Was there ever a time when publicly-traded companies didn’t do stupid shit to juice their stock price rather than make good stuff and keep customers happy?

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@grmpyprogrammer yes, some time before 1980 for sure but the stock buy is only a "recent" (last 20? years) because that was considered illegal

gizmomathboy,

@grmpyprogrammer and the dude that said CEO pay should be tied to stock price has since recanted that statement

Realized it's actually been a year and change since I recapped what my chessables ARE, so:

I wanted a chess set plus a ton of extra pieces, for variant chess games, tokens for other stuff, etc, so I made some 3d printable ones.

They came out pretty cool.

Then I 3d printed them as molds and cast them with plaster and painted them.

I'm still working on making them as aluminum molds for plastic injection.

I'm now ALSO working on making them as plaster molds to slipcast them as ceramics.

@LeviKornelsen I think Mike is a rather decent game designer and developer.

His chess 28 thing is still kinda out there though :-)

I have obtained a beautiful IBM ThinkPad 560. Unfortunately, there are no signs of life when power is applied. However, it's in such lovely shape that I have no choice but to repair this.

There is a well-established tradition of making and iterating upon designs of 3D printers, but...Has anybody thought "I am going to make a 2D printer"? This feels like a gap. Sometimes, I just want to compose a letter to my grandmother or do little a mail merge, as a treat. Expandability would be great; Centronics, RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces would be fantastic, with maybe an embedded PostScript.

Am I insane?

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@xan I think I've seen a decent amount of plotter type things that use nice pens and such

I haven't really looked into them though

I've definitely seen some get nice creations from them though

Also, you are not insane

Cranky opinion: Notification systems make sense on phones, but have never made sense on desktop/laptop computers. I feel like I basically never get a notification on a desktop unless it's either some kind of ad or just the OS vendor deciding to annoy me.

Even on Linux, the notification system finds ways to show me ads for… other parts of Linux?

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@mcc fwup i think is in all distros that have systemd

Also, it's only useful if you are using efi

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@mcc I really depends on the hardware and how easy it is to install stuff

We have many hosts that we have to use legacy bios

I can't recall the last time, if ever, I used the GUI

I hang out on the cli primarily, sysadmin by profession, so...

I also personally run Linux mint xfce so not quite Ubuntu and not quite gnome

Not that any of this helps you with your problem(s)

My personal stuff is also older Dell optiplex and latitudes. Which shouldn't matter too much compared to Lenovo <shrug>

what I hate about some distros...they take some core things out of a language and make it a separate package.

In this case it is the Perl module FindBin. It's core perl but for some reason it is not installed by default since it is a separate package....

I've had significantly worse starts to a day

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

And to name and shame this is Oracle Linux 9.

So presumably Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 is the actual culprit.

Also, perl docs are also a separate package. I can half see why you might but install them by default but it's one of Perl's super powers.

I know you might not want it on a host that just runs Perl programs, but what percentage is that? Is disk space really that tight?

@grmpyprogrammer Mike has another game in beta

It might not be your thing but it's an interesting play concept he's going for

https://planetsmashergames.com/early-access/pacific-command/

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@grmpyprogrammer hmmm, hobgoblin might be better for that

Pacific Command probably could be for 4-6 for a scale 7-8 game. Maybe.

I suppose each player could run a task force or two, and grouped into sides, or go free for all.

I just did a read through of the rules and I'm still digesting them.

Definitely not a solo game.

The core idea is double blind info.

Opponents don't know what's in a stack and you don't necessarily have to let your opponent know what you find in their stack.

So the oldest has a wired connection now.

I had thought about running a line to our bedroom where the spouse had an office.

Reader, I was fuck all tired and noped the fuck out.

Instead I terminated the run, half assed getting the "network" area into about 50% less tire fire and then soaked in the tub

Beyond all else, "Marquee Moon" is a 10-minute song, and when I was in early CS, with a 2am turn-in time for projects, I would repeat "Marquee Moon" and commit every time the song ends.

gizmomathboy,
@gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@jacobydave @perigrin well, I think it's mid that they don't want to give up a workflow that can grade submitted code and can have a hard cutoff for turning in assignments

I have no clue when teaching a version control system was actually taught.

I think Dave was using the system for something not explicitly its intended purpose
