I wrote about how Patreon needs to join the #Fediverse:
"Why would a creator send their audience to a third-party platform when Instagram and Threads can be a one-stop-shop with their existing followers while having access to new paid subscribers across the social web?
Patreon can no longer just be the place where creators are paid, it needs to be a place where creators can be discovered. And it cannot do that as a social silo."
We have a small maintenance release for the #emojiwall
If you're a smol.stream user and notice something's up in your OBS overlay, just "Refresh cache of current page" in your source and you should be good to go!
If you're not a smol.stream user, well, you should!
Some of the areas where I am most critical of #ActivityPub are areas where it is clear that the design is focused around how to represent the world rather than how a healthy system behaves.
Basically the focus is almost entirely on "how do I describe what humans are doing?" Sometimes in great detail, but very little emphasis is on "what is required for a set of health distributed nodes to talk to one another successfully."
It's like if I were to develop a programming language that gave you infinite expressibility (within English, separate problem) about objects, but didn't give you any tools to manipulate those objects.
So you can say "Carl Tells Jane that Alice Wrote a Note to Bob" but you can't write a basic server because you can't confirm in a consistent way that it was ever actually sent to Jane, let alone that Jane received it.
right now I love #ActivityPub. but something like a Personal Data Server that I can keep at home or pay somebody to manage, move whenever I want and connect to any new service that somebody develops, seems like the inevitable way forward. a blob with all my stuff as safe as I am willing pay for, where these companies are competing to be the most trustworthy and reliable. instead of having it spread out everywhere or with Google or Apple. and them pushing me to use their services. #SocialWeb
I'm going to try to expand the list of #peertube instances I follow from my server. I've noticed the servers I'm currently federating with tend to lean towards being highly technical. It's not that this is a bad thing since that also reflects my personal interests, but a little variety doesn't hurt.
@zalasur
Yee, the costs of hosting are likely taxing their admin base in many ways, iirc they archive 15tb of backblaze data last I checked. I know the average joe signs up for 6 bucks a TB per month.
It's more reason we need to diversify the fedi by finding niche hosts and curating networks otherwise admins become Atlas. but we're not, and at some point the heavens get too heavy if not enough aid is given, financially, or technical supports like mods and sub admins
@DavBot That was one of the factors behind my decision to self-host. Yes, it costs me a bit every month to keep my videos online but I'm not dumping a bunch of my content on someone else. I'm in control, and it's worth every penny.
Last chance. If you want to have your signature on the real life letter that goes to Canada's House of Commons Speaker and others, you must tell me before 9AM PDT (about 40 minutes).
You do not have to be Canadian to sign.
Signatures received after 9AM will be on the web version.
I've made some updates to the letter including more supporting links and sources.
"Cara" removes the AI content, and applies "Glaze" to our jobs. It does not contain advertising or paid profiles. Besides that, it is a place designed for artists.
It would be great if they also joined the #Fediverse ✨✨✨
