Celebrating Alan Rickman

Today’s Doodle celebrates English actor Alan Rickman. With a deep, magnetic voice and endless charm, he’s known for his magical performances in films like Harry Potter and Die Hard. On this day in 1987, Rickman performed in 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses', a Broadway play that was instrumental in launching his career."

If you like Mastodon and would like more people on here, it might be good to think about how to make it friendlier and more welcoming—instead of ranting about other sites.

You sound exactly like the conservatives on Twitter.

@thomasfuchs I might also consider an account on Calckey (as an alternative to Mastodon), which appears to be gaining some traction.

I think that there should be a law stating that you’re only allowed to call a new development XYZ Gardens if at least 50% of the area is covered in actual publicly accessible gardens, with trees and everything. And there should be a second law that at least 50% of all new developments must be named Gardens.

@helenczerski There is a condominium development in Singapore named Forest Woods.

For the life of me, I can't figure out whether the people who named it that can't see the forest for the woods or vice versa. 🙂

For more laughs, imagine living in another Singapore condominitm named The Rafflesia. In real life, is is a regional parasitic plant that blooms into one of the largest flowers in the world that attracts pollinators by smelling like decayed meat.

One nice thing about Singapore. When some public service is broken or unavailable, you can report it using a mobile application and they deal with it rather quickly.

I've used it to report things like broken streetlights. And in one case abtree had fallen across the mountain bike trail in the middle of the forest and they fixed it within days after reporting.

@sohkamyung@mstdn.io avatar

@loke I might have reported 'lost' shopping trolleys and misplaced rental bikes (left in public park areas) using the app in the past. I'm not sure if I saw the Case Details for those: that might be an improvement that would make me start using the app again.

A bit of Singapore may come to Sweden, @loke 🙂

"SINGAPORE – Temasek-owned SMRT and publicly listed ComfortDelGro Corp are vying to operate metro lines in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Swedish capital is expanding its three-line metro network, with extensions as well as a fourth line being built, and these will come into service from 2025."

@gregeganSF Anecdotally, I tense my muscle after the mosquito starts feeding. I think this prevents it from pulling out its proboscis, making it an easier target to smack.

So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.

Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"

Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.

From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."

It's enshitification in action.

I use the OsmAnd app to take waypoint photos (with GPS info) for iNaturalist. These shots don't get uploaded to Google Photos unless I want them to. I usually copy them to my Download folder for later uploading to iNat.

So I could turn off GPS in the Photo app, and keep personal and iNat shots separate.

I tried using the OsmAnd Audio/Video plugin to take shots using the system photo app with Location Info disabled.

Photos I take directly using the photo app have no location info. But looks like location info is still available with shots taken using the OsmAnd plugin.

Maybe you could try OSMTracker. It might use its own camera app to take shots.

On a local condiment that might take some getting used to.

"Sambal belacan is a regular accompaniment to rice in Malay, Eurasian and Peranakan meals. It is made by pounding toasted belacan with chillies and adding calamansi lime juice, salt and sugar to that mixture. While it is popular with many people, its key ingredient, belacan, has a somewhat malodourous reputation."

@btcprox I think the e-gate won't stamp the passport, so I suppose this means a relaxation of the "make sure your passport has a stamp" rule.

This Malay Mail article points out a few requirements (submit digital arrival info beforehand, for example) before the e-gates can be used by Singaporeans.

Interesting. This is a local folklore, similar to Aesop's Fables, that has been translated into 111 languages.

Also in 1983, Lucasfilm (later Pixar) made the first high-resolution computer-generated image that was supposed to be near-photorealistic and "a single-frame movie".

"The Road to Point Reyes" took a month to render.

I think my favourite bird shots from this trip to Perak, Malaysia in March 2019 are these of a pair of Scaly-breasted Munias (Lonchura punctulata) and a juvenile member of the family. They were perched on a tree just outside the garden and allowed me to get closer (about 1.5 metres) to them to take these shots.
