We're sad to say that Kween Kream's cafe based at the Vagina Museum will be coming to an end this weekend. In a cost of living crisis, it has unfortunately become untenable for Kween Kream to run the cafe, despite us all working together and trying our very best to make this work.

This weekend is your last chance to visit Kween Kream at the Vagina Museum and enjoy some of their iconic sweet treats. They'll be open 11am-4pm today, Saturday and Sunday. After that, you'll be able to connect with them on their website if you'd like a private commission https://kweenkream.co.uk/

It's tough out there at the moment. Make sure you don't take the independent businesses and charities you love for granted. Take every opportunity to show your support and visit these places you love, to keep them in the world. https://www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/donate

There's no age limit to the Vagina Museum. Families are welcome, with children of all ages. Nobody is too young to learn about anatomy and correct terms for parts of their bodies!

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

Small children are welcome in the Vagina Museum on any days, although on Wednesday mornings, we hold special viewing sessions where your little ones can be as noisy as they like! Admission is, as always, free https://www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/accessmornings

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

We don't expect a small child to understand everything in our exhibitions, just like another museum wouldn't expect a small child to understand the social context of German Expressionism or advanced sauropod taxonomy. A museum is a part of a journey of learning - and museums are fun for kids!

Our website is currently undergoing some routine maintenance. We'll be back up and running as soon as possible! The Museum itself is open as normal over the weekend: 10am-6pm with free admission.

Tomorrow we're proud to host Containers: an interdisciplinary art installation and performance challenging a patriarchal society through evocative sensory experience https://www.outsavvy.com/event/19368/containers

So this post broke containment slightly and ended up on the meme pages. We are happy to tell you everything you need to know about cloacas.

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

A cloaca is a multipurpose hole that lots of animals have. Rather than having separate holes for peeing, pooping and reproduction, a cloaca is a hole that does all of the above. They're the norm in birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Almost no mammals have them, we go with a selection of specialised holes instead.

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

There's exceptions to the rule that mammals don't have cloacas, of course monotremes, tenrecs, golden moles (who aren't moles) and marsupial moles (who are not moles). We're delighted to share a few examples that we've told you about before.

First of all, there's platypuses, those weird little existential crisis provokers: https://masto.ai/

Then there's the tenrecs, who hold some unusual records: https://masto.ai/

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

There's also a case to be made for marsupials having something similar to a cloaca - their reproductive junk and urethra open out into the same place. You can learn more about this fascinating anatomy using the drop bear as an example https://masto.ai/

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

Anyway, cloacas aren't especially common in mammals, but for the other amniotes and the amphibians, that's just how they live. The word derives from the Latin for sewer or drain, which has roots in "to cleanse", and it may also sometimes be referred to as a vent.

Some animals have a phallus which emerges from the cloaca, which helps out with reproduction. It's inserted into the female's cloaca.

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

And some animals might have exceedingly complicated extensions on the cloaca - for example, female ducks have a corkscrewing maze leading to the reproductive tract with a ton of blind alleys to prevent unwanted fertilisation.

And some female animals have prehensile lips capable of picking sperm up on their cloacas. Like Captain Janeway, possibly. https://masto.ai/

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

So that's what a cloaca is: a very normal hole which loads of animals have instead of a vagina. And instead of an anus. And instead of a urethra.

@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

it has been brought to our attention that the minge in question belongs to a plant-based chicken substitute. science has not yet explored the urogenital system of the vegan chicken. further research is required to confirm whether a vegan chicken has a minge or a cloaca.

Can a museum exhibition contribute to science? Yes!!!! More than 12,000 people visited our exhibition, Endometriosis: Into the Unknown. Visitors were invited to contribute data to a pain scale. Thousands of responses were made throughout the exhibition...

This week's Feminist Lecture explores the Anatomical Venus: beautiful, disturbing, life-sized wax figures seen in 18th century Florence. Why were these figures made? And what can they tell us about their creators and ourselves? https://www.outsavvy.com/event/18571/feminist-lecture-program-collab-the-anatomical-venus

The Vagina Museum does not charge admission. As museums, we are presented with the choice between ensuring there are no financial barriers between a visitor and our exhibitions, and generating more income. We choose the former.

[Ironically paywalled article] Can Britain’s museums remain free for much longer? | Times Culture https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-museums-free-entry-charge-tickets-w5jppmrh3

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

It's a difficult choice to make: we're not receiving big money from anywhere else. We're certainly not receiving government funding like the museums featured in that article. But we know that an admission fee would be much like locking our doors to many people who want to visit.

In a world of misinformation, taboos and stigma, it's vital that we keep the Vagina Museum an accessible space to visit. We shouldn't - and mustn't! - be a luxury only available to those who can pay to visit.

vagina_museum,
@vagina_museum@masto.ai avatar

All of our exhibitions across our three galleries are free to enter because learning and the arts isn't a privilege, it's something anyone should be able to access. The Vagina Museum is almost entirely funded by people donating what they can, or choosing to buy something in our gift shop. If you agree that museums should be free, any contribution truly makes a huge difference in tough times for funding in the sector https://www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/donate
