Bernie Sanders: It’s time for a 4-day work week | CNN Opinion (www.cnn.com)

The wealthiest people in this country have never had it so good. While income and wealth inequality in the United States is soaring, more than 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, we have one of the highest rates of childhood poverty among major countries on Earth, and more than 650,000 people are homeless....

acastcandream,

My company does half day on Fridays and that alone has been such a morale boost. We’ve had it for almost 3 years, everyone still really appreciates and utilizes it.

Tampa police chief Lee Bercaw would ‘retire’ — and still earn a $241,000 salary as chief (www.tampabay.com)

The city has drafted an agreement that would allow Lee Bercaw, a 28-year veteran with the force, to[retire and then] immediately be hired back by the city as a contractor to continue serving as chief after he retires in September....

  • FoD,

I actually do not remember where I heard this, but I was unhappy at one of my past workplaces, and I felt like nothing made sense anymore. The purpose of my job, the product, the people… I would ask why or seek deeper understanding and received nothing back.

The advice was “when no one has your back, it’s time to move your back”.

It stuck with me because it applies to friends, family, work, and life in general. If you do not feel supported and able to give support back mutually then it’s time to place yourself in a situation more beneficial for you and those around you.

It doesn’t place blame, it’s simply a validation statement - you feel x, so do y.

Yep. I didn’t feel this way for a long time, then realised it was because I was married to the wrong woman. She was heavily influencing the sort of man I was outwardly portraying, and it always felt like I was wearing a badly-made suit.

After the end of that marriage, I met my soul mate, and now have two wonderful stepkids and an incredible daughter. We’ve now been together for a little over 11 years, and I’m still amazed at how lucky I am. My family gives me purpose and meaning, every day.

    After that, nothing else matters.

    conditional_soup,

Here’s the thing. We could have that right now, today, we’re there, they’re right. Computers and just useful software (fuck AI) alone have increased productivity so much that one guy with fancy Excel can do the work of what used to take 98 people (7 banks x 14 person abacus teams). And that’s just one regional bank. Before email, corporations had internal mailing departments, now there’s dirt cheap and super convenient email. There are untold numbers of shell scripts out there quietly replacing whole ass departments of people. Soft automation alone, no robots needed, has increased human productivity to an absolutely bonkers degree since these statements were written. Thanks to the Friedman doctrine and Reagan and Thatcher and their ilk, all the benefits of that productivity got turned into a benefits for the asset holding class, while the middle and lower classes got lectures on the morality of hard work.

    givesomefucks,

    Bernie is pushing for 32/week.

If he was president we might have gotten it, but Biden sure as shit isn’t even going to mention it.

American workers are more productive than at any point in history, it’s just all the wealth goes into a very small number of pockets, and instead of having to pay taxes, they pay a small percent to politicians in both parties to ensure workers don’t get any

    notfromhere,

Is the takeaway from that site unpegging the USD from gold caused the current wage crisis?

    Gestrid,

Sorry for the long comment incoming . I went into detail with a lot of things.

The one I use costs a little bit of money and may be a little time-consuming to setup depending on the device, but it costs less than most streaming services these days, and you only need to pay for one of it (versus multiple streaming services).

It’s called Kodi. The program itself is free, and it technically doesn’t support piracy or torrents, but it does support 3rd party add-ons and 3rd-party repositories.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. Install Kodi on your platform of choice. It supports Windows, Android (including phones, Fire TV, and Android TV), iOS, and Mac. The steps should be about the same regardless of the platform.
    2. Sign up for a “debrid” service and subscribe. This will affect what torrents will be available for a show or movie, so choose wisely. (I personally use Real-Debrid..)
    3. Sign up for a VPN* and subscribe. (I use ProtonVPN.) Depending on where you live, some Internet Service Providers (the company you pay for Internet service) may not like you using a debrid site since it allows for very high-speed downloads, and it’s generally a good idea to use a VPN anyway. Install the VPN onto the same device you installed Kodi on.
    4. Use Google to find an add-on you want to install. Many add-ons cater to different wants. For example, some cater sports, others to anime, and some to live action shows. This site has a good list of available add-ons.
    5. Start Kodi. Use this guide to install the add-on of your choice.
    6. Once the add-on is installed, start it and go to its settings. Most of them should have a section called “Accounts” or “Your Accounts” somewhere in there. In there, you should find the option to add or authorize the debrid service you subscribed to. (If it’s not there, it’s not supported. This is another reason to choose a good one and another reason I recommend Real-Debrid.) Follow the onscreen instructions to connect the add-on to your debrid account.
    7. Turn on your VPN. Find a show you want to watch, pick a cached torrent when/ if it asks, and enjoy. You may need to adjust your audio language and subtitle settings. If you want to choose a specific torrent, you can do so by right-clicking (on PC) or holding down the OK button (on TV) and selecting the option. It might say something about “rescraping providers”.

