Fediverse update thread 🔔🧵

For those of you who don't know, @Threads is being built on the ActivityPub protocol, which means that it will be interoperable with other apps/servers like Mastodon over time. This week we took a small, but important, step by allowing people in the Fediverse, who don't use Threads or even have an Instagram account, to follow my Threads account as well as a few others. Content is starting to flow from Threads to the Fediverse.

wild1145,

@Archie8 @mosseri People on Mastodon can, people on Threads cannot and I would be surprised if they are even storing it right now given privacy concerns.

fuzzyface, to random

@wild1145 Does the Atlas Media blog support RSS at all?

wild1145,

@fuzzyface It should do, https://blog.atlas-media.co.uk/rss/ should work. I think it's what I've used a few times for hooking into automation

wild1145, to random

I finally finished writing a blog post! I'm really behind so apologies but the "formal" announcement that we have taken over Universeodon.com

https://blog.atlas-media.co.uk/2023/12/15/the-mastodonapp-uk-team-takes-on/

wild1145,

@fuzzyface Sorry about that, it should bounce back. Due to every instance MastodonApp.UK and the servers we relay to knows trying to get metadata it sometimes overwhelms the blog for a short window which is annoying.

wild1145,

@siderea Character limit should be set, however there is a bug where some apps pick up 500 as there's a mis-configured modification that some updated apps are using. It should be fixed to 1000 but depending on the app it may be broke.

Search will be coming back, I am hoping to have some time around the Christmas break where I can deploy and configure all of the extra servers we need to re-activate search, it's just taken a little longer than I had hoped to have the free time!

wild1145,

@siderea So the bug is on my end, I've modified Mastodon's source code to make the character limit configurable which isn't supported natively in Mastodon. I'm just not someone who's super great at writing code and it's a lot of time for me to both fix the bug and also pull in the updates I need to pull in to update Universeodon to the next minor version where some other bugs were fixed by the mastodon devs.

TLDR: My fault sorry!

fuzzyface, to random

@wild1145 Assume that you're all over it, but just to let you know I fully support the defederation of anything Meta/FB related. 🙂

wild1145,

@fuzzyface I don't think I've properly made a statement on it, mostly because there hasn't been a great time to get a few days of abuse from folks that disagree.

Right now we're in a "let's wait and see", it costs us nothing to defed if we need to, but if it means we can pull folks off of Threads and onto Mastodon / similar then that's great, if moderation when they properly federate becomes an issue (same as any other server) we can take action.

mastodonmigration, (edited ) to threads
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.

Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).

Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

wild1145,

@mastodonmigration @Gargron @rexum The issue is if they wanted to do that, they would already be doing it, without anyone needing to know about it, at a significantly less cost to building Threads and without any risk of a PR backlash...

It costs very little to setup a Mastodon Server and join it to as many relays as you can get... Then scrape that data trivially. It wouldn't make any financial sense to setup Threads just for this reason (or even it be a major aspect)

bytebro, to random

Hello, peeps. When browsing through my Home feed on Masto and come across a post in <insert non-English language>, it would be wonderful if I had a button somewhere to hit 'Translate'. If there is one, I've not yet found it. Anyone have suggestions?

wild1145,

@bytebro @GreenSkyOverMe It's certainly on my radar, for we have been piggy backing off of the LibreTranslate @stux hosts, I hadn't rolled it out here as I wanted to get to a point where both instances were somewhat in parity but it should be a relatively trivial addition for as long as Stux is happy hosting it.

I do plan longer term to stand up my own LibreTranslate but that's more because I like hosting everything in my own environment!

throsby, to random

The hashtag column on seems not to be updating and requires a browser refresh to see the latest. Might be to do with an outage - I couldn't access Universeodon last night briefly. So maybe a server is trying to catch up. Just sayin' - refresh ur browser if it's important.

wild1145,

@throsby Feeds should now be auto populating again but it will probably require a browser refresh.

LiveByReason, to random

@wild1145 Hi, looks like Universeodon is back online (although maybe it needs to catch up on toots? Doesn't look like your post on mastodonapp earlier has synced over yet).

Thanks for adminning this instance, and thanks for getting it back online.

wild1145,

@LiveByReason Yeah there's around 185k tasks to process in the content processing queue so I suspect it might take a little bit of time for it to fully back fill posts it is able to back fill unfortunately. It may go offline again for a short amount of time while I finish remedial action to get things back up and running properly.

wild1145, to random

It looks like is currently having some issues. I'm away from home without my laptop right now. As soon as I get home (hour and a half to two hours) I'll get things back up and running.

