@crecente @law That would depend on whether the output is considered to be a derivative, I guess? (Assuming it's not a quote.)

It can be frustrating that even when I use very purposeful, precise words, NT's sometimes seem intent on misunderstanding them. I know that's not actually the case, but I'm not in control of my emotional response to this happening. Goes to show, we're all only human.

@actuallyautistic

twan,
@twan@mastodon.online avatar

@Shivviness @actuallyautistic That's something I also do. I have to say, with varying results. It definitely works, sometimes. But when emotions or assumptions get into play, with accusations and tunnel vision following right behind, I try to remove myself from the situation as soon as possible. Not even as a conscious decision, more like a flight response. It's like my body wants to remove itself from the situation and my brain has nothing to say over it.

twan, to actuallyautistic
@twan@mastodon.online avatar

One big advantage of being is, for me, that I'm so used to in my life (heck, life is one big to me), when something happens that NT's perceive as a crisis, I usually don't blink an eye.

"Oh, but you stayed so calm and handled the situation!" – Nope, you're just used to see me on a daily basis in constant crisis mode.

I attended a party yesterday. As usual, I had trouble following people's conversation due to the background noise, zoning in and out. Suddenly I started thinking whether this is an autistic thing. I self-diagnosed last fall. Before that, I've just always assumed everyone has trouble hearing in those situations. Now I started wondering whether NTs can actually direct their attention to the discussion better in those situations. Any thoughts?

@actuallyautistic

twan,
@twan@mastodon.online avatar

@LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic I think that can be an autistic thing, yes. Depends on the autistic person, of course. For me it has to do with being distracted by, and not being able to filter out certain sounds. It does depend on the situation. The less energy I have, the more I can be distracted.

Say you only took NT's into account without saying you only took NT's into account...

"Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have posited that these types of pre-performance rituals help to alleviate our stress in part by simply forcing us to focus on something else, giving us less time and space to spiral out of control."

@anomalon @actuallyautistic Exactly. When I saw the title of the article, I at first completely misunderstood what they meant by 'rituals'. Then I read it and now I know they meant something that's horrific to me.

I'm curious—how do we feel about any/all of the following labels? Are we ok with them? Offended by them? Have attitudes changed at all recently? I've noticed we don't all use the same vocabulary here.

• on the spectrum
• ASD
• has autism
• with autism
• is autistic

How do you define the term, “Openly Autistic”?

  • Is it an autistic person who rarely masks?
  • Or, an autistic who isn't afraid and/or shy to share that they are actually autistic?
  • Or, an autistic person who is active in the autism acceptance “movement” (if we can call it that)?
  • Or, perhaps, an autistic who were interviewed and disclosed they're autistic?

Maybe you have other considerations or criteria that defines “openly autistic” for you?

NOTE: Being openly autistic is a choice and is not for everyone. I think it is safe to say that we all face discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice for being actually autistics, thus, most choose not to be open about it.

However, recently, there has been a slow growth in numbers of openly autistics, and like with most things in life, we have different criteria, definitions, and cultural considerations.

Thus, I am curious what you think, personally or maybe your immediate environment or organisation, is an openly autistic person. Or, when do you consider one as openly autistic.

Again, this is not about if an autistic person should be openly autistic or not. ^_^

Thank you for your interesting insights!

@youronlyone @AutisticDoctorStruggles @autistics @actuallyautistic In regards to work —I recently did exactly that. But I still feel the need to mask in all kinds of other situations, just to feel safe and comfortable, even though it costs me (sometimes dearly). I feel it's either that, or make life significantly more difficult for myself.

twan,
@twan@mastodon.online avatar

@youronlyone @AutisticDoctorStruggles @autistics @actuallyautistic Oof, that's tough. And recognizable... After my first serious burnout I was so naive. "I'll just tell everybody what happened and that it is because of my autism, and then they'll understand." Needless to say, that wasn't true. 🫤

Today the work on our bathroom started. Drilling, hammering, a radio playing, men stomping up and down the stairs, coordinating the placement of a container on the street... Also, later on I need to appear at the courthouse.

Cool, cool, cool... (Really curious how I'll feel at the end of this day.)

Ugh. First day of work on the bathroom is done. They did a great job, but it's quite the attack on the senses. Court case was utter BS. Took the day off tomorrow to recuperate (although more work on the bathroom will be done). Right, time to buy some booze. (Don't try this at home kids...)

@filmfreak75 @actuallyautistic You mean something like this? I am now reading Peter Vermeulen's 'Autism And The Predictive Brain'. Very interesting stuff in there, that to me, as an autistic adult, makes a lot of sense.

I've never related to the analogy of having no filter. It only works if communication is like a torrent of innermost thoughts that are constantly being stopped lest they spurt out.

I don't have to work to not communicate, I have to work to communicate. Everything I ever say is painstakingly assembled and forced out, the idea of being able to do that so easily that I could actually say something by accident is completely alien.

Is it just me?

@actuallyautistic

twan,
@twan@mastodon.online avatar

@Averixus @actuallyautistic I recognize the 'painstakingly assembling' part, although I still find myself in situations where I misjudge the consequences of my words, especially when I'm low on energy from making/trying to keep up with the day to day.
