Skua,

The "81 vs 91" thing makes for a snappier soundbite. It doesn't mean that the other things don't matter, just that there was a catchier way to mention the felony counts

Dismayed by Moscow's war, Russian volunteers are joining Ukrainian ranks to fight Putin's troops (apnews.com)

When Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ignited into war, back in Moscow, a young Russian who now goes by the name of Karabas was plunged into despair. Shocked by images of what was happening to Ukrainians in Russian-occupied areas, he decided to act — against Russia, his home and country....

Skua,

Brave men. I can only wish them luck

Skua,

How is this a counter to what he said? The second-most democratic country in the world isn't the most democratic either, it'd still be a bad thing for it to lose its democracy

Skua,

If you fuck off home and pay Ukraine for the damage you've done then we'll give it back.

Skua,

It's worth remembering that WW2 was an existential threat to the Soviet Union and most of the people living in it. This war isn't. See how the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan turned out.

And, of course, Ukraine was also part of the Soviet Union. Russians weren't the only ones fighting the Nazis on the Eastern Front

Skua,

A shitload har har har

Apparently the average UK adult defecates about 100g per day, and that's the first link that showed up so I'm going to go with the UK numbers in that one study. According to wikipedia there were 11,346 ascents as of July 2022. Assuming two weeks from base camp to summit and back, based on Tom Kilpatrick's article on The Manual, that means 1.4 kg of shit per climb for a total of almost 16 metric tonnes or 17.5 short tons

Skua,

I have to assume it's thicker than the typical sword of the time, since that's the dimension that will be giving it strength if you catch a sword in one of the grooves and attempt to bend it. 1600 CE Italy is a time and place where rapiers were in common use, so it'd be going up against extremely long and thin swords. That said I'd assume that rather than breaking them in most instances, it would at best bend them. You don't want your sword to be made of the absolute hardest steel possible specifically because it will then break if you damage it, so maybe these daggers could also be tempered to be far harder (and more brittle) if you were in a position to not worry about the cost of breaking it

Skua,

The Ukrainian government clearly reckons that famous people getting special treatment is worse

Skua,

Why would Olympic athletes not be drafted?

Skua,

The pressure on Russia's manpower is not the plain old number of humans in the country, it's the amount that they can commit to this war without having so much of a domestic impact that public opinion turns against the government too much. Ukraine has a quarter of the population but has the domestic support to be able to call up everyone that can fight. Russia doesn't want to do this, so it uses the likes of Wagner and prison conscripts that won't be missed by much of the general populace.

Skua,

It's from World War I and meant for trench fighting, so I suppose I could see having your hand armoured as being a very helpful defensive tool when your opponent is also wielding a knife and neither of you are wearing any other armour besides a helmet.

Skua,

You say this like a) Russia isn't burning through colossal Soviet stockpiles and b) NATO countries are throwing their full military force behind Ukraine. I wish we would, but we aren't. Currently the country sending the most to Ukraine as a percentage of GDP is Lithuania, but even Lithuania has sent less than 6 months worth of its military budget throughout the two years of the invasion.

Skua,

In terms of Russia, the answer is yes.

If Russia's manufacturing base could keep up with the Russian army's consumption of equipment, we would not be seeing North Korean shells at the front and the significant reduction in artillery fire compared to last year. Russia's manufacturing capacity for artillery is very large, but its army has been consuming the shells at an absurd rate that Russia's industry cannot come close to matching.

While the West has gutted their manufacturing bases over the past 40 to 50 years and moved it all to Asia.

Six of the world's top ten arms exporters are in NATO, and two more of the top ten are close non-NATO allies. The numbers do not agree with you.

Ukraine's military uses different equipment and strategies to NATO; it is a post-Soviet military, after all. NATO generally uses air power to fill the role that Ukraine and Russia use artillery for, and NATO has production that aligns with that. That combined with a lack of political will are the constraining factors on western supply to Ukraine. Giving Ukraine F-16s is a way to address that.

Skua,

Given that Iran paid for them years ago and is now in a bit more of a tense situation than usual, I have a feeling Iran is saying to Russia that they'd better deliver or they'll stop selling stuff to Russia. Iran will be fine if Russia loses to Ukraine, so they can afford to make that threat

Skua,

It's not one or the other. You can do both. The French do. Vote for whatever the least bad realistic option is at the election, and then you have years of time to do the other stuff

Skua,

Georgia and Moldova seem like viable targets for a victorious Russia. Russia borders a lot of countries and plenty of them are neither in NATO nor particularly powerful military forces. Russia also has a track record of fucking with those two specifically. So yes.

Skua,

Original photo. Or this one is actually an edit to make them smaller, an American psyop to cover up North Korea's clear strategic hat advantage

Skua,

How'd you end up putting 18 hours in in the first place without being interested?

Skua,

I'm not sure it even is a devotion to cheap. I think a lot of major media projects now play everything so safe specifically because they're so expensive and therefore cannot afford to fail

Skua,

Artist Prof. Sam Van Aken took this to the logical extreme with the Trees of 40 Fruit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_40_Fruit

Skua,

The EU has cut its imports of Russian gas down from nearly half of the total supply to about 15% since the war started, so that's not nearly the threat it once was

Skua,

Scaphism, although the historicity of it is questionable

Skua,

Samurai also had straight up guns. For centuries. They bought them off of Portuguese traders and developed a local industry
