I hiked up Frary Peak today, which is on Antelope Island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake. About 2000' of elevation gain. That's only twice what I've been doing recently -- but all my practice hikes start at sea level. This started at 4600'. The last few hundred feet were brutally slow going.

A dented metal USC&GS survey marker from 1963
A view across the Great Salt Lake from lower down, earlier in the day. The snow-capped mountains are visible reflected in the water, which is surrounded by a wide band of salt flat.

@attoparsec This is really cool! I've seen it many times but never thought about climbing it. Great pics, too.

@attoparsec btw now we want to know if you sailed there or kayaked, either of which seems fairly likely.

I've been looking to diversify my cooking a bit more but also staying healthy. I think I'm going to have to try to make Chetna's red kidney bean curry called Rajma Masala after watching this video. I have to see if I can find those hot peppers near me. Last time I tried the hot pepper selection was pretty pedestrian.

@hankg We have a multiyear trading program with a friend in new england: he sends exotic apples, we send absolutely radioactive peppers of various types.

I swear on a stack of Campagnolo catalogs THIS HIGH that when I was a kid, Schwinn among others sold bicycle speedometers that used a propeller that the headwind spun to measure your speed on a dial. They clamped on the handlebars.
Does anyone else remember this?

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@guncelawits I've found some vertical axis turbines, but nothing horizontal that's functional. There are a bunch of horizontal toys for bikes from the '50's and '60's, which would match my memory, but they were just propellers, no gauge.

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@moira @guncelawits That is extremely close, and given its manufacturing location, I bet this is what I remember, and I was conflating it with other toys that had propellers.

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@moira @guncelawits hmmm an air pressure based speed indicator rising in price...

smellsofbikes,

I need encouragement & kind support. Feeling like I've let my family down. Fighting off depression monster because it's trying to drag me down. I can't afford to listen to that monster ATM. I don't know what else to do. I've asked for more work/hours to earn more to help my parents out. I'm going to be uploading more of my art for sale all this week. I don't feel my best is enough ATM. I don't know how I'll be able to pay household bills this month when I'm spending over $1000 on respite help.

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@msquebanh you're doing a huge amount. Do you post anything about your art here? I know there are arguments about this but I think artists should be posting pics of what they do and where people can see and buy it.

Y'all, America desperately needs to embrace the metric system.

Fer reals.

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@saramg Legit concern, though: one of my cars is documented in gallons, and the other also in gallons, but one's imperial and one's us gallons. So the idea that there might be yet another weird local ounces, aside from troy and avoirdupois and fluid, is somewhat reasonable.

@dgar I hope I haven't already told you about this. I used to work a job where they unwisely gave me a pricing gun. It was awesome. Set it for $0.02 and run up and start sticking labels on a coworker "this is my two cents worth!" Change it to $0.01 "a penny for your thoughts" grab two, set one to $0.05 and one to $0.10 and apply both rapidly to coworker "hah I'm nickel and diming you to death" after a week they took the pricing guns away again.

This evening I was reminded of the Old River Control Structure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_River_Control_Structure , which I first learned about when I read John McPhee's The Control of Nature.

Somewhere between that and living in a 67 year old house built on a slab on expansive clay soil, I started to realize that geotechnical and hydraulic engineering is everywhere, and most of us never even notice it.

Today's new recipe experiments...

Cashew Crusted Lemon Pepper Tilapia over Lemon-Thyme Brown Rice with a Summer Cucumber Salad

Ingredients

2 Cucumbers
8 oz Sour Cream
2 tbsp Agave Syrup
¼ cup Rice Wine Vinegar
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Pepper

1 cup uncooked brown rice
1½ cups Chicken Stock
1 tbsp Butter
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp ground thyme

1 lb Tilapia Filets
1 tsp Lemon Pepper Seasoning
1 stick Salted Butter, Melted
¼ cup Breadcrumbs
½ cup Cashews (Crushed)

Equipment
Ninja Foodi
Food Processor

Cucumber Salad (Make-Ahead) Instructions
Peel and deseed cucumbers if needed.
Thinly slice cucumbers.
Cover with water and chill 4 hours or more.
Whisk dressing of sour cream, agave, vinegar, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl until dissolved then chill.
Drain cucumbers and squeeze out excess water.
Toss cucumbers in dressing to coat them.
Cover and chill until serving time.

Brown Rice Prep and Cook Instructions
Melt butter at MED-HI heat.
Sauté rice in the butter until browned about 5 minutes.
Mix in stock, lemon juice, and thyme.
Pressure cook 15 minutes on HI.
Natural release for 10 minutes then quick release to stop cooking.
Remove rice and place in a bowl that has a tight lid.
Fluff with salt and pepper to taste if needed.
Cover to keep warm until serving time.

Tilapia Prep Instructions
Crush cashews if needed to desired consistency.
Combine breadcrumbs and crushed cashews.
Whisk lemon pepper seasoning into melted butter.
Line a baking sheet or pan with parchment paper, or spray with cooking spray to prevent the fish from sticking.
Arrange tilapia filets on the baking sheet or pan.
Pour seasoned butter over fish.
Sprinkle breadcrumbs and cashew mix over fish to create a nice even crust on each.

Tilapia Cook Instructions
Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, then switch your oven to the low broil setting for 2-3 minutes to finish the fillets off.

The crust should be a dark golden brown and the fish should flake easily with a fork when it is done. Spoon the butter and cashews remaining in the pan over the fish.

Serve tilapia on a bed of rice with a cucumber salad side. Enjoy!

I’ve lived here for four months, and I just discovered a new light fixture in the kitchen that I had never seen before. It’s not like it’s hidden, it’s right there, it just never turns on and thus never registered. I suspect it might be controlled by one of the light switches that doesn’t seem to do anything, and the bulb has burned out. Will have to experiment later.

It’s good to see at least a few Republicans are starting to see this issue of taking reproductive rights is a loser in every sense, but that doesn't mean this issue is solved or dead, and it certainly isn't dead nationwide.

Republicans will try again and again until:

  • they pass these woman-killing, domineering bills, or
  • they get so soundly defeated, they’ll learn to stop trying.

@SallyStrange @TonyStark yeah, this ignores the third possibility that they'll decide that if they're losing at the ballot box they'll find a way to change either who gets to vote or how those votes are counted, so that they no longer have to pay attention to that.

@moira I had a bike riding friend. We were riding up a steep hill and found a big rattlesnake sunning itself on the edge of the pavement. We didn't want it to get hit, so she pushed at it with the front wheel of her bike to get it to leave and instead it wriggled in amongst the spokes and we were all well NOW what do we do. At least it couldn't strike. I thought, maybe spin the wheel until it gets dizzy? (It didn't fit betwixt fork and wheel)
