OK, some pedant might argue it's now Saturday morning, but I maintain this it's Friday night until the sun comes up ; )

I usually miss the , but this week's theme - - is just to juicy to ignore. I could post hundreds of songs on this theme, but I've narrowed it down to 10. With a focus on songs by kiwis, and artists not posted by anyone else yet.

Zoom is a proprietary service. You can't download the Zoom software, set up your own Zoom server and host a Zoom conference. Their software is theirs. Yet they use dozens of software packages developed by the Free Software community to run their service:

They value Open Source, because it saves them money, but not the software freedoms of their users.

"We can reverse the enshittification of the internet. We can halt the creeping enshittification of every digital device.

We can build a better, enshittification-resistant digital nervous system, one that is fit to coordinate the mass movements we will need to fight fascism, end genocide, and save our planet and our species."

"I think if you go back to the 1980s or 90s you don't actually hear about militaries... talking about information as a 'space' that they need to dominate. It's much more considered a kind of tool, or... even a weapon, but not up there with air, sea, land and space itself as a theatre of war."

Hi @grafcube, I saw your intro on matrix where you mentioned ;

This is an intriguing project. Reminds me of an idea I made some notes on a few years ago for using Git as the back-end for a decentralised policy collaboration platform.

Are you familiar with the extensions to AP, for federating software forges?

is a cool piece of software. Think of it as a web version of those giant rolls of paper people use for brainstorming sessions at social centres. Each roll of paper, or 'pad', is easily accessible to anyone who has a link to it.

It's Free Code, and I use community-hosted versions of it all the time (thanks to Disroot, RiseUp, and others).

However, one problem I see with the (Human eXperience) of EtherPad is...

Two simple way to reduce the likelihood of semiconductor shortages and reduce the volume of e-waste we have to deal with.

  1. Oblige vendors to guarantee N years of useful life for electronic goods, and advertise price-per-year of life alongside purchase price. This could reduce the wastage of semiconductors in disposable electronics, and help people avoid being ripped off by the designer landfill that's misleadingly marketed as being cheaper.

> real estate, stocks, foreign currency, precious metals

All denominated in US dollars as the unit of account, all subject to inflation. Inflation affects the wealthiest much more than anyone else.

Which is why raising interest rates, to control inflation, is the one government intervention in the economy that's always been acceptable under the neoliberal monetary policy.

Government bad. Regulation bad. Unless it's government regulation to keep inflation down.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get LibreJS and NoScript to play nicely together? What I'd like is for NoScript to automatically trust JS from any domains that LibreJS confirms as Free Code.

Anyone remember a game called DownFall? It was sold under the name of Milton Bradley, inventor of The Game of Life. Although by the mid-1980s was just a brand name of Hasbro.

Anyway, it involved dropping plastic tokens through a series of plastic cogs, which players took turns to operate. Hoping each time that their moves would allow their tokens to drop, but not the opponent's:

"Distrust of the intellectual world has always been a symptom of Ur-Fascism, from Goering’s alleged statement (“When I hear talk of culture I reach for my gun”) to the frequent use of such expressions as “degenerate intellectuals,” “eggheads,” “effete snobs,” “universities are a nest of reds.” The official Fascist intellectuals were mainly engaged in attacking modern culture and the liberal intelligentsia for having betrayed traditional values."

One of the few good things about MTV was the Unplugged specials, in which a range of artists performed live with only acoustic instruments. It was an infallable acid test for which bands had real talent for songwriting and performance, and which ones only got famous thanks to big budget studio production.

The US government wants to make sure only they can use DataFarming platforms to spy on and influence US citizens. They're following the example set by the CCP, which has been blocking foreign-owned platforms for years, for similar reasons.

Finally got myself a again. It's a horrid little toy, not the sort of thing I was hoping to find. But it was the only one I've been able to find in a shop that isn't locked to a cell provider (which is obviously anti-competitive and probably needs to be struck down as an antitrust violation).

But it opens up the possibility of going back to a no WiFi in the bedroom policy. While still having an alarm, reminders about critical appointments, and the ability to receive calls and texts.

This year marks the 40 year anniversary of the Labour government that made market fundamentalism and austerity policy the dominant paradigm of the NZ Parliament. This neoliberal coup was continued by the National government of the early 1990s.

It amazes me how few people in Aotearoa today seem to understand what the country was like in 1984, and what's changed since then. Anyone keen to help put together a factual and non-partisan website about this?

Disroot.org are using it as the default UI for their Akkoma instance.

Does anyone else get annoyed by living with people who bang on about personal responsibility being the fix for everything, and how everyone just needs to be responsible like them...

... then chuck food waste and into the landfill bin, when there's recycling and green waste bins right there next to it!

Kerbside collection means they don't even have to take personal responsibility for composting or taking stuff to a recycling centre. But they still can't separate their waste.
