"The clock is ticking for Tiktok in the US with the government giving the social media giant a deadline to sell its US operations."

, 2024

https://interactives.stuff.co.nz/newsable/

The US government wants to make sure only they can use DataFarming platforms to spy on and influence US citizens. They're following the example set by the CCP, which has been blocking foreign-owned platforms for years, for similar reasons.

If the US builds its own digital great wall, what else might it block beyond TikTak?

This whole story is another example of what I mentioned here;

> I for one, would prefer that our own national security aparatus spy on us rather than the CCP

Really? I'd rather ours spy on the CCP than on us ; )

Seriously though, I think what the comparison tells us is that the datafarming apparatus is an existential threat to democracy. If we don't want our political systems to become more like China's, we need to rapidly disassemble those apparatus. Not tinker with their ownership.

"My hunch is that the involvement of political parties in enacting laws to regulate medical practice is likely to fuel partisan animosity: greater discrimination against trans people on the one hand, and greater uncritical affirmation of hormones and surgery for trans-identified youth on the other... if health agencies act according to professional norms and standards to prevent harm to children, there will be less reason for hostility on either side."

"I began this post with the (now laughable) intent of offering a few brief comments on Marc Andreessen’s Techno-Optimist Manifesto published in October of last year...

I would frame the manifesto as a revivalist sermon, or more specifically perhaps, a jeremiad, calling for repentance and a return to the religion of technology. Such a sermon is a response to the process of secularization, which has accelerated in the last decade."

"When secularization comes for the religion of technology, you may also expect to see the rise of reformers calling for changes within the parameters of the religion. When technologists find themselves repenting of their previous work and calling for more ethical technology, you are dealing with a reform movement within the tradition. For what it’s worth, Andreessen’s sermon may also be characterized as a counter-reformation tract."

As I've mentioned before, there was a time when traditional newspapers being outcompeted into oblivion by network media would have seemed like good news to me. But that was when most network media were community-controlled and non-commercial. Locally-based, commercial outlets being driven out of business by corporate-owned propaganda machines, masquerading as neutral 'social media' platforms, was not the outcome I was hoping for.

As others have pointed out, in social media - like the fediverse - what people see is determined by what accounts they subscribed to (or "follow"), and what the people operating those accounts are posting. A platform stops being social media the moment the visibility of posts is determined instead by recommendation algorithms. At which point they become recommendation media.

strypey,
@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

I definitely want to see social media replace recommendation media as the dominant form in network media. But I've come to believe there's also a place for media where we can consistently find the work of professional journalists. Which means we need, as societies, secure sources of funding for entities that employ and support fulltime journalist.

The big questions we urgently need to answer, are how do we pay for that, and - closely related - how do they secure editorial independence?

It would be useful to see journalists collecting clips of the claims and promises made by politicians during an election campaign, then comparing that against what they're saying and doing in government or opposition, 3-6 months into the new term. I mean literally putting the before clip next to the after clip, so people can decide for ourselves how consistent they are.

> I think the Daily Show used to show "dueling politicians" clips where the same politician is edited having a debate with themself

Jon Stewart's Daily Show was great. But when comedians end up as the only ones doing things like this, it's a sign that political journalists are not doing their job properly.

"There was a desire - even on the part of some liberals - to call for the state to be even tougher in imposing lockdowns, in enforcing vaccines... [The left were] reluctant to talk about the question of policing during the pandemic, because it seemed like this would play into the conservative anti-lockdown movement but... it was a mistake really for the left or for liberals to not take up those issues."

"The WHO was completely marginal in the international response to COVID. What you have instead is what are called multi-stakeholder bodies. These are not part of the UN. They're essentially just bodies that are set up by corporations, which masquerade as being motivated and organised by... some kind of concern for equity in, for example, the distribution of vaccines ... so they provide a kind of buffer against criticism of the drug companies."

"Public money... is given to drug companies to fund their research on developing vaccines... Moderna received US$10 billion... to develop their COVID19 vaccine. Plus, governments pay the drug companies in advance to lock in sales of the vaccine, even before it's been developed, and those aren't dependent on the success of the vaccine. So... the drug companies are basically operating risk-free... Moderna made a 66% net profit on its vaccine."
