Partner has seen Ubiquiti's UI and now it seems like we might be going for one of those setups instead of building a custom opnsense box :p

wild1145,

@arch If you aren't using Ubiquiti's Dream Machine / AP's is there a benefit to going to the trouble of self hosting their management system? Opnsense may not be super user friendly if you aren't experienced but it works really well on any infrastructure whereas I've not heard a lot of great stories trying to self host the Ubiquiti software even when you're deep in their ecosystem of hardware.

wild1145,

@arch That's fair, I do rate the Ubiquiti kit I've been running it here and other than a few minor issues with it that I don't love it's been really solid. I've reserved things like OpnSense here for a lab / homelab type environment if I want to segregate off. The only down side of Ubiquity is it's not the cheapest and the products work so well together so I've spent a lot of money on their kit!

wild1145,

@arch I intend to try running it with a OpenWRT AP shortly where I don't want to buy an AP for my garage but only need a single network on it. In theory you can use any kit with it, you just loose the nice management wrapper as far as I am aware.

One of my hard drives is clicking and uuh...

these are brand new. I'd better not need to replace one already.

wild1145,

@arch Unfortunately (IIRC) new hard drives tend to have the highest failure rate, I've had similar issues with jobs before where a decent chunk of the drives are either dead on arrival or die within a couple of weeks and need to be RMA'd...

is it possible to see which instances have suspended us? I assume probably not, and I understand why that should be hidden for individual accounts, but it seems like for instances that might be nice to know just to be accountable/be able to reconcile problems - hey noticed u had us blocked, thats cool but curious why/if there was something we should be doing we arent, etc.

wild1145,

@jonny There are some third party tools out there, though other than looking through common block lists that isn't really a great way to do it and as far as I've seen it is by design to try to protect those instances blocking others from abuse.

Also as a reminder for the and users here, we have Elk running on both sites if you want something a little bit different when it comes to your website style.

https://elk.mastodonapp.uk and https://elk.universeodon.com respectively!

Turns out sleeping is hard tonight so while I'm staying with my parents who have a lovely open fire in the living room, I'm going to get nice and cosy here with a nice fire going while I do a bit of sys admin work :)

Threads Is Going To Destroy The Fediverse https://youtu.be/UANbWY2W__g

wild1145,

@tumble @BrodieOnLinux I have commented a bit on this and am working on a proper blog post but the tldr is I'm treating them like anyone else. If they moderate to my teams satisfaction and play nice I have no issue federating. If they don't moderate or moderate in a responsible way we will have to block them. I know there are conversations happening about the connectivity and moderation so I'm waiting to hear more about that (I haven't watched the original vid yet)

wild1145, (edited ) to random

A very Merry to all of you that celebrate it. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day and where possible & practical you've been able to catch up and spend time with family.

While the team here are spending time with family and loved ones we will still be keeping the lights on so my thanks as always to my amazing moderation team and to all of you, the amazing MastodonAppUK and Universeodon.com communities!

wild1145,

@caskfan Of course, https://ko-fi.com/mastodonappuk is the original way we had setup, https://www.patreon.com/universeodon is the Patreon account we took over when we took over Universeodon, both will come to me and my team to support the running of both instances :)

Is just really shit at moderation tools or is mastodon.world just shit at moderating? Shouldn't there be some spam filter or some shit to prevent posts like this from even being published? Idfk because I'm not a .

RE: https://makai.chaotic.ninja/notes/9nn30cn1ps

wild1145,

@mima Mastodon unfortunately doesn't currently have any automated moderation tools, it's entirely dependant on someone reviewing a report and taking action. I know the mastodon.world admin has been blocking IP Ranges of the spammers but that's about as much as you can do to prevent this sort of stuff annoyingly.

mima, to random

why am I still seeing this shit, I thought I removed the offending relay :koishtare:

(at)4b8e0d65881f97(at)mastodon.world for CSAM spamming

RE: https://makai.chaotic.ninja/notes/9nmyoxwild

wild1145,

@mima Relays aren't the only way that content gets into your instance, There might be a follow / following relationship or (I think) it can be if both instances have previously interacted that posts will be sent between them.

wild1145, to random

I've disabled the full text search capability here on which should stop the errors folks were seeing on the website / apps from displaying. I will look to re-deploy the stack required to run this after Christmas :)

wild1145, to random

Merry Christmas all.

wild1145, to random

There is an ongoing issue with our search capability. I've posted an incident on https://status.atlas-media.co.uk covering it.

Where it's Christmas and I'm planning to spend time with the family it might take a little bit of time to fix this.

wild1145, to random

I am entirely not organised for today...

I was supposed to be doing some tidying around the house and christmas gift wrapping but have just ended up having to do some maintenance to the side gate of my house as the bolt kept coming loose and then opening in the high winds. I'm hoping that'll hold it now because I don't really want to spend much more time on it until I get the entire fence and gate replaced early next year...

wild1145, to random

Apologies for the blip there on #MastodonAppUK and #Universeodon it looks like we ran into some issues that should now be resolved.

I'm investigating into what caused it, the initial investigation would suggest there may have been some form of attack that partially bypassed our CDN layer causing the load balancer to crash but I am still investigating and will update once I know a bit more.

wild1145,

@foo I think I've resolved the issue but please let me know if it is still happening?

wild1145,

@foo I can see and validate an issue on the back end but can't see what's exactly causing it. I need to dash offline now and get things ready for Christmas so will try to take a look in slow time but it might just be a case of it doesn't work for a few days unfortunately, depends on how much time I get over the coming days.

IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.

Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).

Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

wild1145,

@michaelgemar @mastodonmigration @Gargron @rexum Nothing, it's how federation at it's core works... I store data (posts and cached profile bits) about every user my server knows about, there is nothing stopping me processing that data in a way I see fit. The only thing that is unique here is Meta have written their own software and not used Mastodon. There's a whole lot of misinformation and fud, and this topic is a big part of that. Again, if meta wanted to steal data, they would already do so.

wild1145,

@michaelgemar @mastodonmigration @Gargron @rexum There is nothing stopping them just standing up a Mastodon / similar server tomorrow to gather as much info as they can into the software's database and then dumping that into whatever data lake / warehouse they already have in place. The reality of this all is this is giving us a great chance to bring folks that would never have considered Mastodon / similar before over onto our communities without risking anything we don't already risk.

wild1145, to random

Just wanted to share, I've now taken over the Patreon page so if you were hoping to support us but don't like / can't use Ko-Fi, we are now back online there!

Checkout the page: https://www.patreon.com/posts/patreon-change-90905194?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link

wild1145,

@mission_europa There's a better post here - https://blog.atlas-media.co.uk/2023/12/15/the-mastodonapp-uk-team-takes-on/

But the tldr is the location of the servers have moved and the ownership has changed but otherwise everything should be mostly as normal. We do have some teething issues we are working to fix but from a "what should the place look like" it shouldn't be any different to before the change in ownership.
