Guys, even if Facebook wants to mine data from the Fediverse, there is no value in doing so. They cannot serve ads to federated users, so why would they even attempt to create a taste profile of any Fediverse users? The only thing they could do with your posts is AI training. And that they can do with all public information either way.
What we have here is a private multi billion dollar company who is interested in implementing an open web standard for interoperability. It's what we wanted, right? Let's be welcoming, yet cautious. Never forget XMPP.
This, in essence, is the question the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) had to answer in Case C-634/21. And the Court’s answer is yes, following in the footsteps of the Advocate General’s opinion on the case. Rendered on 7 December, this ruling was eagerly awaited as it was the first time the Court had the...

Signal is just another walled garden silo with no real value over WhatsApp just owned by a different organization. I won't use anything which is not XMPP compatible.
#threads is only federating and integrating ActivityPub so it can 1) dominate code contributions and steer the protocol in a corporate-friendly direction, and then 2) eventually discard it in favor of a closed protocol, using some excuse of “increased security” or “innovative new technology”. No more, and no less. Apple and Google did the exact same thing to #XMPP.
We should treat them like any other instance. If they are a good citizen of the Fediverse they stay, otherwise they will be blocked and nothing has changed.
When the big corporations leave people just need to reist the "oh the user numbers are so small now, the Fediverse must be outdated" fallacy. Just like XMPP. Still works great, we just need people to use it instead of the silos which are popular now.
I agree. Everyone should be able to decide for themselves. My only concern is that Fediverse servers will suddenly become expensive to host because of the Threads traffic. But this would also happen with many users on many smaller instances and is not specific to Threads.
@mousey@J12t XMPP works fine for me and my friends. Maybe the clients would be better if corporations with a lot of money made them, but they have all you really need without all the bloat.
