Fedizens of San Francisco. Music Venue recommendations please.
I'm going to be in the city with work for a week from next Friday and would be interested if anyone could recommend places within walking distance of central SF where I could listen to electronic / alternative music in the evening.

Ola comrades!

It's tomorrow. I have nothing new to promote, but if you want to post a link here to your stuff, I'll happily boost it.
I think it's always useful to add a short description as well so people can judge if it might be of interest or not.

The listening party for Mauerfall by Dead Agent ( @funkatron) is this evening.

It's an album of remixes and deconstructions by a diverse range of artists, including yours truly.

If you are around, come join in the fun.

Okay then - who has music they want to promote for tomorrow?
Please reply with a few lines description (so people get a sense if it's for them or not) and a link so we can get some boosting going on. ❤️

Now that is firmly in the rear view mirror, I wanted to share 'standing with damage' again.

I'd say it's

Others have described it as and

The band The Album Leaf have also been mentioned as a reference point, which I can see.

Also, it's free, so, you know, why not!

If you like new then you should really listen to @radiofreefedi
3 channels of music 24/7 - all from independent artists who call the Fediverse home.

My favourite way to listen is using the super easy and straightforward TuneFM app on my Android phone.

What's your favourite way to listen?

@thisoccasionalsociety@ravenation.club avatar

1/ It's been a busy work day for me so although I've tried my best to boost other Fedi artists, I haven't really had the bandwidth to type up some personal recommendations for stuff to check out on this and I'm really tired so I'm going to limit myself to just these two before bed.

I heard them both on @radiofreefedi today - proof, were it needed, that time listening to is well spent

2/ Can't catch Polly by @SharonMurphyMusic really jumped out at me. I'd describe it as maybe alt-folk? It put me in mind of Oxn, which, given they dropped one of my favourite albums of last year, is a high compliment. https://sharonmurphymusic.bandcamp.com/track/cant-catch-polly

thisoccasionalsociety,
@thisoccasionalsociety@ravenation.club avatar

3/ I had another of those moments where you go "whoah, this is good stuff - what's this then?" and glance my phone and then "ah yeah, of course it's @shannoncurtis!"
Unfortunately I didn't catch the track title, but honestly, if you like high quality synth pop you can comfortably pick any track and you'll love it.

PS if you're a lurking researcher for a music sync rights company, hunting tracks for a Netflix series flicking between now and the 80s, use Shannon for the soundtrack - 100% win

Happy !

This is the first one there's been where I have something to new to release since I joined the Fediverse.

I've made it free / Pay what you want.

I would say it's downbeat, glitchy, filmic, instrumental,

I hope you like it.

It is on 2 February and I will have a new track out!
I'm very pleased about this.
In the meantime if you like that has been described as melancholy and filmic then please give me a listen and a follow on

@mxtthxw not sure on that one but reminds me of a friend who used to ask people what song would be the first tune they'd put on the sound system at a hypothetical old people's home to give the other residents a clear idea what you were like.

It always made me ponder on the interesting ways the notion of 'old age' will change in the relatively near future.

@mxtthxw based on taking Kid_I (at their request) to that auction exhibition last summer, I'd suggest "buy knick knacks".
To quote a woman beside me as we gazed upon a collection of tiny elephants that looked like they'd come out of a cracker "as well as all his posh stuff, he clearly liked buying bits of old tat off the market, didn't he"

Disappointed to read that the brilliant Werra Foxma Records label is ceasing for the foreseeable future, but as they said, keen to focus on the great stuff they did rather than be all miserable. In that vein, they are having a closing down sale with CDs and vinyl by some great acts at heavily discounted prices.
    Treat yourself!
Looking forward to seeing what they do next, applying everything they've learned - I bet it'll be great. https://werrafoxmarecords.bandcamp.com/merch

Shout out to all those working over this holiday period.
    They will be predominantly:

    • Female
    • Younger
    • In low paid jobs
    • Not given a choice about whether to work or not
    • Dealing with an above average number of absolute arses who think they have a divine right to be dickheads just 'cos they are not having a totally brilliant time at the very moment.

I am eternally grateful to these workers - the world would grind to a halt without them.

I gave up drinking over a year ago and I don't really miss it but tonight I'm at an annual event that I've been coming to for years and it's definitely a whole lot less tolerable sober.

This in depth BBC documentary series about disco is great! Proper in depth look at the politics that were central to its creation and to the kick back against it as well as celebrating the music.
With the hindsight of history, I think there is a reasonable case to be made that the birth of disco was way more anti establishment than punk.
    Treat yourself.

Chuffed to bits to be nominated for this, even if the imposter syndrome in me keeps whispering I'm making the numbers up. 😉😆

I know I've mentioned this before but, as I suspect it will show up in 'Best TV of the Year' polls, this is another shout out for 'Once upon a time in Northern Ireland' on BBC. A truly monumental body of work.
I've been reflecting, where ever you live, in our increasingly divided times, I think it can teach everyone powerful lessons that can be applied to how we all deal with people we see as 'on the other side' in our lives.

What songs do you think are too good for their subject matter, like a song for an ad that's actually good, or a children's show theme song that slaps, ect?

    thisoccasionalsociety,
    @thisoccasionalsociety@ravenation.club avatar

@RickiTarr ooohhh I like this question.

    1. Nanny in Manhattan - The Lilys - was in a Levis advert a million years ago but still a great slice of retro pop today.
    2. as a child I remember a Sunday morning political debate programme called Weekend World being the dullest thing I'd ever come across, except the theme was amazing - years later I discovered it was Nantucket Sleigh Ride by Mountain.

I am really loving the new Andre 3000 album. So unexpected. I'd imagine a lot of people aren't liking it but I think it's wonderful to hear an artist follow their heart and take a total left turn. Especially when it sounds like this. Right up my strasse.
