There's a Ren faire here in Montana in June and I wanna go. Has anyone been to one before?

I'm looking at all of these things and lusting over the big long haired blond bearded Viking model and wanting to order some things

Can you go as a Viking to a Ren faire? Lol

@thickurt you can, you should, it will be a triumph, and we all want to see the photos. Seriously it’s a fun time!

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@James @mjromano @thickurt I haven’t been to a Ren Faire in years. When is the Maryland one?

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@James @thickurt Oh you shared a link :). We might be around there then.

Every time I use Apple Music I'm struck by how much work it must have taken to make it so terrible. The search function along is a case study in “how to shit on your users."

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@btaroli Catalog is great, excellent sound quality, and I have an investment in years of playlists, burned CDs, etc. I think YouTube music is nearly as good but the thought of organizing it all there is just too much. And oh yeah Apple devices airplay etc. It's just bad enough to hate but not quite bad enough to deal with replacing.

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@btaroli luckily I found better podcast apps early on. I’m actually doing a slow but steady move off of Apple only stuff simply to have more choice in hardware but I think music will be the hardest one.

I feel like Gmail's iOS app didn't use to open links in an in-app browser, but I can't find a setting to make that happen, so maybe I dreamed that. Shouldn't in-app browsers be a war crime or something by now?

Keith Lee wasn't too impressed with NYC, so he came back to Houston to review some more underrated spots.

@philip_cardella @TexasObserver @Chron lol. Austin does have some excellent dining, though the pretentiousness has gotten pretty intense, which kind of feels like Albany, NY putting on airs - just a bit comical.

Despite not seeking it out, I wake up to hate speech, I stumble upon hate speech all day, I go to bed after looking at hate speech that I’m too exhausted to process. Then I have a nightmare. Every day. Over and over.

When I tell people this, their advice is that I should exclude myself from things and spaces and pretend it’s not happening. I should “just” get a different job.

This is not good advice and only further isolates me from even the people who aren’t spewing outright hatred about us.

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@ryanhoulihan this was very thoughtful and right on point and yes! I support you! Two thoughts, no advice.

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@ryanhoulihan First, this really reminded me of being a young queer guy in the 80s and being frustrated by straight people who made supportive noises but didn't speak up when it mattered. Even in a very progressive place then (Boston) it was rage inducing. One mark coming out in the middle of AIDS left on me was feeling like one could never fully trust the straights because they'd always have their safe place to run to. Not saying this was good or fair but after enough funerals, oh well.

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@ryanhoulihan 2nd, I try to never be that sort of unreliable ally. I probably fail sometimes. But I'm by apalled by gay people who ask "what does trans have to do with us?" I mean, how do you form a queer identity and not figure that out? How do you not see those connections? Are people just sleepwalking through life? I don't know.

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@ryanhoulihan It's like running into racist gay people. You're lucky enough to be queer and question things, and you've learned nothing?

My prediction is that Apple will make changes—fixing bugs and/or closing loopholes—that break Beeper Mini. It’s untenable that there’s unsanctioned client software for a messaging platform for which privacy and security are a primary feature.

It’s a very nice app, remarkably clever, and for now works like a charm, but if Apple wanted an iMessage client for Android they’d release an iMessage client for Android. Seems irresponsible for Beeper to charge a subscription for an unsupported service.

woolfhound,
@woolfhound@woof.group avatar

@gruber wonder if anybody at apple is noticing that android users will pay money for imessage.

    @ryanhoulihan @DopeGhoti I like to point out that in German the pronoun “sie” can mean she, they, or you, and literally no German speaker is confused by this, so are English speakers just dumb?

    woolfhound,
    @woolfhound@woof.group avatar

    @ryanhoulihan @DopeGhoti I admit that singular they felt awkward to me when it became common, but I am old, si tha5s my problem. actually complaining about it is the 21st century version of “gay used to mean happy, dammit,” and omg who wants to be that person?

    About Amazon's decline in recent months: I have an Amazon account I use ONLY for buying ebooks. Nothing else, ever, going back over a decade.

    My recommendations page in that account now contains no ebooks, only products from categories I never purchase, like lawnmowers (I don't have a garden) and dresses (I'm a boring cis male).

    I can't actually find any new ebooks I want to read via Amazon recommendations any more. And this seems to be an outcome of deliberate changes? Why would they DO that?

    woolfhound,
    @woolfhound@woof.group avatar

    @cstross they want you to buy ebooks that they have published to cut out those annoying publishers and authors. Eventually I expect they’ll mainly publish AI generated ebooks primarily.

    Pet peeve: all food writing now refers to restaurants as “concepts” and it’s so fucking dumb and pretentious. “Restaurant” makes me think of good times with food and friends. “Concept” makes me think “an asshole runs this place.”
