Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have led a study that identified a new species of aetosaur, a type of ancient crocodile, who lived before the emergence of dinosaurs. The newly discovered species is called Garzapelta muelleri, and the scientists have managed to piece together fossil fragments to reconstruct a remarkable 70% of its fossilized dorsal carapace. “Usually, you find very limited material,” one scientist says. Today's animal from Glasgow's architecture is this rather cute little crocodile hiding in the canopy of the drinking fountain at the entrance to Alexandra Park in the east end of the city.
So let me tell you guys a little about this magnificent new crocodile. The species name is 'iylwenpeny' but is pronounced "eel - OON - bin - yah" which looks about as far from the spelling as it is possible to get. It is an Anmatjerre name (an Arandic language from central Australia) and means "skilled at hunting".
