March 16, 2024- “I have spent hundreds of hours in the microscope looking at the worst viruses can do to the brain, including the Zika virus, HIV, Flu, and others. I've never seen the type of damage SARS-CoV-2 leaves behind after infection with other viruses.” - Danielle Beckman, Neuroscientist specialized in high- res microscopy. @dnavinci @Nonya_Bidniss @Brad I would have expected quite a lot of things that were evident 4 (or more) years ago to be plastered on every front page..

@GeorgiaOnMyMind @Brad tbh, feels like April 2020 hasn't even happened yet. Studies are often released on the web ahead of the distribution of the edition of the journal they're published in 👍

I’m really enjoying the new justification developing for “meh, you’ll all die anyway”

old version: precautions are imperfect, so no covid precautions, most infections don’t result in death or disability, therefore mild, and long covid might be serious but there’s no fix, so best just not to determine whether symptoms are related, and not everyone gets it anyway, like 1/20 to 1/5 each infection, at least the first time they get covid, and since no one else is treating this seriously, it must not be serious and you can’t avoid it forever so why try to avoid it at all, sure it’s cumulative damage but if i really thought about this maybe i’d have to wear a mask and that’s uncomfortable, so clearly i shouldn’t, and since i shouldn’t, it must be over, and everyone must be having all these clots due to learning loss, amen.

new version: other viruses have post-viral syndromes associated, and since we didn’t do anything about that before we understood it, even though lots of people did and said avoid infection and everything is airborne, that doesn’t count because i didn’t learn that as a kid, and my doctor doesn’t know it because if they did they’d be embarrassed to wear a mask, so therefore it must be wrong, and maybe some pointy headed nerd knows how to avoid this but i don’t, except with the simple cheap interventions being suggested, that would reduce viral spread overall and therefore post viral syndromes, but the people suggesting all this sound crazy because they’re wearing masks and the cdc doesn’t say it’s an issue, and surely they’d say something if there was something, and so the crazy mask people must not know what they’re talking about, so maybe this IS just the flu and even if the flu also disables people, it would be super depressing to think of all the infections i could’ve avoided in the past, so post viral syndromes are just part of life, and it’s all the same and see we told you it was just something to live with and get used to, and life is risk and what are you gonna do, just never leave the house?, so probably best to go ahead and get it because covid isn’t unique

@mastobit @hannu_ikonen yep, it's bad news, especially since bsl2 doesn't require protection against bioaerosols. More proof that as long as it doesn't kill you in the acute phase, it's nbd. A pandemic of shortsightedness.

Long Covid is happening at a higher rate than is being reported. If LC only involved 1 per cent of the population then I could see them not doing much, but the numbers are between 10 and 20% and it's more than enough to disrupt the workforce as well as put a strain on our health resources, not to mention people's mental health. Also there is enough research that proves covid damages brains, even among the vaccinated. Right now experts say we're on track to be infected twice a year potentially.

@Scienceisnotopinions More data from PHAC here: https://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/post-covid-condition/

The most recent report from Fall '23 indicates it's >10% chance per infection

"14.6% of adults with 1 infection reported longer-term symptoms compared to 37.9% of adults with 3 or more infections."

Lovely mastodon savvy folk… I’ve been writing about and access to safe healthcare for the last number of months. Finally starting to publish & wondering best way to share on here. Is it still hashtags? I know there’s a wonderful community here - are outside links ok? Thanks in advance!

@trendless@zeroes.ca avatar

@broadwaybabyto hiya! Wb!

You might get less engagement sharing substack links due to this issue: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/22/business/substack-nazis-content-moderation.html

You're certainly welcome to use https://write.zeroes.ca; some folks also use https://ghost.io or https://buttondown.email.

We've also set the character limit to 5000, so you can post long thoughts right here -- I don't think Metatext properly supports this though, so you might need to grab a different app; e.g., @Feditext is basically a new version of Metatext that's in testflight/beta right now.

If you do thread with multiple posts, feel free to set the first one as "public" and the rest as "unlisted" so they don't overwhelm the Local feed.

If you have any questions or troubles, don't hesitate to tag or DM me or @zeroes -- always happy to help! 🙌

Did something happen on Mastodon this morning? I can't get any posts that go back more than about an hour just now, and it's not because that's eleventy billion or whatever. 😕

Edit: this is my home feed. Local seems ok, and Notifications.

What's the cheapest long-term mass storage option for digital files on physical storage? Has to be able to connect to a computer somehow without necessarily being a part of it

trendless,
@trendless@zeroes.ca avatar

@hannu_ikonen @raphaelmorgan second this; any size is probably fine, but a magnetic-platter based device (aka hard disk drive / hdd) is likely the best for TBs worth. Could get a dock and buy bare drives that you store in a cool, dark place, in static bags, too, though it's not necessarily cheaper.

For true archival storage, you can get archival-class dvd/bluray discs that purportedly last 100 years. Because they're write-once, there's no chance of the data degrading, only the chemicals used to make the disc -- which is what sets archival-class apart from non.