*Many debrid providers automotive or manually whitelist certain VPNs. Whatever VPN you sign up for should be compatible with the debrid service you chose. Some sites (like Real-Debrid), will list the VPNs they’re compatible with, while others (like AllDebrid, another debrid service) will simply have you submit your VPN’s IP address for manual approval.

I realize this might seem complicated, but I think the payoff is worth it. I pay under $15 (less than $5 for Real-Debrid and $9.99 for ProtonVPN per month) for access to a TON of TV shows and movies, including shows on several different streaming services. And it costs less than most streaming services do these days.

Some add-ons also support Real-Debrid’s cloud functionality. Basically, Real-Debrid has the ability to download torrents on its own, and it stores them so you can download them to a storage device later if you want to. For example, you can use this if you have a long car or train ride ahead, and you need to bring some entertainment. Some Kodi add-ons can take advantage of this. They’ll send the magnet link (torrent) to your Real-Debrid account, and it’ll be available for you to download later. If it’s a cached torrent, it’ll be available immediately. If it’s uncached, Real-Debrid will begin working on downloading it. I’d recommend using a VPN whenever downloading directly from a debrid service so your ISP doesn’t complain to you. Anyway, I’ve put that to pretty good use myself. I watched an episode of the new Percy Jackson TV show recently on a train ride by downloading it beforehand via Kodi and Real-Debrid. I also got most of the episodes of an old anime I used to watch that way, too.

You should be able to ask "I want a CIS mate" in a dating app without being shamed.

There’s this rising narrative going around that if you ask specifically for a CIS partner, you’re a transphobe. That could be true for some people but it’s not fundamentally related to bigotry. Moreover, this narrative, the “if you only want a CIS mate then that is prejudice” is trampling on one of the most important...

    GardenVarietyAnxiety,

I’m a transwoman and I agree with you on this. When I was dating, I was upfront and when a guy said it was a deal breaker, it saved both of us a lot of time.

Most guys I talked to said it was a dealbreaker, and yeah it sucks. It makes you feel “othered.” But I can’t expect anyone to go outside their sexual comfort zone for a rando on Tinder.

Most of the guys were very polite about it all, too. And that’s all you should need to do.

If someone’s shaming you about it, that’s a good sign they have something going on in their own life. Essentially it’s their problem, not yours.

    Hope this helps~

    HowManyNimons,

It’s a specific word for a specific situation. If you’re seeing it too often for your liking, I suggest the problem is that there’s too much enshitification.

    EmergMemeHologram,

    I agree with you.

But we had a situation where consumers were happy and were paying for content, piracy dropped off, and it was insanely profitable for Netflix.

Then everyone got greedy and stuck their dicks in the pie and ruined it, and this is the backlash.

If you buy content digitally, it gets pulled from your library without your consent or recourse. If you steam you’re paying more and more for less.

What we had was good, now none of my friends talk about TV shows because it starts with “hey, did you watch X, it’s on paramount?” “No”, “oh, nevermind”.

Can someone list those piracy subscription services so we can avoid them as responsible citizens?

    blindsight, (edited )

The problem isn’t the number of providers, the problem is exclusive licensing deals.

If it was like music, then (theoretically), more choice is better. AFAIK all the platforms have pretty much all the music, so there is some choice available.

With TV and film, it’s so fractured that it’s literally easier to just pirate things, even for shows I (potentially) have ad-free paid access to already. With Stremio + Torrentio + a Debrid service, I just launch one app and everything’s available in seconds. With paid services, I need to search Netflix, then Prime, then CBC Gem, by which point I’d already be watching.

Plus, torrentio lets me pick the video quality I want, so I can force 4K H265 on my big screen for films or just pop on a 720p H264 on my small underpowered laptop (that can’t decode H265 fast enough for smooth playback).

It’s not even about price, it’s just a better experience to pirate. And that’s a Big Problem for the industry.
