AAA Pattern Good!

Writing //Arrange //Act //Assert in EVERY. SINGLE. TEST?

F-Tier.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@david_whitney I've had some tests where writing given/when/then (and a description!) adds a lot of value. For many though, as with AAA just whitespace is plenty as you're saying

watched "3 Body Problem" yesterday. aliens pose an existential threat to earth in 400 years. "the world comes together in an unprecedented alliance" to prepare for their arrival.

casting a sideways glance at the existential threat of climate change. somewhat closer than that.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@pavsmith yeah "don't look up" seems far more realistic as a response

people can be extremely judgmental on people with no kids. or the very quiet and meaningful "oh, is there something wrong...?" nah, you know, the reasons are entirely private and almost certainly not what you think. if you persist i may not be polite.

@pavsmith oh its jealousy, pure and simple. So much time, shittonnes more spare cash. Children may be the future, but they suck all the time and money you have. I love mine dearly, buy dinky has its appeal.

You want to add an SVG image to your website.

Which of the following do you do - and why?

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent separate file can get cached better than any in-lined version, so I'd favour that

Modern software development be like: I wrote 10 lines of code to call an API that calls another API, which calls yet another API that finally turns on a lightbulb. Pray that Cloudflare or AWS will not be down during this operation; otherwise, there will be no light for you.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft it's doesn't have to be... Mine are all local network. I do use a mqtt server, though could do direct http to the lights too.
We've made a choice to make everything cloud connected, because consumers value only price and convenience and manufacturers only look for profit

If you ever want to feel like a real slacker, go read the bio of any astronaut. They are incredibly talented, highly educated, super-people.

I'm listening in to a talk by a current astronaut, and it somehow makes me feel really great that despite him basically having superpowers, he still had a hiccup with his Zoom presentation and had to change some settings mid-presentation.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets yes! I've heard some people have had amazing conversations when the astronauts had nothing to do and were passing overhead. Not sure you get a long conversation though as thwirborbitbis rather fast so you lose line of sight

Oregon governor signs nation’s first right-to-repair bill that bans parts pairing

Starting in 2025, devices can't block repair parts with software pairing checks.

Do UK Driving licences still come in Manual/Automatic?

I assume that passing a test in (most*) EVs would limit you to a Automatic license?

  • I believe there is a Toyota with fake gearbox...
sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@ben pretty sure yes, and yes I'd expect an EV to be classed automatic (possibly even with a Toyota wierd electric gearbox as not sure you can actually stall those)

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@pavsmith @ben makes sense. They also require evidence of N hours driving in different conditions, including rain and night which makes a lot of sense

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@pavsmith @ben yeah, you need a log book now with specific minimum hours of different driving. Means you're a learner for longer as you have to reach that minimum. This may be a good thing though

I was thinking about this article from earlier in the month about having to honour a refund policy made up by its chatbot. No system is perfect, and lots of AI answers on forums etc. without references are dubious (even ignoring whether training data was sourced with adequate consent)
But then I look at social media posts, particular Facebook, and I see nonsense from humans posted there too.
How close are chatbots to the same "truth" hit ratio as humans now?
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/02/air-canada-must-honor-refund-policy-invented-by-airlines-chatbot/

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@tstuefe @sxa I doubt that, journalism has been on a steady downward trend and with profits from papers evaporating I can't see why they'd want to hire more people, never mind qualified ones

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@sxa @tstuefe yes, proper funding for things becomes important.
I struggle with BBC because if their biases, but fixing that and funding then better makes more sense than defining

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@sxa @tstuefe well, no. Pleasing everyone is another of those impossibilities in life.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@Dragon @revk depending on your games, this is very valid... Older games are probably small enough to not be a big deal, but the recent AAA ones are stupidly big
