/kbin server update - or how the server didn't blow up

Currently, on the main instance, people have created 40191 accounts (+214 marked as deleted). I don't know how many are active because I don't monitor it, but once again, I greet all of you here :) In recent days, the traffic on the website has been overwhelming. It's definitely too much for the basic docker-compose setup,...

I'm so confused. We only have 3500 accounts on Kbin? So we are miles and miles less than Lemmy?

Thanks for that, it's true, I need to remember especially about that last point. Later, I will write a few words about what was happening behind the scenes during these days. I wasn't there alone. Not anymore ;)

kbin is much older; it was a side project. Recently, I took it more seriously :)

Sheeeep,

It's just in the bottom right corner with the little three arched logo, next to the "Powered by kbin", depending on where you are the page changes between https://kbin.social/rss and specific magazines like https://kbin.social/rss?magazine=kbinMeta

Very true, around where I live the council had to set up warm spaces over winter which is just awful (great we had them, but awful that we had to have them).

It does seem that even though the cost of living crisis is publicised in a lot of places, not much is actually been done to try and ease the situation for everyday normal people.

Horrendous, sometimes local council members can be a good contact in situations like those. Depends on whether you have good representatives of course!

You are correct in how it works. It's incredibly frustrating. On Reddit I was +80k, and I don't care about the actual number, I care that it showed I contributed to conversations to the best of my ability. I should be at plus several hundred right now but I'm in the negative. It's not a huge deal but I'd prefer not to be mistaken for a troll.

Yes, it definitely needs to be changed. After the boost <-> fav switch, this indicator doesn't make sense anymore.

It's an absolute travesty the state of protest in this country

Its very much one rule for me another for thee. I can't get over how brazen and obviously unapologetic they all are (even if they say the words)

The idea that daddy longlegs are highly venomous and just unable to pierce human skin is an urban myth and has no basis in reality. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/daddy-longlegs/

An Anti-Porn App Put Him in Jail and His Family Under Surveillance (www.wired.com)

On a Wednesday morning in May, Hannah got a call from her lawyer—there was a warrant out for her husband’s arrest. Her thoughts went straight to her kids. They were going to come home from school and their father would be gone. “It burned me,” Hannah says, her voice breaking. “He hasn’t done anything to get his bond...

The coolest thing I saw today was that some Star Trek subreddits just spun up their own instance at https://startrek.website/ and then I was like "Wait, can I subscribe to that on Kbin?" and yeah, I can... right here! https://kbin.social/m/startrek@startrek.website

Holy Shit. The Fediverse fucking rules, y'all.

Morbidchromium,

@rasterweb totally fitting for a Star Trek community to be on a FEDERATED system.

If it helps, I have a negative reputation at the moment as well and couldn't figure out why. My understanding is:

  • "downvotes", which are called "reduces" on kbin, contribute negatively to your reputation score.
  • "upvotes", which called "favorites", do not contribute to your reputation score in either direction.
  • "boosts", which are similar to Twitter's retweet feature, are what contribute positively to your reputation score. When your comment/post/thread is "boosted" by another user, it shows up in the microblog/mastodon feeds of people following that user.

Maybe someone else more familiar with kbin and the fediverse can correct anything I have wrong.
