Not to mention this is also bad for video game preservation. Years from now, the servers meant to handle your account creation will probably cease to be, and the games will be unplayable unless someone cracks them. The shortsightedness of this industry never fails to amaze me.
This applies to software in general. Make it run completely from the install disc or package. Then it can stand the test of time.
Of course, industry wants you to simply rent everything and pay them $500 a year, forgetting that if everyone wants that, consumers are going to be unable to afford it.
@flisk That goes without saying. 😅 I mean, what low-level assembly line programmer on a Call of Duty game ever woke up one morning and went, "You know what this game needs? Online authentication for single-player mode!"
Serious question: Can anyone recommend someone in academia who does (or has done) reputable research of transgender representation in media?
I'm hoping to get at least 3-4 people who know their shit and ask them about THAT SECTION in Space Quest IV. I'm interested in historical context, analysis of the subtext, and of course a judgment call on a deceptively simple question: Is SQ4 transphobic?
@sqhistorian 😕Yeah. Sorry. I would have definitely preferred your more optimistic proposal. Games meant a ton to me... I mean... still do.
Like, the transphobia is there, but at least it's not some real blatant anti-trans shit. Like, they could have really played up the "ugly man in a dress" shit, but from the dialogue portrait, and how characters treat Roger afterwards, it all treats him as a woman. Sure, there's the whole idea of gender stereotypes being played to here... but that's a different discussion.
Honestly, the idea that Roger could be trans kinda cracks me up because I grew up wanting to be a janitor because of Space Quest... and here I am... a trans janitor.
Can you recommend me some good POC retro game YouTubers? I would be very interested to see games from my youth — which, let's face it, were not known for their diversity — reviewed through the lens of someone who isn't a pasty white guy with anger issues.
If you fancy your "Doom console comparison video" with a seasoning of dry wit and a soothing Scottish accent, then you can't go wrong with @DavidXNewton's video! https://youtu.be/oRY421ZZyMw
If you like the King's Quest VI soundtrack, you might also like it on vinyl. My mate Erik spent the last two years making a reorchestration of the soundtrack with live instruments and he's crowdfunding a vinyl release now.
Join me in 2 hours for a special video premiere of the AGHN Content Creators podcast. My friends OneShortEye, @danielalbu, @PhantomFellows, and Jack and Josh from Adventure Game Hotspot talk about YOU — our lovely communities!
Oh hey! @PhantomFellows drew these cool pixelated avatars of me in the style of his game ("The Phantom Fellows"). These look really cool — although I'm not sure if the implication is I'm some sort of "hiding in the bushes" kind of flasher, or if it's just a disguise to hide my extra two arms. 😅
Anyway, go check out his game demo and wishlist it on Steam. It's seriously one of the funniest games I've ever played. https://thephantomfellows.com/
This tech could have revolutionized the voice-over industry in the 90's... but instead it was lost to time. Hear Al Lowe talk about Sierra On-Line's secret in-house studio weapon: https://youtu.be/oOZhpcJIyd8
