So I have a mechanical keyboard, a cherry brown one I've been using for like 5+ years every day. For a long time I've been annoyed at the sound it makes, but convinced myself that it didn't make sense to fix because in order to lubricate the switches, I would need to de-solder the switches from the board.

Well as it turns out, that isn't true. If you have a cherry red, brown or blue that is nice but you really want that super smooth feeling of a more premium switch, you can absolutely lubricate it. All I did was depress the switch, put the smallest amount of Super Lube Synthetic Oil on a size 0 brush and then brush the sides of the cherry browns. I repeated this for all the switches.

After a week, it's like a new, much more expensive keyboard. It sounds totally different, more similar to the far more expensive keyboards that my coworkers have. I haven't had any reliability issues and the cost to do it was less than $10. Strongly recommend.

Can someone who understands activity pub fill me in on the whole Threads posting to Mastodon thing? Mosseri (IG CEO) said that soon Threads users would be able to post to Mastodon. Will I be able to cross post my Threads posts to this Mastodon profile? Or do I have to set up a second Mostodon profile for my Threads cross posts? I'm confused how this whole thing will work

stevenodb,
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz IF Meta connects Threads with Mastodon (metaverse federation) it should be just like any mastodon server you see on here (@mastodon.social, etc) and will become something like zuck@threads.net. If you want to end up with only one account, itโ€™s best to pick one and ask users to switch over (follow other account).

Geeeeeee, so rclone syncing into an encrypted remote can make file names so long that they exceed the file system's limit! The original isn't even that long.

Naturally, I checked file systems on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems#Limits

I wasn't aware that 255 characters is so widespread. Even is limited that way.

Reiserfs is truly something else.

YouTube saves the day again. My dishwasher wouldnโ€™t drain properly. The manual says nothing about how to clean it out. One YouTube search later, I found a 5-minute video that showed me exactly what to do. Dishwasher works great now.

Free apps are going to be massively, disproportionately affected by Appleโ€™s Core Technology Fee, which is why I don't think it will stand as-is.

If you have just 2M users on a completely free app, you're looking at $45,290 in monthly fees to Apple, or half a million dollars a year.

To make use of any of Apple's other EU terms or fees as a developer, you have to accept this one

stevenodb,
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @viticci Thereโ€™s no good reason to switch payment plans for free apps. The new plan is created from the view of enabling third party app stores.

I recently got back into playing Tears of the Kingdom and thereโ€™s absolutely no question anymore, this was my 2023 game of the year.

RE4 remake was spectacular and Baldurโ€™s Gate 3 is a special game, TotK resonates perfectly with me and itโ€™s simply a breathtaking achievement.

@matt The only Zelda game I have given up on. Somethingโ€™s turning me off about it. It might be that itโ€™s too familiar to the previous one and somehow feels empty and boring. It feels like a broken mod to me. Nintendoโ€™s underpowered hardware is not aging well. This world design was barely acceptable in 2017.

    Ben Smith was a VP at Amazon Prime Video until early 2023. Despite my disagreement with his claim that 80+ hour weeks back in the 2000s were great, actually, and the way he refers to women as โ€œfemalesโ€ (cringe), he does articulate well why โ€œhybridโ€ is a losing strategy.

    โ€œCompanies need to either be in the office 5(+) days a week or at โ€œhomeโ€ 5(+) days a week. And I think the right side of history is the latter. The opportunity is to completely reinvent the rhythm of work where there is no central office - where people come together for intensely collaborative activities on a regular schedule (3 days a quarter?), where we find new ways to mentor early career staff, where senior managers are ok trading of short-term productivity for long-term productivity, where employees travel for in-person collaborative time organically.

    โ€œMea culpa for advocating a compromise that really was "deciding to lose" and not having been a voice for leaning into the future.โ€

    @drahardja My 2 cents. Being remote adds friction. Friction reduces collaboration. Less collaboration has an impact on the quality of the work. Unless your job is mainly a solitary one (which often isnโ€™t the case in IT).

    Itโ€™s not impossible to work well together remotely but it demands exceptional professionalism and being more extravert than the average person in my industry (software engineering).

    Not talking about productivity here, but quality of the work. Which are very different things.

    How to establish a Martian calendar?

    Here is the Sol Date, as described by Michael Allison and Robert Schmunk, of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (link in the end). In principle, the could be used as a coherent sol-date reference for a variety of Mars missions and observations.

    The "Mars Sol Date" (MSD), as defined by AM2000, represents a sequential count of Mars solar days elapsed since 1873 December 29 at approximately Greenwich noon (Julian Date 2405522.0). This
