@aphyr I'm not hip to the way LLMs work, but won't the results keep getting shittier as newer models scrape text from pages that are generated by previous models until we devolve into nonsense
One of the weird effects of widespread LLM contamination of search results is that for several recent house repair/cleaning problems I have given up on trying to find an answer online altogether and instead bicycled several miles to a physical store to ask their advice.
@aphyr I have a DIY book from the 1930s. Some of its advice is, erm... questionable by modern safety standards*, but in other parts it can be far superior to any other source.
*Make your own ice box by sawing up sheets of asbestos! Power devices by plugging them into a light socket!
@aphyr UGH YES. And it's so hard to explain this to non-technical information seekers. Was having a conversation with a relative recently and I mentioned how I was frustrated that everything on Google is AI-generated these days, and she asked "how can you tell?" and I was like "uh.... practice? Instinct? I DON'T KNOW, I'M SORRY"
Like, I feel like I have a decent intuition for it, but I wouldn't be able to coach other people on it easily.
