The occupational therapist I'm seeing to help with CrankyBod crap recommended I try out guided meditations for sleep, so I googled one just now ... and after 10 seconds of Typical NewAgey Voice monotoning on and on about gliding down a river over a bad ambient-ish drone, I had to shut it off. Is there any such thing as a non-corny non-cringy guided meditation tape? 😅

thecrushedviolet,
@thecrushedviolet@mstdn.games avatar

@dkozlov I'm also very particular about the voices but found several meditations and 'sleep casts' on Headspace that I enjoy.

Calm is almost solely what I call "yoga voice" and I can't listen to hardly anything there.

I've reached that point in gratitude journaling (15 days) where coming up with nice things is kind of a chore and making me feel worse.

I tried to Google if this was a common thing, and all I got was "journaling alone will not cure your depression, better not even try" articles.

I'm curious what makes people so angry about cooking and recipes.

Not the SEO algorithm click bait aspect of food creators, literally just recipes "using complicated language" and "taking too long."

I've just never seen anyone get so worked up about any other skill or hobby being complicated or using its own (centuries-old) terminology.

(Friendly reminder that devaluing the free labor of a group made largely of women in the form of "haha food bloggers talk too much" is an immediate block.)

thecrushedviolet,
@thecrushedviolet@mstdn.games avatar

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds The SEO nonsense is the biggest problem with recipes, currently, and it's really unfortunate that the bloggers simultaneously have to use it to be found and also take the heat for how infuriating it is.

Basically every suggestion I got for making recipes easier to understand recently had to be answered with "that is actually impossible with the way things currently work but I agree that it sucks."

thecrushedviolet,
@thecrushedviolet@mstdn.games avatar

@PatrickoftheG @WanderingInDigitalWorlds I wish cookbooks would make a comeback. A physical object seems to make people understand that recipes and photos are a human's time and talent.

Like I know they still exist, but I don't even remember the last time I bought one, and most of my bookshelf is food.

thecrushedviolet,
@thecrushedviolet@mstdn.games avatar

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Step by step photos showing what every step is supposed to look like is one of the most common suggestions I got, and somewhat ironically, the same people who like to make fun of blogs are the ones who hate those pictures because "they know what onions look like."

Absolutely no winning.

No color is as openly hated as pink.

At summer camp we made "potholders" from plastic beads. Each kit had white beads an another color: black, blue, green, yellow, orange... & pink.

I remember a boy picking up a pink kit, then looking more closely, he wretched in disgust. "Eugh! It's pink!" he shouted, violently tossing the kit back into the basket as if it were laced with maggots. The derision he put on that word "pink" was enough to make me avoid taking a pink one myself. 1/

@thecrushedviolet@mstdn.games avatar

@futurebird I remember having this rant in my early 20s about web design and personal blogs. It was a thing to debut your new layout that you'd made yourself. Every last pink design got feedback in the form of "I hate pink, but..."

No color, no niche interest, no fandom got the immediate negative opinions that pink did.

I just saw a sport drink labeled "3x the electrolytes!"

Talk about missing the point. The idea of a drink with some salts and vitamins to replenish you after sweating isn't totally crazy, although most of our diets have too much salt, the idea of a carefully balanced, tasty drink for after a sweaty run ... made a little sense at least.

You'd be paying for them to put in a little salt and potassium but not too much since then...

Clearly I'm overthinking this. More is better drink seawater.

@futurebird Nutrition marketing is one of my huge pet peeves. It's just so predatory to the average person's understanding of the subject, which is already low because of predatory marketing.

Was messing around with the Steam profile showcases and apparently my rarest achievements are all from parks and other natural resources in

That... makes sense. I've been saying my litmus test for whether or not I'll like a game is whether I can plant flowers.

But also only 0.6% players have made an entire nature reserve? That feels unlikely.

How do people go through life not knowing what weevils are? I was talking about ants to a teacher the other day and mentioned something about weevils & they were like "what are weevils?"

"Like beetles but with the long snoot to drill acorns and trees."

"drill acorns!?"

"That's how they end up hollow"

"oh."

"That's how acorn ants have a place to live!"

"oh. I didn't know so much was going on in acorns."

"That's not even the tip of the iceberg!"

I'm astonished.

Musing today: How many team building exercises are inclusive to people? I am both trainer and participant in many of them, and this is an ongoing question.

Share your experiences if you would like?

(E.g. "stare into people's eyes for long minutes and their read their nonverbal cues to complete this exercise successfully..." etc.)

thecrushedviolet,
@thecrushedviolet@mstdn.games avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy The only one I've ever really enjoyed (not hated) was a list of questions you could choose from to answer.

Favorite movie, the last book you read, your family or pets, your plans for the weekend, or strictly about your experience and goals for the topic of the class/meeting.

It seemed to make most people comfortable enough to give a "real" answer, and I felt like I learned more about people just from the question they chose to answer than a lot of other icebreakers.

I feel like people forget you can cook fruit. Craving apple pie but don't want to go all out?

Lightly seer some peach slices in a little butter. Serve with your oatmeal. So fancy and yummy.

Is your curry boring? Do the same thing!

Put a little cooked fruit on it for a good time.
