For the record this is Mach 19.5 assuming sea level air pressure and standard temperature.

The power requirements for an air resistance of 0.5 and frontal area of about half a square meter are 117 million horsepower to go this speed.
For reference, I can produce 1.2 horsepower for about 4 seconds max on a good day.

A cool video by @breakingtaps about making rolling contact joints for robotics, that allow for very small, mostly single axis compliant, rotational joints that can have cam-like behavior.

[SOLVED, thanks!] Electronics help, please. This is a 48vdc to 12vdc converter. There's nothing to tell me which wire is the 48vdc in, 12vdc out, and the ground. Can anyone tell which is which looking at this circuit? It's Chinese made. Thanks!

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@elaterite I'd need to see the underside of the board but traditionally black is ground (on the back side of the board, it should be attached to a plane) and most likely yellow is the input. Look at the caps right beside the yellow and red wires. I bet the cap beside the yellow is rated for 50V and the one beside the red for more like 25V or less. They should be marked on the side with their rated voltage.

Here in America, there's basically just one hair removal tool that actually uses a real laser that you can buy for home use. And it costs $300.

I just looked on AliExpress, and they have ones for $20. Reviews say they work, and that you can tell because there's a burning hair smell.

I'm pretty tempted to try one.

@MLE_online I've seen tattoo removal lasers on aliexpress that also appear to be fairly burly lasers

    I need this funnel to look less new and shiny for the pitch drop experiment project, so I'm going to attempt to tarnish it with ammonia fumes.

    The downside here is that this ammonia is what I have used to degrease animal bones that I have cleaned, so the smell of it boiling is probably horrendous

    Some ladies keep their white sneakers so flawlessly white and clean.

    Do they buy a new pair as soon as one pair gets the slightest scuff or stain?

    Do they have ten pairs and rotate them to keep them from wearing out quickly?

    Do they spend a half hour each evening carefully cleaning and conditioning their shoes to remove the dirt of the day?

    @smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

    @csnyder @MLE_online I'm married to someone who has approximately 30 pairs of shoes, some of which cost more than some of my bicycles, and she is extremely careful when and where she wears the nice ones. She changes shoes every time we leave, for the right shoes for the expected use and weather. She has shoes that have never been worn outside.

    A good friend just found out that genetic material she stored 5 years ago before starting to transition was destroyed 4 years ago by the company, Legacy, and they kept charging her for storage until they notified her last week about what they'd done, and in the meantime told her that everything was fine and being handled correctly. Just in case any y'all were thinking about this.

    @PandaChronicle @Pineywoozle I see so much of this and feel a certain suspicion that there's a lot of planning and propaganda that went into getting so many people laser focused on one admittedly horrible issue. I'm really upset about it too, but it doesn't change what I see as our immediate future.

    I ended up writing code that I am pretty damn proud of! The original code was really simple, but I've added code to configure the device, which just has a rotary controller with a button...

    When you power it on it will check if you are holding down the button, then go into config mode so you can set the channel and then saves it to EEPROM.

    There's twice as much code now, but it's still pretty minimal...

    (And I though of a way to make it even more versatile as well!)

    smellsofbikes,
    @smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

    @rasterweb writing menu code around a rotary encoder/button is incredibly frustrating and I admire people who do a good job of it.
