We've been trying to decide what to do with our larger field. I think we have a plan, now.

@kev I know I’ve said it before, but seeing the beautiful views of your fields / house constantly reminds me of some of the more classic properties on “Escape to the Country” 😛

NearlyFreeSpeech.net does a decent job explaining how to setup through shell access, but some minor points are overlooked.

I added an entry to my wiki for those interested:

"Installing WordPress on NearlyFreeSpeech"

I played and beat the original Demon's Souls on PS3 years back. Now I've completed and obtained Platinum for the PS5 version.

For anyone else looking for a step-by-step guide to the Platinum trophy as well, I made a simpler version of the existing "checklist" website:

https://demons-souls-platinum.netlify.app/

(My version is ~30KB while the original web page was over 3.5MB 😬 )

Wrote a quick write up with wiki-links on how to setup a core OpenBSD system and then install DWM on top:

"OpenBSD is a Cozy Operating System"

@iaintshootinmis As mentioned, a good deal of packages are built by the devs themselves, but I think if you're looking for test drive into BSD, maybe look at FreeBSD first? (I know that is odd since I phrase OpenBSD so much 😛 )

Have you ever thought about blogging anonymously? I blog under my real name, but wonder if that could have held me back...

@kev Funny, I launched a mini site a while back about blogging anonymously (which is still very difficult)

Hey @tdarb I’m having issues accessing your new feed.

tdarb,
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev That is concerning...

Both the index.rss and index.atom work for me in NetNewsWire - but that doesn't account for other feed readers 🤔

In other, non-tech news:

I had my appendix removed last night. If you ever have stomach pain that eventually moves to your right side - don’t ignore it or try to “sleep it off” like I did 😛

As a few people may have noticed, I've added myself on another instance here:

https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@bt

I will still use Fosstodon but it will mainly be used for personal quips and odd discussions.

My main "BSD" instance will be where I will focus on open source projects and BSD/Linux stuff (shocker!). Feel free to follow/reach out on that instance if that interests you.

Again, I'm not leaving Fosstodon 😃 - too many awesome people here!

How many folk have if any have switched from Linux to BSD and if you have please tell me why and what you prefer over the former ?

@JustineSmithies

My personal reasoning for slowly switching all my devices over to OpenBSD is cohesion. It’s an entire operating system in one, as opposed to a kernel base with GNU on top. The file system is organized in a way that satisfies my OCD and truly everything “just works”.

It certainly isn’t for everyone and GNU/Linux is still awesome. I will always advocate for using whatever works best for your own use case. That said, OpenBSD is peak OS 😛

How are others handling suspend/resume when using on desktop?

I’m running DWM on my M73 Tiny. Running ‘zzz’ works for suspending but then fails to allow resume.

tdarb,
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

@jeanmimi I will 100% - just want to confirm it isn’t foolishness on my part before annoying devs/community with a “bug”

tdarb,
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

@jeanmimi It is enabled (and started). Running ‘zzz’ suspends the desktop but then nothing can wake the device. It requires a manual reboot

tdarb,
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

@jeanmimi I knew it! It was something foolish on my end.

I was booting into a second (identical) SSD which was connected via USB3. Sleep and resume on the internal SATA disk works perfectly.

😅

Made some very minor updates to my open-suck installer:

  • now based off latest 7.4 (although I am still on 7.3 personally)
  • qutebrowser as default
  • replaced terminus font with JetBrains Mono
  • Updated screenshot :P

My X260 was running the most recent Ubuntu but I was running into some hitching and lag with the UI.

Moved over to Debian 12 (running Gnome) for a few days and it has been smooth since. Odd...

tdarb, to random
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

Making further tweaks to my setup on the X220.

  • Removed the status bar completely
  • Moved away from xbacklight to display.brightness
  • qutebrowser as main browser with visuals to match the rest of the system (terminus font etc.)

Maybe I’ve gone too minimal? 😛

I will most likely port all these changes directly into the Open Suck installer https://git.sr.ht/~bt/open-suck

tdarb,
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

@starbreaker I was toying with that idea, but I never looked into how much tweaking I’d need to do to match my dwm muscle memory

tdarb,
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

@graves501 Yes 👍

tdarb,
@tdarb@fosstodon.org avatar

@starbreaker I was just playing with doing exactly this. Might be an interesting experiment to try getting as close to dwm setup but with only core OpenBSD pkgs

At the end of my guide to setting up a simple website, I will recommend a few stylesheets. Two that I will be including are readable.css (https://codeberg.org/Freedom-to-Write/readable.css) by @amin and simple.css (https://simplecss.org) I'd like to add one or two more. Any suggestions?

tdarb,

@nantucketebooks Maybe my old Vanilla CSS? https://vanillacss.com/ (Pretty sure it ticks all those requirements)
