistakes, and how many people notice

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@pavsmith right now I don't know if I can get anything. I don't even have an order number

Really, Amazon, one of us is drunk, and I think it is you!

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@revk I quite like my (cheap) Eufy robot vacuum.
Not sure I can imagine the world where I spend £800 on one though!
(yes I'm sure it's faster with better navigation and mapping, but wow, that price tag!)

a couple of hours in... not sure I'm getting it yet, but I'll give it a little longer

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@dalelane I only got a few hours in. Base building just seems too much of a faff I didn't have time for, and exploring was slow and often ended blundering into a way under-leveled shootout I cmhad no chance of winning...
Maybe I gave up too soon?

OK I have to admit this argument for using let over const for most cases in JavaScript/TypeScript almost has me convinced.
I'm sure I'm going to continue to prefer const, but I see the point.
Video argument: https://www.epicweb.dev/talks/let-me-be

sldrant, (edited )
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@claudius @jasoncoon I see the point though, and for me the issue is const doesn't for far enough for objects, as they're still mutable, just not reassignable.
Read only types are often rare, and usually only apply to lists etc (and even then, it's the list, not the object in it), so making the binding const doesn't really do all that much there

My standing charge for electricity is now £190 a year! Before any usage. That's really concerning.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@russss @CenturyAvocado debatable if you tho k a standing charge is fair though. Water for instance would probably be mostly standing charge, to repair all the ancient pipes and leaks, also the insufficient treatment plants. The usage probably would be a minor part of the bill.
Not sure that a low electricity consumer should foot equal bill of grid upgrades as someone using more

I think the main takeaway from the man versus bear debate is that men know even less about bears than they do about women

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@Tattooed_Mummy I mean, how many surveys have found that the average man thinks they can fight a bear, unarmed, and win...

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@Tattooed_Mummy oh yes. Sorry I just meant that the thoughts of an average man seem a pretty low starting point.

I'm trying to figure out the best browser combination for my needs. Generally, Firefox covers almost everything I need, but it's slow on Android and drains a lot of battery. I've tried Vivaldi, Chrome, and Brave. Of these, only Brave has the features I need, like full history sync (not just typed URLs), and the ability to send tabs to other devices. However, with its focus on crypto and AI, it seems too hype-driven for me. Also, none of them work on FreeBSD without using a Linux jail.

Any suggestions?

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@stefano I chose Firefox purely on privacy, especially with ghostery plugin on android

sldrant,

@pavsmith with a temporary fence just gone up at the front, the 4 chickens and one dog are now allowed out there. (hoping the chickens scratch at all the moss with wild abandon... Need more chickens...)

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@pavsmith yeah, the chooks are really amusing to have around too. Though risky to eat lunch near them as they want whatever you have

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@pavsmith ours are fascinated by their humans. One will jump up for a pat, but the other 3 are hard to catch. They def will eat anything, and they love the look of my lunch

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@shezza_t it takes me about 30 or 40m to cut the front, same for the back. If this helps out on the front then it's worthwhile. Now just need the chickens to pull their weight and scratch out all the moss at the front!

I'm not sure what's going on with our local Tesco, but they haven't had radishes in stock since before Easter. All the other salady stuff comes and goes all the time, but radishes and cucumbers used to be the old reliables.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@shezza_t my wife is rather annoyed that tesco hasn't had marshmallows for months. Hot chocolate just isn't as good without nice marshmallows. (tesco has some other brand marshmallows but they just dissolve into nothing)

@shezza_t it does indeed. But marshmallows has been months!

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent have been thinking about this for a bit, 2specially as I got a call a week ago saying it was from my bank and if 750 from an insurance provider was expected. I was ready to tell them if calm them back, but said I don't use "direct line", and they abruptly hung up.

I'd like to think that any call I didn't initiate I'd treat the same, but I do qi der if they'd opened with something like this if it would have caught me out
