Is there really a reason, for example, for there to be the distinction of "magazine" and "community"? When you're federating, the same features should be called the same, if close enough. That way everyone can talk with everyone about stuff and we all immediately understand each other....
I agreee. With email, there’s different email websites I can use, but it would put me off if I made a gmail account, and everything was labelled differently there compared to thte other email websites.
Like if inbox was called something really strange, I just think it would put me off a lot. I use kbin, and even I think it would help if these were renamed. Kbin is new too! Only a month old, so I don’t even know if the developers felt strongly about calling it a magazine or just needed to label all of these in a way that made sense to them.
But yeah I try to be inclusive and use “communities/magazines” but it feels kind of ridiculous because it’s so long. I don’t even like “communities” because it is so long to type…I like “forums” for both. It makes sense because they are forums, and it’s short. I don’t mind “communities” though, and it would be so great if kbin wants to consider relabelling, but they technically also don’t have to and I still will use it.
But I still think it’s the smart thing to do to make it easier for others to use. Should try to decrease friction so people can use their tool to do other things, rather than spend so much time figuring out how to use the tool.
If you wanna see other kbin servers you can join, there's a list here https://kbin.fediverse.observer/list
kbin.place looks like it's in the US and has less people?
Is there an easy way to mass subscribe to many magazines on a new server though? I don't know how ernest added so many for kbin.social, but it would definitely help new members not have a tough time.
I made an account on a newer server for lemmy - lemmy.studio - and I have to say, having to manually add communities really just feels like an unneccessary step, and harder to do considering you'd have to search communities/magazines from both lemmy (https://lemmyverse.net/communities) and kbin (not sure if there's a site to search for magazines besides https://kbin.social/magazines)
They said you can put quotes to it like
Pear “Join Lemmy” OR “Powered by kbin”
The “Join Lemmy” the commenter said, is on every lemmy server’s page, so it can help capture results from servers not following lemmy.*
Pear site:lemmy.* OR site:kbin.*
would miss things from many servers not following this naming convention
I think as the top comment here said, there are tools people make to help search the fediverse. There will be a good way to search it if it did become very popular
okay the only thing is, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to keep making instance names that don't start with kbin.___ because then if kbin/lemmy really do take off, it would be so hard to google search for them. You can't do the site:kbin.* search if those instances with different names make magazines/communities and you can't find them with that google filter
I think there needs to be an easier way to see communities/magazines across aggregators because I see the lemmy browse sites for communities won't show any kbin magazines, which I think will only hurt the point of decentralizing but being able to access all the content in the fediverse.
I'm not sure if kbin actually suffers the same way, because I'm on kbin.social which I'm guessing just already has all the current lemmy communities added. But if there's a new lemmy community, and no one added it to kbin.social (how would they find out?) then no one will find out if this lemmy community blows up and becomes really popular right?
I've heard you can do a google search and append say kbin.social to get results just from kbin, but if I wanted to treat the fediverse's content like reddit's, is there a way to do the google search on just everything that's on the fediverse?...
Keep in mind though that kbin is actually newer than lemmy, (only a month old?) so it truly is more barebones than reddit. The developers are working hard though :) 2 days ago, becuase of the server load, I couldn't even stay logged in on kbin, it was that buggy, but a day later it was stable
Sometimes the site goes a little buggy. Sometimes i get 503 but i just wait, refresh, or i heard someone say too they have lemmy and kbin account and use the other when one is down xD I think it’s still adjusting to having so many users

I love avatar the last airbender too. I haven’t found a show like it since. Besides that, I still like anime (though less nowadays because of some sexist parts)

Prior to the protest reddit was in full support of the protest. Most polls on subs supported a shutdown. Now, seemingly every community cant understand why the protest was needed and they're calling it a mod power trip. There is a 3rd possibility. This is an unfounded conspiracy but reddit themselves could be manipulating...
There is some hope though. I think those naysayers were simply the loudest because when I go to some subs like r/pics, r/askmen, r/apple, people are supporting the strike. On r/apple, people are even made and saying yes, reddit’s threat to remove mods is mostly a bluff as they can not replace what was 5000 subreddits of mods in a timely manner. On r/askmen (which I usually dislike but today I’m happy with them) people are wanting them to extend the blackout. On r/adhdmemes, their poll is showing overwhelmingly indefinite blackout.
On r/pics most people love the new mod rule put in place to only post pictures of this one public figure
A fellow mod informed me that about it as I was laying in bed. Reddit sent a message to the mod team and after 1 hour demoded me. I didn't even had time to see it, never-mind respond to it....
