A Thing has been happening in this corner of the these past couple of days that led to much heated debate.

Depending on who you follow you may or may not be up to speed.

I’m not naming it because I’m not here to reopen the debate. Instead, I observe that although The Thing has not been resolved, I’ve seen people apologise, and some others revise and clarify their position regarding The Thing.

This is how I know we’re building something interesting and special here.

The state of our federation is strong.

Last week the opened our arms to half a million new users. Many of them migrants from another enshitified corporate dumpsterfire. Together we are building out incredible new applications that realize our amazing collaborative federated infrastructure. We are now engaged in open animated exchange about how to safeguard our precious platform while allowing it to grow to its full potential. These are good and vital discussions. We got this.

It shouldn’t be an issue that some admins are taking a strong, pre-emptive stance to whilst others play a waiting game.

The great thing about the Fediverse is that we can decide to move and join an instance that aligns with our own position and values. We should celebrate this flexibility.

The one thing that will serve ’s interest is if we
instead divided ourselves to wage a destructive war of words over its plans.

It would be great if we could avoid that.

FWIW - I despise and its more recent metastasis. Reasons include but are not limited to facilitating genocide and helping fascists get elected.

I left that platform over a decade ago for these reasons.

And it may turn out that is the only option.

But I’m not quite there yet, and I’m interested in learning about what other plays might be available to use a small window of opportunity to turn this move against them (cont’d)

I don’t think we should be dogmatic or naive though. Every move we make must be predicated on their history of not being trustworthy.

@GrahamDowns yep - and in the meantime we work to make those migration tools even better.

I think there is always the risk that this may end up being futile, but blocking and defederating will remain an option at any given point, so worth a try I reckon.

It's really quite easy to migrate to a different instance.

Just moved from mastodon.social to indieweb.social and it took minutes to export and import my follows, blocks, bookmarks and mutes.

And then a few minutes more to set up an alias to retain my followers.

It's not yet possible to migrate old posts of course, but this has never been an issue for me since I regularly archive posts anyway as I don't need my interactions here to be permanent.

I still follow a relatively small number of people here but I’m already getting more value out of this network than I got out of late stage .

Curation takes time & is ongoing, but I love the range I get from the : from people with quirky niche interests to - increasingly - real-time updates on global issues.

A network needs critical mass, but it doesn’t have to contain half the world’s population in order to be valuable. We should free ourselves from such hype.

With news of the probable launch of Meta's I wanted to make clear this servers policy:

"Don't preemptively strike meta w/ a fediblock, but stay vigilant with eyes wide open and a finger on the block button."

The same as we do for all servers.

They can be blocked instantly if they violate our terms of use, and as admins are in a far stronger position if we do so than vs before.

I hope all to consider taking this same policy. 1 of X 🧵

@tchambers @erlend decided coincidentally and for other reasons to migrate to Indieweb recently, and seeing these takes makes me happy with that decision. It's a sensible approach.