Sorry about this I've been at work all day and the phone signal in the office is super crap!

wild1145, to random

For my community:

I plan to perform the first step in the upgrades to this instance at some point between Christmas and the end of the First week in Jan, i'm not yet 100% sure exactly when, but as I have a couple of weeks off I will (at some point) have half a day to a day that I can spend to get things here mostly up to date (Probably a minor patch or two behind as I need to also update my custom fork of Mastodon before I can update to the very latest).

wild1145,

I'm really sorry things here have slowed down, it's become really really hard to find enough time to dedicate to those bigger projects with a lot of behind the scenes things that I've been juggling.

I am hoping to spend some time around the upgrade doing some more major work but will aim to do that at a time where we don't get as much traffic here as it will require me to take the site fully offline and to migrate the database as there has been a long term config issue meaning we drop...

wild1145,

a very small number of posts / display errors to a handful of posters using some special characters.

I've managed to get everything that was due to renew November / December renewed for another year, so while a large financial expense it does mean we aren't going anywhere for another year :)

wild1145,

I do also hope around the same time to finish getting setup for us (As I've been meaning to do it for a long time) and do some general TLC to the instances (here and ) and it's underlying infrastructure. I'm hoping as part of this I can do some work to scale up some of the areas that currently struggle and scale down some of the bits that are heavily over-provisioned.

wild1145,

As it turns out, owning a house and also getting ready for Christmas and having more work responsibilities means free time is very slim, plus having to deal with all the financial aspects of filing tax returns and renewing a lot of hardware.

I do expect in the coming few months to have more time to dedicate so apologies again for things that have been a bit quiet!

wild1145,

@keefeglise Thankfully things are mostly setup to keep ticking over within reason. Updates require manual intervention but otherwise I have a mod team that work without my day to day involvement and unless we see a surge of traffic or something starts to get close to filling up I thankfully can be pretty hands off day to day which has very much helped with the need for time working on other things!

FourT4, to random

It's Sunday which means it's time for me to ask @wild1145 whether Sundays are normally the quietest day on mastodonuk? It feels like it. Or.maybe I just follow people that have better things to do on a Sunday!

wild1145,

@FourT4 I don't really have any solid data either way. I've generally felt it quieter on a Sunday especially in the mornings but I couldn't prove that unfortunately!

wild1145, to random

Sorry for the radio silence for a little while folks, life's been busy and I haven't had the time to dedicate here compared to usual.

I'm currently feeling a bit under the weather and am on antibiotics for an infection and with it being the run up to Christmas @PrinceMumbles and I have been pretty busy seeing friends and family.

I should get a bit more active in the coming weeks and am hoping to catch up on all the things I've been meaning to do here and on

wild1145, to mastodon

In just a couple of hours (21:05 UK Time) will hit it's 1 year anniversary, which honestly looking back is something I wasn't sure we'd make it to for a while.

We've had a wild journey with some huge scaling issues at the start, both being at the time one of the few sites on the website that accepted registrations, being on the BBC news and various radio interviews, we went from 1 or 2 users to over 1k overnight and went onto over 50k in the first week.

wild1145,

@BeardedBulldog The support is hugely appreciated and just having folks like yourself that are active and engage on here is hugely appreciated.

In terms of routes to contribute,

https://ko-fi.com/mastodonappuk is our Ko-Fi which has been running for quite some time.

https://www.patreon.com/universeodon is our Patreon originally from the Universeodon instance that I took over running a short while ago.

In all cases it comes to myself and the team so if / when you can support it's appreciated!

keefeglise, to random

I think I've been here a year. That's a lot of complete cobblers that's flowed under the bridge.

wild1145,

@pixiepippi @keefeglise @lesighlepurr @Walkaholic If you're interested down to the min, it's November 6, 2022 at 7:10 PM

wild1145,

@lesighlepurr @keefeglise @Walkaholic @pixiepippi Unfortunately I can't see sign-up dates & times for folks on other instances, I'd suggest seeing if someone from your instance admin team could check, @Mastodon is the only handle I know but there might be a better one for their mods / admins :)

Anthro, to random

Absolutely NO images visible in ????

Can we get a status of the situation?

Repost if you are having similar issues.

wild1145,

@Anthro It's a bit difficult, but around 8 hours ago would have been 3PM ish here in the UK which we get a lot of traffic (as the server that serves Universeodon and the media is also serving mastodonapp.uk), it'd have been the morning (I think) over on the east coast which would have usually resulted in a surge in traffic everywhere.

I'm in the process of building out another server to try to better spread the load and fix some of these longer standing performance issues.

Is tootctl status remove safe these days?

(content cache retention is not set)

wild1145,

@jan This will break the user experience as a warning. Mastodon doesn't (as far as I know) support re-fetching conversations so once you delete it, your users won't know there were replies / similar.
