I see people say hashtags only work on your own instance, or something along those lines. That doesn't match up with my experience posting mushroom or cat images with a hashtag. People liking them are all on different servers and most, if not all of them, are not following me. If I go and search for that hashtag (remembering to put # in front), I find similar posts from servers all over.

As I understand it, here's how hashtags work.

You can see any message with the hashtag that gets to your server.

How does it get to your server? Someone on your server has to be following the author. If no one on your server is following a post's author, it's not going to get transferred to your server, even if you follow that hashtag.

Group users on the other hand, propagate better- details in followup post

unixorn,

@jerzone

Group bot users like @homeassistant on the other hand, boost any messages they're mentioned in, so if you follow the group user, you'll see every post that @-mentions that user, whether or not anyone on your server is following the author.

Once the message gets pulled to your server because someone's following the bot, then anyone on your server following a hashtag in the post will see it.

There are other group bots, but they work in similar ways.

I have the weirdest bug. Sometimes, usually after rebooting the mac/updates, it won't let me sign in, “Invalid username or password”. I'm logged in with same credentials on my phone and I can log out/log in to another mac w/safari and those credentials just fine. The last time I figured it out was a while ago, but I forgot what the magic trick was. HA is on an old Pi 3.

@jerzone
I've had issues sometimes where my mac will start corrupting the clipboard - when I pasted the password into a terminal prompt I could see that it was truncated from what I was seeing in 1Password.

Quitting and restarting the app I'm pasting into fixes it. It only happens every few weeks so I haven't been able to track down the trigger.

Every time I wonder why I’m such a delta fan, I fly a different airline and remember.

United’s app wants the credit card expiration date as mm/yy, but you can only enter mmyy and the stupid app doesn’t format it correctly, so you can never enter the date

unixorn,
@unixorn@hachyderm.io avatar

@bynkii

United also has profoundly stupid account verification "security" questions where you have to pick the answers from drop down menus. No filling them in with free form.

Good job reducing the number of guesses attackers need to make.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an automated way to alert me if I leave my garage door open? I'm thinking about either a magnetic contact switch sensor or a vibration / tilt sensor. I don't know if I can mount a magnetic switch sensor on the door though.

It's a manual garage door.

@JoeCotellese @homeassistant @homeassistant

A while back I saw a garage door hack someone did with a hinge and a door sensor.

This wasn't it but you get the idea - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlwwGyNbR5U

The post I saw did mention that you don't want the magnet part on the hinge side or it could stick to the door instead of dangling and triggering the sensor to report 'open', so put the sensor receiver on the dangle bit

The genius of Strange New Worlds is: I can see where the plot is going most times, because it's following a well-trodden formula and tbh there's only so many episode archetypes out there. And yet... I watch it through, and love every second, because it's executed so well and gets the details right. I suspect this production team could make me watch a 50-minute advert for Quark's and I'd enjoy it.

unixorn,
@unixorn@hachyderm.io avatar

@danderson got me back into watching Trek again.

Season one of Picard was ok, but as soon as I saw Q in the trailer I wasn't interested in S2.

I like DeLancie as an actor, don't get me wrong, I just hate the inevitable Deus ex Machina with Q plotlines.

    I saw some kind of interference a few days ago that really slowed down our Zigbee network. It was temporary and likely due a rogue 2.4Ghz wifi device, but it impacted how we used our home. So I was wondering if anyone out there has tried wiring most of their home automation kit?

    Something like esp32s with wired NICs on a dedicated network? Sensor lines back to a central hub?

    I've thought about it. Running ethernet to everywhere in my house would be pretty expensive.

    I'd be more tempted if I could find or 8266 that did power over ethernet.

    revealed the two weirdest features as a pair.

    1. Give a short summary and Google will draft an e-mail for you based on it. You can even click "elaborate" and it will make the e-mail longer.

    2. When opening an e-mail, Gmail can summarize the entire thing for you so you don't have to read all of it.

    Does everyone realize how fucking bizarre this is?

    Both people in the conversation want to work with directness and brevity, and Google is doing textual steganography in the middle.

    Caveat. I DID bring a motion sensor up wih me when I came back upstairs, to pair with my coordinator. The one currently at the front door is misbehaving and needs replaced so it triggers @homeassistant automations more reliably.

    unixorn,
    @unixorn@hachyderm.io avatar

    @Ben @homeassistant

    I've found that pairing battery devices where they'll actually be used instead of near your coordinator leads to more reliable routing - that way they will route messages through the nearest powered device instead of trying to connect to the coordinator that might be across the house / on a different floor.
